However, in middle school, homework load can get pretty large. My child typically stays up until 12am-2am just finishing up the homework. According to my kid, you can survive the school by finishing your work, to "stay in line", don't forget any of your materials, and essentially, maintain a grade of B or higher. Those who don't meet all of the criterion typically get yelled at constantly or called out. Be careful. (This is with an exception to the 7th ELA and 7th/8th science teacher, who thankfully yells at students who are seriously disrupting class or not doing their work). Also, keep in mind that there is currently no counselor or advisory classes. SEL classes are nonexistent. Yard is quite small in middle school. All 3 grades eat lunch there, have PE there, and sometimes have assemblies. 8th graders leave yard messy though, slightly disgusting even afterschool. Please appreciate the janitor! Absolutely no field trips in the middle school too, excluding the 8th grade CEP. Many students seem to be upset about that. Lockers are fairly small. Can't fit much. Teachers give students many heavy textbooks and workbooks, not even allowing locker usage in between classes unless ask teacher. Either you break your back, use the rusty lockers, or buy a rolling bag. Not to mention, my kid told me that a few other students there are quite rude, impulsive, and genuinely mean. Nothing is really done to stop them, even when they're told that they will be held back a grade, they just go move on and they don't get much penalty. Athletics are good, some assignments look very fun and colorful, most students are nice, events can be exciting, pretty decent school. Anyways, your choice whether you want to enroll in this school or not. Many reviews that were recently made are true though, so I would recommend reading them.

When my son was there, Principal Rosina Tong was very caring and knew all of the students in the specials needs classrooms. She was very active in all of the events, classes, IEP meetings etc. She really cares about the students and the school is so blessed to have her. I went to middle school right next door at Giannini and Sunset used to be John O'Connell when I was in school. They've since relocated somewhere else and I'm so glad that Sunset is now in it's place because it's such a great school. The school is small but it is a very special school. I was hoping my little girl would be able to attend this school but we moved up north during covid. We have returned back to the city and are now at a different elementary school with SFUSD due to the lottery. I'm hoping we can get in next school year. I definitely recommend this school. We loved our time there.

The faculty, PTA, and students all value and demonstrate high academic standards, emotional intelligence, and positive community building. Additionally, we have never had any issues with bullying or having our questions/concerns ignored. I still remember our principal, Dr. Diane Lau-Yee, emailing us personally on our inconsolable eldest daughter's first day of Transitional Kindergarten over three years ago, reassuring us that she was able to calm down and have fun the rest of the day. It showed us that leadership at RLS is truly invested in the students' wellbeing and growth. We are amazed at how Dr. Lau-Yee and the rest of the RLS staff can remember the names and personalities of all the many students in attendance. The affordable afterschool programs (KEEP, ExCEL) we have utilized at RLS allow for convenient flexibility for us as working parents. And the after school staff are equally attentive and kind with the students. Peace-of-mind knowing all three of our children are picked up from school healthy and happy is invaluable. RLS is falls into the Sunset District schools that start earlier, at 7:50AM, and dismisses earlier as well (in comparison to other schools in the neighborhood that start later in the morning at 9:30M). This works out well for our family and I'd imagine for other working parents with early morning meetings and onsite start times as students may be dropped off early, between 7:30-7:35AM, for breakfast. RLS is an exceptional school with respectful, genuinely caring, and positive staff, parents, and student body. Your child(ren) will be well cared for here.

I had heard plenty of concerns about the lottery system and staffing challenges within SFUSD, but this school is truly a gem. We feel incredibly lucky to be here. At the heart of RLS is our exceptional principal, who somehow remembers every student, parent, sibling, and even grandparent by name. She knows my second grader likes to sneak up and say "boo!" to people and that my fourth grader has invented her own bird language. She is fair, thoughtful, deeply knowledgeable, and an outstanding leader. She has also been a careful and transparent steward of the school's budget, ensuring resources are used thoughtfully to support students. Every teacher we've had has taken the time to truly know and understand my kids as individuals. I've been especially impressed with the emphasis on social-emotional learning and the way teachers create a safe, supportive classroom culture. From thoughtfully pairing my quieter child with potential playmates to proactively addressing bullying and conflict, the staff are helping us raise kind, resilient humans--not just strong students. My kids feel comfortable speaking up, asking questions, and being themselves. Academically, I've been equally impressed by how teachers meet students where they are and help them grow. One of my children is advanced in math and reading, yet she says she never feels bored. Her teachers consistently find ways to deepen and extend her learning while also fostering humility and collaboration. When my other child struggled with reading, her teacher went above and beyond--creating a short instructional video and practical tip sheets for parents on how to support active reading at home. It made me feel empowered and equipped to help. Parent-teacher conferences are always thoughtful, specific, and collaborative; we leave with clear goals and a shared plan. I also don't think people talk enough about how affordable and well-run the aftercare options are at RLS. The programs offer a variety of enriching activities while making a genuine effort to accommodate working families' schedules and needs. Beyond academics, we appreciate the community we're building. We've built meaningful friendships with families at classroom gatherings and school-wide events. My older child thinks the RLS robotics club is the most amazing activity ever--and it's run by dedicated parent and staff volunteers who give their time to create these opportunities. RLS has exceeded our expectations in every way. It's a place where students are known, challenged, supported, and celebrated. We are deeply grateful to be part of this community.

Thank you for teaching me to read and hold my pencil correctly (actually NO i still hold it wrong and I'd like to thank Ms. Sullivan for trying to scare me into doing it the right way. NO SUCH LUCK ha!) Thank you for giving me ice packs when I fell off the monkey bars.. band aids when i tripped on the gravel around that freaky power electric box in the corner of the yard, and for teaching me to count. Sadly, i still failed algebra for 2 year in middle school, all 4 years of high school, and 2 years in college. oops. Thanks to Mrs. Hom for teaching us all that origami. Mrs. Wong for having that bomb ass classroom with the treehouse thing inside. The tuition is comparatively attainable for an independent school with impressive academic outcomes (high school acceptances). The school has a strong athletic component with daily P.E. and students can participate in traditional school sports (cross country, volleyball, futsal, etc.) or after-school electives (theater, science club, fencing, etc.). A year ago, my child joined Kittredge in 6th grade from SFUSD. We were looking for an environment where students are interested in learning and support each other. Going in, my main concerns were how my kid would adjust to a much smaller school with rigorous academic expectations in math, science, and composition, and whether my child would fit in quickly with others who have been at Kittredge for years. It took my child about one quarter to adjust to the high academic standards, and the transition was a lot easier due to the nurturing environment. At the start of school, students were thoughtfully provided with calendar planners and shown how to schedule due dates. The students have group projects such as a bridge construction challenge and presentations as well as individual assignments like making an everyday invention and writing a history thesis. In 7th grade, students will be matched to multiple levels of math classes. My child made friends with classmates in the same year and across different grades. His cohort is an even mix of kids who joined from SFUSD and other private schools over the years or who attended the school since kinder. Kittridge is not only about academics. The school holds an annual talent show, school dance, and field day. The students attend field trips and hike to the beach and Land's End, and 7th/8th graders attend camp in Yosemite. The dedicated parent association also enlivens the environment with parties, picnics, lion dances, Diwali celebrations, etc.

When my child transferred to Kittredge, I was quite nervous for him in his new environment. On his first day of school, the principal arrived at school on a hectic morning and from a distance I saw that she made the effort to stop, and kneel down to his eye level to give him a warm welcome. These small gestures of kindness make a big impact. I appreciate that Kittredge focuses on the development of the whole person - academically, socially, and emotionally. Their curriculum includes teaching "Habits of Mind", cognitive skills which foster personal success. Every month, the theme is integrated through stories, discussions, and projects. I was filled with pride when my young son taught me "When you fail, you just try again". Once a child has a healthy mindset, and feels seen and heard, I believe he or she is set up for academic success. It is not a surprise that Kittredge graduates get accepted into San Francisco's top high schools. I met a lady who has worked in pediatrics in San Francisco for many years. When I mentioned that my son attends Kittredge, her eyes widened with excitement, "Ooooh that is a good school! All the kids I've met there are well rounded!" We feel extremely fortunate to have found a gem at Kittredge - a well balanced, warm and nurturing environment with solid academics.
