Great place to find some local artwork inspired by the lakes and prairies of the region. They have a lot of water colors and oil pastels. I particularly liked the prairie themed ones. We ended up picking up a water color of Phelps Mill. The local landmark is a popular source of inspiration for local artists.

It's not the art that disappointed me but the lack of enthusiasm the staff had to visitors. I received a cold welcome, and when I approach this millennial that clearly thinks art is by design of his own hair, and attitude is when I finally realized that perhaps the Red Door is not on its way up in the regional art community but has given up . He is clearly not an art curator, but a curator of himself. The Red Door Art Gallery is a beautiful idea, but just doesn't have the substance to keep it afloat. Also, it must a misprint or joke that you call yourself a museum as well as visitor center. Oh my gosh what an identity crisis!!! You need some help!

We were particularly thrilled to see works by Bill Brien, Denise Lajimodiere, and Louise Erdrich. Also, it is the area's visitors' center and Allison made great suggestions for other scenic stops and eateries. Well worth the stop!

Rural Minnesota offers a lot of things: fishing, farming, sports, but most people don't think of…read moreculture. The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center has provided not just culture, but some entertainment as well. The Cultural Center acts as a gallery for artists (both local and from far away), a concert venue, and they host the yearly "Great American Think Off" which is not just a couple of days of philosophical debates, but there is also a parade and street dance that accompany the festivities. I was recently up there, and although I didn't get to check out the gallery, I was able to listen to the reggae band concert that they hosted. If you're in rural Minnesota, and are looking for something interesting to do-give the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center a try.

The Rourke is much like Doctor Who's TARDIS: It's bigger on the inside! This museum might look…read moresmall, but it is jam-packed with Art that challenges, that makes you ask questions, that inspires. Bonus: the price of admission is FREE so you can visit as often as you want. My favorite exhibit hosted by The Rourke in recent years was TransNodak, which was "a photo series about twelve local trans people living in/from North Dakota." The gallery talk with the artist was both moving and educational. My favorite piece from the permanent collection is a sculpture called "Cream Puff with Frogs." It is exactly what it sounds like, and I never pass by it without pausing to smile. Weather-permitting, don't miss the sculptures on the patio to the West and the pollinator gardens to the East! Across the street, between M&H and Ace Hardware, is a small area called the Sticks Garden, which features pillar sculptures by local artists as well as beautiful flowers in the summer.
