I am a working parent and I understand the hesitation for most, but what I gained from the coop makes the experience well worth it. What these yelp reviews don't tell you about the coop is that you become part of their community. As a relocated family, we made friends and a network of support by just being part of this program. The coop took care of the "friend making" process for both our kids AND for us parents. I also found myself surrounded by supportive moms and dads who care about my kids as much as I do. By working in the classroom you learn to love each of these kids as your own. The kids in turn are comfortable with all the parents. In the classroom, there is a teacher for your child AND a teacher for you. It is amazing how much you grow and learn as a mom/dad when you have someone you can talk to about your child. Also having the other parents with children of the same age that you can swap ideas and share heartaches with is helpful. I know people are turned off by the whole "all school job". I work too, I understand the effort it takes. What I didn't expect was the positive impact of the job on my children. We forget that our kids are aware of our behavior. My kids saw mom working for the school and helping to make it better and that actually made a difference for them. They see the importance of "building your community" and "everybody chipping in" and they learned that from the coop. Our previous childcare/preschool experience was the all day drop off scenario. So, I have experienced both options. The no work all day solution is great, but I wouldn't do it again. I feel that I am closer and more involved with my child from having to be at the school. For me, it is worth it! I went into this school thinking affordable and easy with a pesky job. Instead, what I have gained, and what my children have gained, is seriously priceless!

By…read morenature, a cooperative preschool is one where the parents/caregivers are involved by being in the classroom at times and holding a school "job". Your "job" can vary from small jobs to holding a "board position" like treasurer or secretary. I did the job of board childcare as mentioned by another reviewer for two years. It consisted of being in the classroom (with my child) one (at most) Friday a month for one hour and 45 minutes to help watch the kids of the board members while their parents had a meeting. If I had a conflict, I could send my babysitter (who I was already paying to watch my child) and they would basically have a play date with the other kids and parents. I've found it to be a pretty flexible, forgiving place where everyone chips in to make things run smoothly. I have always felt that the time I've invested in the co-op has been more than worth the benefits my children and I have received. Getting to know all of the parents through being together in the classroom has been invaluable. You almost immediately have a community of parents who know your child and who your child feels comfortable around. This is a group of people who help and support each other in and out of the classroom. In addition, the teachers are very experienced and the classroom is a large, bright space. Basically, I think it is an amazing place for a child to start their educational experience and for a family to be involved in a great community.

Well, my son didn't but they took such good care of him and made sure his transitions from class to lunch to extended care were as seamless as possible. There are precious few faith-based preschools available in our area that offer extended care by the hour with flexibility to pick up whenever I need to up until 5pm. It's a true God-send to have found Pilgrim and we will truly miss coming there after June camps.

Some of my favorite things about this preschool are the active, imaginative outdoor play space, the learning curriculums which include strategies for all learning styles and a hands-on science curriculum Mrs. Darragh designed herself. I also appreciate that healthy snack options like fruit are always offered, that there is an emphasis on helping children develop the social and emotional skills that will best serve them in kindergarten, and of course I love the care and attention paid to my student's individual needs. This preschool is run as a venture of Rose Hill Church so the cost is much lower than you find at for-profit preschools. And what a value you get! You learn and are able to carry that learning into the rest of your life and family. Everyone benefits. You are supported by a parent educator who is there to help with parenting trials (the non stop ever changing trials of parenting). The teachers are very seasoned and deeply knowledgeable and thoughtful about what and how they are teaching and why. A safe place for your child to learn how to handle big emotions. Lots of practice building social emotional skills. It is not drop off, but you aren't there every day. You get to be in the classroom 1 day a week and have a rotating on-call day a few times per year. What you get from being there is a bigger understanding of who your child is and how they learn. By working together with other parents, and sometimes relying on each for help, you build community (and friendships). It's fun and the benefits, short and long term, and immeasurable.

I was too young for kindergarten, but was ready for school so my parents enrolled me here. It is not a religious preschool, though it is located in the same building as the First Lutheran Church so in that sense it is a religious-affiliated school. It is the only religious-affiliated school I have attended from preschool thru graduate school, and the religious aspect in no way detracted from the learning experience. Most of my classmates continued on to the same elementary school after, which was nice for having consistency in classmates across grades and schools. The classes were fun and both my parents and I liked the teachers I had. Though I did get in trouble once for telling the teachers they were not the boss of me... We were allowed to dress up for Halloween in class and the best Halloween costumes I have had in life thus far were while I was going to school here. I left this school eager to learn more and looking forward to kindergarten, which is a testament to the quality of education First Lutheran Preschool provided me. To date, First Lutheran Preschool is the only school I attended out of the preschool, elementary, middle, and high schools I attended in which the buildings I went to class in are still standing. The buildings I took classes in at Sunset Elementary, Einstein Middle, and Shorewood High Schools have all been torn down in the past decade. So out of these four schools, First Lutheran Preschool has something that the other schools do not in terms of standing the test of time.

The second thing I adore about our class is the talent: our teacher, Monica, is actually an opera singer, and she brings her beautiful singing to every circle time. Anyone who's heard a group of parents droning along to a song knows what a blessing a gifted teacher can be. Monica also provides a very laid back, attachment friendly style. When my son was scared of one of the circle time routines, she altered the practice to help him adjust, and she came up with clever ideas to help ease him into the routines of preschool. We also have a gifted "parent educator" who doesn't cram education down our throats but offers ad hoc support, tips and understanding. Third pro is the mixed ages. Any kid 1 - 3 years old can enroll. The bigger kids learn sibling skills and get to show off for the littler ones, and the younger ones get to copy bigger kids. It's a fascinating process to observe how fast the little ones learn. Finally, I love that I feel comfortable and at home in our class. The class doesn't operate along gender lines, which makes it feel queer friendly. The other parents who attend with their kids are friendly and open. Our teacher has a lot to do with that atmosphere. Cons? As I see it, this preschool's only flaw is that the co-op is perhaps too laid-back about organizing, which means we hover on the brink of under-enrollment. In short, I couldn't recommend our Saturday preschool more. Even though my own son is close to aging out, I hope the class will continue for many more years because it is so wonderful.

The stars of the show are the wonderful teacher Monica and Parent Educator Glenn. They are immensely wise and talented and gifted teachers. Thanks to the wonderful Monica and Glenn we have beautiful animated singing during circle time, ukulele-playing and sign language instruction too! We look forward to Saturday mornings in preschool because of these great teachers and fun multilingual families. We'll be sad to age out (though it won't be for a while) . . . hopefully by then the age range will be expanded so our son can continue to have fun being part of this community.
