Our evening had a disappointing start at D'Mystic, a popular spot packed with a mixed crowd and staffed with indifferent bartenders. This lapse was remedied when we left and walked over to what we read was a festive lounge. During the day, it's apparently a low-key brunch cafe, and in fact, they were still serving sandwiches and desserts on the main floor. However, up on the second floor is a stylish bar lounge with energetic dance music and a decidedly tropical decor. We weren't quite ready to cut a rug because we aren't extroverts.By the time we sat down at our table, the bar was just starting to attract looser limbed customers. Besides, the tiki cocktail menu beckoned us. Jamie went for the 10€ Coco Loco which had equal parts tequila blanco, vodka, and rum, while I ordered their signature 12€ Pina Colada with rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream (Photo 10). They hit our respective spots and finally gave us the classic Chueca vibe. OK, we were finally ready to dance like Elaine on "Seinfeld". Give us room, will ya? A few minutes later, the man at the reception entered the bar shouting loudly: "Who were the guys who left the umbrellas at the entrance?" The way this was handled was disrespectful, aggressive, and completely inappropriate. The music and the party practically stopped because of the scene, and we were publicly exposed in a deeply embarrassing and humiliating way. There was no attempt at dialogue whatsoever -- only shouting, intimidation, and public shaming, reflecting ignorance and a total lack of professionalism. The attitude was violent and incompatible with a venue that presents itself as a space for the gay community, where one would expect at least respect, care, and a welcoming environment. We do not recommend this place. There is a clear lack of education, empathy, and basic respect for customers. After all, when it comes to liveliness, there are few places that can compare with a good friendly bar loaded with a mix of gays and straights as well as those of undetermined orientation. It has a young following and though I exceeded the average age of the other patrons by a mere half century, had a good time drinking and chatting with everyone.
