First time in KC and I was told I had to try Lamar's donuts! They were good, the location I went to had a big selection and was clean and neat with great service! I always start with a yeast raised glazed-- if you can't get the basics right, why order more? So it was light fluffy, fresh and delish. I also got a red velvet cake donut, they had a big variety of cake donuts if that is your jam. It was good, but yeast raised is just my personal preference. Stopped here one weekend for some morning donuts and was greeted with some of the worst service I've ever experienced. Seems to be worked by a bunch of young distracted people that only want to talk and be on their phones. After looking at the menu for five minutes I was finally barely greeted. Most of the donuts that I would've tried were not available so I had to settle for some others. One of the worst parts was the price. It's extremely overpriced for mediocre donuts. I was in Kansas City for a few days recently and I had Lamar's Donuts bookmarked as a place to try. I realized on my last day there that this place has weird hours and closes very early in the afternoon. So I rushed over after lunch. The place is located in a strip mall and there was no one there when I got there around 12:30ish on a weekday. Unfortunately, they had sold out of glazed donuts, so I asked for one chocolate frosted and one strawberry frosted. To my great surprise, the guy told me I could have them for free and also gave me a huge box of about 10 donuts or so to also take for free. I guess it was getting to be later in the afternoon and they were trying to get rid of them. But wow, free donuts is automatically 5 stars in my book. So I tried a few of them (couldn't eat the whole box so shared it with others) and I was pretty blown away. My favorite was the regular chocolate frosted yeast ring donut. It's like Dunkin Donuts but a whole lot fresher and tastier. I also had a strawberry frosted cake donut, which I didn't like as much, but was still very good. The glazed jelly donut was also pretty amazing and juicy. The donuts here are $2.20 each I believe, which seems pretty pricey, but from what I sampled, the quality is certainly there. The donuts are excellent, but they're a bit pricey. Regular dozen is around $20. A special dozen is around $40. I got a box of 9 donuts for $29. Five were regular, four were specialty. I'm not sure which was which. I had glazed, cinnamon twist, long John (filled and not filled), coconut cake and blueberry cake. I don't know if it's just me, but $30 seems high for 9 donuts. The donuts themselves are terrific. I love that the filled long John's are injected several times along the edge. This means you get filling in every bite, rather than having 2-3 bites with nothing. And, even though I griped about the price, they are big donuts. All of their yeast donuts were phenomenal. I found the cake to be hit or miss. Blueberry was great. Coconut topped was meh. First off, I truly appreciate the free donuts on national donut day, that was a win. I didn't, however appreciate the attack when I came back in with a second round of my children. Not only did the employees cease to recognize that my children were different both times I went in, taking advantage of the free donut per person who showed up. I visited KC recently and was nostalgic for a donut place that I remembered from when we lived there in the 1980's. I found the new location with the wonderful Google. The employee who helped me said the old location I remembered was TWO locations ago, lol. So, the donuts are still amazing!! Flaky and light when they're supposed to be. Back at the best donut shop in KC. I literally cannot stop eating these donuts. They are SO good. They have the beak flakey dough. When here, you don't need to get too fancy. You just need the glazed. I'd also HUGHLY recommend the twist and donut holes. Blueberry cake is another solid. These donuts were fresh and delicious. Surprised that there were so many options to choose from on a Sunday morning at 10am. I only tried a glazed and blueberry donut. I was surprised at the hefty weight and texture of the glazed donut. Definitely cannot eat more than one! I expected the blueberry glazed one to be heavy, but it was lighter than expected. Definitely a different making process than their competitors airy glazed variety. This breaks my heart. I lived in Kansas City for 42 years and enjoyed what I considered to be the best donuts on the planet for all of those years. I returned to KC for a short visit and made Lamar's one of my first stops. Paying $2.20 for a single glazed donut was the first insult, but upon arriving back at the hotel I found that the donuts were cold. I don't mean room temp; I mean refrigerated cold. I'm convinced these donuts were left over from yesterday. I can't imagine this was an isolated incident. In addition, I was one of only two people in the store at 9:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning. In years past, people would have been lined-up outside the door. It's an old saying that people vote with their feet, and this would be testimony to that! To give you an idea of my age category, my mother stopped buying donuts for the family on Sunday mornings when the price became more than $1.00 a dozen. My father tells me that when he was a young man, he could buy donuts hot out of the fryer for $0.25 a dozen. Apparently I'm a dinosaur to expect fresh donuts at a reasonable price. read more
