Came to Laka for dinner and while it seems like they've done a 180 pivot from their original fare, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they offer breakfast all day. Words to my heart, you know. Despite being sold out on some of the items we wanted to try, we still really enjoyed what we did order. Portions were generous and not too pricy. Also, despite being late, their Chinese deli was still pretty fresh. The order of roast pork we had was well seasoned and featured that airy crispy skin to be completely envious of. That alone is a huge plus because we don't have a lot of places in the peninsula to pick up these items, especially compared to the city. The fish porridge was complete comfort. Texture was good and there was plenty of fish to go around. The pork noodles were deeply savory but the pops of pickled vegetables against the silky rice noodles also really hit the spot. The only dish that was a bit meh to me were the potstickers. The filling was a bit mushy and I'm not the biggest fan if the deep fried style. Pan fried is the king for me. Definitely keeping Laka as an option whenever I really need that comfort Chinese food fix. read more

I have been there for Asian breakfast where there are a few inexpensive at menus. I now go there for the BBQ and roasted items that you can get to go. Got the roast port today. Don't expect it to be hot as it is sitting and hanging in the take out area up front where they have roast duck, hainan chicken and BBQ pork and ribs. All are solid items. Today I craved roast pork which I got to go. Skin was crispy when I got home and nicely roasted. Wish they gave me a dipping sauce to go with it. Will definitely ask for it next time. Come here when I'm craving chinese food for lunch! I normally get their hainan chicken rice plate with a side of iced tea, their fan tuan, and their 3 item rice plate. Their dishes are pretty tasty and they have a lot of options for their meat selections. That is to say, their hainan chicken and meat quality is pretty good and rich in flavor! I also love getting their fan tuan. One order comes with 2 pieces. The rice consistency and filling inside the fan tuan is super good. It's one of my favorite items to get here since not a lot of restaurants have it. Their service is fast/good, but it could get busy during lunchtime so it could get a little slow. Their prices are super affordable. And the 3 item rice plate is worth it! They have their own meat deli section in the front area of the restaurant that sells and cuts different types of meat. Although this is not one of those restaurants that has been in Millbrae since the beginning of times but it's been here for awhile. Originally it's the same owner as Porridge and Things but not sure whether this is still true. Anyways this has evolved into a restaurant that pretty much everything including Chinese rice burritos, Chinese deli (chicken and duck) and random other HK cafe style rice plates. I do want to remind people that HK style hainan chicken is not very tender (so I tend to prefer Malaysian/Singaporean style Hainan chicken instead). The food is alright especially if you want a rice plate for lunch. Nothing stands out enough for me to give it 5 stars but not bad enough for 1-2 stars. First time here. Hidden gem. Place looks very busy, but it's really the lines at the takeout counter and BBQ meats window area. I picked the hot cup soybean milk for my meal. Organic and nutritious! Meal F was the chicken and rice wrapped in leaf. The egg yolk and sausage inside it was a bonus/so good. This was nearby and the photos look appetizing so I gave it a shot. I ordered the 3 meat choice with rice and holy moly, the food was bomb.com lol . I got the roast pork, roast duck and char siu and everything was delicious. Roast pork skin was crunchy, roast duck was fatty and juicy and the char siu was sweet but savory. Add the duck sauce and the chili oil and def a home run. I came back a total of 3x while I was in Millbrae for work and if I do come again, I'll def revisit the place. Just fyi, they close at 8pm. Reliable Cantonese roasted meats option here. We stayed in Millbrae for a few weeks and explored all the Chinese joints. Laka was one we returned to multiple times because their cha siu was delicious -- juicy and with just the right amount of fat. The chicken with ginger onion sauce (bak cheet gai) and roast duck (foh ngaap) also were pretty good. Decently priced, too. The inside is modern and clean. Take out is quick and hassle free. I also came back for the Hong Kong breakfasts and, while I was grateful they offered this, I wasn't impressed. The congee was watery and without "liu" (Cantonese for ingredients). For HK style congee, it should be a little thicker, richer, with bits of meat, egg, seafood based on the order. Would I return to Laka for the Cantonese roast meats? Probably. Congee was soft and smooth enough to be on par, although the "boat congee" still doesn't have the right ingredients as in Canton. Tucked away on a busy Broadway street, this place is our new go-to spot for roasted/bbq meats. It used to be the OG Cheung Hing but I think this place takes the crown. What we got: - 3-meat bbq plate: I believe the meats are preset. Cha Shu (bbq pork) came out fresh, moist, and had a great fat to meat ratio. Chicken was nice and juicy and not a single piece we had was dry (ginger/scallion sauce a bit on the salty side). Roast duck was also not overly greasy and full of flavor - Tofu Skin salad/Cucumber salad: Great palate cleansers. Good texture, good flavor - Rice rolls: The you tiao (chinese donut) wasn't crispy but the overall flavor was decent. All the food we received was fresh and delicious. I especially liked both of the soups - the noodles were soft, soaking up the flavors from the savory broth. There was a relatively good ratio of meat to starch. The signature beef rib soup comes spicy, but not overly so. I love how they also serve breakfast, lunch, and also dinner, and provided different varieties of food. I think they are fairly clean, not too dirty.
