Henry Lewis (1860-1940) arrived to the area in 1883 and from 1890 to 1891 he served as town alderman. He was a successful cattleman and in later years he also farmed citrus. He also held interests in several Polk County banks and helped to organize and served as president of the First State Bank of Fort Meade The Queen Anne style of the home was developed by English architect Richard Norman Shaw for English manor houses and the style was popular in the 1860's. The style is characterized by a large house with steeply pitched roofs and gables. After Mr. Lewis's death, the was purchased by his daughter Virginia and her husband Carlton Marsh. Virginia lived here until her death in 1998. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 19, 2012. The house is a private residence so you can only view it from the outside.

The house was built in 1895 and was designed by architect E.R. Wharton. The two and a half story house is in the frame vernacular style with shingle elements and it is considered one of the best examples of a shingle style home in Florida. There is a one story wraparound screen entrance porch. Benjamin Franklin Holland was known in Bartow as a pioneer and a public servant. He was born in Carroll County, Ga., in 1846. When he was 17 he was a Confederate soldier in a battle at Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia that saw half of his company killed. During the battle he was wounded and by the time he recovered the Civil War was over. To heal from a shattered hand and tuberculosis he moved to Polk county where he married and had three children. He founded Polk's first abstract business and served in three county offices: school board member, county commissioner and county treasurer. One of his children became Florida governor Spessard Holland who grew up in the home. The house was listed on the US Register of Historic Places in 1975. It is a private residence so you can only view it from the street but it is a beautiful home and worth a drive by if you are in the area.

I was in Frostproof for the 30 Mile Scenic Highway Yard Sale, In search of a boost of caffeine I…read morestumbled on Mister Chris' Coffee Gallery which is located in the historic Atlantic Coast Line Train Depot in downtown Frostproof. The railroad came to town in 1911 and the station was built in 1912. The railroad helped to transport citrus from farmers all across the Lake Wales Ridge. To care for this restored landmark Mister Chris roasts coffee from around the world and ships it across the Continental United States. Today the depot is in the two acre Freedom Station Park. The park is a venue that can be rented and it also stages events such as Wall Street Market in Freedom Station Park and the "Mister Chris' Community Campfire series. This unique coffee shop combines history, music, art, and coffee, all the things I love. As you sip your coffee there are six rooms to explore: Hall of History, the Brew Ha Ha, the Study, the Paris Cafe, the Music Room and the Workshop which is the brew bar, gift shop and entertainment area. The workshop is located in what was once the depot cargo area. Chris has a collection of teapots, Beatles memorabilia, train stuff related to the depot, antique furniture, albums, collectibles, art, and on and on. I put my coffee down in a table and was startled to see a fish swimming under it. I didn't realize it was a fish tank table. There are surprises around every corner. Mr. Chris is a trusting soul. Coming from South Florida I couldn't believe he leaves all of his things out for people to look through and enjoy. This is such a wonderful business. I would come here every day if I could.

The Hurricane of 1928 is the name of a 7.5 foot tall statue that is outside of the former library…read morein Belle Glade. It was created by renowned Hungarian sculptor Ferenc Varga as a memorial to the victims of the Hurricane of 1928. The art piece depicts a family trying to flee the hurricane. The father is holding on to his son while the mother clutches a baby to her chest. The base of the sculpture shows the flood waters washing away people and buildings. The 17,000 pound sculpture was commissioned by the Belle Glade Bicentennial Committee and dedicated on May 31, 1976. On Sunday Sept. 16, 1928, a category 5 hurricane came ashore near the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and swept across Palm Beach County, traveling west to Lake Okeechobee. If you visit the Jupiter Lighthouse you can still see the crack in the lens caused by the hurricane. The storm destroyed hundreds of buildings and caused millions of dollars in property damage. 2,500 to 3,000 people lost their lives, many of whom were black migrant farm workers and Belle Glades residents. It is the second deadliest hurricane in U.S. History after the 1900 Galveston Hurricane. The hurricane caused the Lake Okeechobee dike to collapse causing flooding at the south end of the lake. People clung to trees as they watched their homes wash away. Uprooted homes traveled through the flood waters for miles while some areas remained underwater for days. As bodies began to decompose it became necessary to bury them quickly and unidentified. 1,600 Glades residents were buried in a mass grave in the Port Mayaca cemetery in Martin County. This is a very powerful piece of art. You can see the terror on the faces of the people as they attempt to flee the storm and you can't help but think of what is what like for them. The hurricane ended the Florida real estate boom of the 1920s. The state was sent into a depression for more than a year and thenin 1929 the stock market crashed thrust the nation into the Great Depression. You can see the legacy of the hurricane all over Broward and Palm Beach county. Even though the Hurricane of 1928 was Floridas deadliest hurricane few people know about it today. It is memorials like this that serve to remind of the lives lost and to stay ever vigilant during hurricane season.

Most of us are familiar with the term "Mall" associated with the modern shopping venues being indoors or outdoors "Arcades" are usually designed as covered passages in which the shops are located on both side and are usually multi-storied, most are from earlier periods and all that I've had the privilege of visiting are architecturally amazing and so nostalgic. I was taken back after discovering this treasure in Lake Wales since most I've experienced are located in larger cities - downtown Cleveland, Ohio comes to mind. The Rhodesbilt Arcade is a beautiful example of the period architect and well worth a walk through, the breeze-way transcends time, if you have a few minutes to spare take a stroll through history and take a seat and daydream about what it must of been like when it first opened. For a town of less than five thousand souls when this magnificent structure was erected it must have been quite the sight and people probably traveled from miles around to see it. Renovations have preserved it so generations to come can enjoy it, just as generations from the past have...

The Rhodesbilt Arcade is a historic building in the commercial historic district of Lake Wales…read more This area of Lake Wales was built during Florida's land boom years in the 1920's. The arcade was erected between 1924 and 1926 and it stretches between Park Avenue and Stuart Avenue. The Rhodesbilt Arcade was built by Jesse T. Rhodes who was nicknamed Good for his craftsmanship and quality of work. In addition to this arcade he built many of the first homes in Lake Wales. Rhodes was born in 1833 in Indiana. He arrived in Florida in 1913 at the age of 30 with his wife Alice in hopes that the warmer climate would help with his poor health. At the time he settled into a Lake Wales, the town was only two years old. He would go on to influence much of the early architecture of the town. This building is designed in a Mediterranean style with a curved parapet, ceramic tile, and arched doorways. The arcade also has hardwood floors, antique tile, and stained glass windows. The two story building is equivalent to today's shopping malls. The interior of the building held store fronts and offices lit by high skylights. Arcades were the most popular type of commercial building in the 1920's. This one still has business and offices operating out of it today. In later years Mr. Rhodes entered the real estate business and subdivided land into commercial and residential tracts. His wife Alice was the first insurance agent in Lake Wales. Mr. Rhodes passed away in 1932 at the age of 48 but his greatest achievement The Rhodesbilt Arcade still stands in downtown Lake Wales. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

This is a seven acre historic district in central Bartow, Florida that dates to 1885. The historic…read morecommercial district is bounded by Davidson and Summerlin Streets and Broadway and Florida Avenues. In the middle of the district is the historic Classical Revival Polk County Courthouse that has been turned into the Polk County Historical Museum. There are twenty-one historic buildings in this district and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Today the historic Classical Revival, Vernacular, and Masonry buildings along Main Street are occupied by shops and restaurants. There are quaint antique and vintage stores, a bakery, a Mexican restaurant, and a pizzeria. Parking is free along the street. During the first weekend in March the street is shut down for the Bartow Bloomin' Arts Festival. Bartow is so charming and fun to explore. This historic district was right up my alley.

This neighborhood was designed by Addison Mizner in a Mediterranean style that you can see…read morethroughout the city of Boca Raton. It is located off of Palmetto Rd behind the Boca Raton Art Museum art school. The houses were designed for the executives of Mizner's company and one was for his brother the Reverend Henry Mizner who retired to Boca Raton. The Robinson Company were contracted to construct 29 homes in the neighborhood but they went bankrupt before they could finish. Architect Herman Von Holst from Chicago who owned the land foreclosed and along with investors he finished designing the subdivision and named it Old Floreresta meaning "a delightful rural place" in Spanish. The houses have certain characteristics in common, barrel tile roofs, wrought iron balconies, and Spanish style architecture. The homes are on narrow tree lines streets. Some of the notable homes in the subdivision are 888 Oleander St owned by Henry Mizner who lived in Acacia, 875 Alamanda St. was the home of Herman Von Holst and he named his home Lavender House. He went on to serve on both the Boca Raton town council and planning boards. The house is now on the National Register of Historic Places as is 801 Hibiscus St, it was owned by film producer and mayor of Boca Raton Fred Aiken. Other well known residents of the neighborhood were Thomas Fleming who founded Florida Atlantic University, Don Estridge who worked on the IMB personal computer, and Nathaniel Weyl who authored the book "Red Star Over Cuba" In 1990 Boca Raton named Old Floresta it's first historic district. The homes in the neighborhood are privately owned so you are not able to tour them. You are free however to drive through the beautiful neighborhood or even better bike it if you are able to do so. Although the homes I mentioned are not for sale a lot of other ones are. I saw quite a few for sale signs in the neighborhood. I am sure they are way out of my price range but it's free to dream.

Imagine my surprise to find a listing for the Old Floresta Historic District in Yelp. Like wow,…read morewhoever wrote this did a great service for helpers who seek out historic areas in Palm Beach county, areas which may be close to where they live or work. And this is OUR neighborhood. It's where we drive into and out of daily. It's where we walk our sato Bori. And where we drive friends around to show them the authentic ORIGINAL Mizner designed homes, as well as those which mimic the Mizner look. The streets are narrow, some cannot accommodate two cars going in either direction without riding up into someone's lawn. The foliage is heavy, very heavy. People who visit us or do work for us always comment that it reminds them of Coral Gables. As a historic district the City monitors carefully all renovations which affect the exterior in any manner at all, as plans must be reviewed by Historic division as well as City Code Compliance. Things like roof materials and colors, driveway design and materials, alterations to windows and doors or subtle things like the removal of a tree and its replacement. And that's all good! I love Old Floresta. I don't love the drivers who try through our area on the way to Boca Regional Hospital or anywhere else and roll through stop signs. I hope they get tickets when police set up traps. Our neighborhood is quiet, well preserved and a place where families walk with their children and their dogs and just chill. While not a gated community it is tucked away off Palmetto Park Road, east of 95 and west of Dixie, on the north side of the street. If you find the old Art School on the north side of Palmetto, you access Old Floresta on either Paloma or Cardinal (NW9). Drive slow when in our community. Or better yet, walk around. Oh by the way, on Halloween the homeowners really go craycray decorating their homes and thousands go trick treating.

The Lake of the Hills Community Center is a historical landmark in Polk County on the northwestern…read morecorner of Lake Starr. A community social club formed in 1904. Early developer W. J. Howey created a land company that purchased several hundred acres around Starr Lake and in Lake Wales for home development. The railroad brought wealthy northerners to the winter community of Mountain Lake estates where the Bok Tower carillon was built. Howey believed they would also flock to his community and in anticipation of their arrival he set aside two acres for a recreational community site in 1914. In 1929 members of the local community built a one story stucco building. At first you had to be a Howey land owner to join the club but soon membership was open to anyone. On March 24, 2000, the stucco building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2014 over 100 people attended a 100th Centennial Celebration and the name was changed to Lake Of The Hills Community Center. Today the Community Center is a gathering place hosting several social events throughout the year, including ice cream socials, spaghetti and covered dish dinners, meetings, monthly programs, and it is a host site for the annual 39-Mile Scenic Highway Yard Sale which is how I arrived here. The building can be rented for private events. As a fan of historic architecture it was a treat to visit this gem and see the old photos and history on the wall. The view of Starr Lake from the clubhouse is gorgeous. I love the old fashioned feel of this sweet community center that has been a stalwart of Lake Wakes for over a century.
