Each of the clubs has a membership drive early in the year and the association will try to get as many teams together for each club as possible, to ensure a robust season. Fees apply to join the association and a club but hopefully they aren't prohibitive for anyone who really wants to play. The older teams play in the evenings at different venues to get more competition. It's a good way for kids to have fun and get fit.

I…read morecould almost right a novel about the my experiences here but I thought I would write a little about my first impressions of the University and then give some tips and hints. Now the first time I walked around the St Lucia campus I was struck by the beauty of the sandstone buildings that create the Great Court area. This is what you see in all the pretty pictures of the university but it really is breathtaking in real life. The more you look the more detail you realise is in each individual carving in the buildings and the meanings they have for the faculties within them. The Great Court is what I always imagined a university would be like. I soon ventured into the classrooms inside. Being in the humanities, these classrooms were old and in desperate need of repair. There were broken tables, dodgy air conditioners, peeling paint but it all added to the idea of the struggling arts student. Having also had classes in engineering buildings I can say that some of the newer ones are pretty swish and clean and you are lucky if you are in there. The student union complex is a little bustling centre with shops, a salon, pharmacy, dentist, bakery, refectory, and much much more. I almost did not know what to do with all the choice in food. There are also Wednesday Markets held here offering everything from bargain books to sunglasses. There is plenty to do on campus that doesn't involve classes, like drinking a few jugs at the Red Room, going to the Schonell Cinemas, perusing the UQ Art Museum, or just chilling with friends over coffee. There are few libraries on campus as well and rooms full of computers for your use. The university really is like a mini world of its own, one I could easily live in. Now I could gush about this place that has been such a massive part of my life over the past 5 years but I will stop here and just give a few hints and tips. 1. The UQ Art Museum is free and the perfect quiet spot to escape the hustle and bustle of campus. 2. The Fryer Library has some great spots for postgraduate students to study with plenty of room on the desks to spread your books out. 3. The line for the computers in the SS&H Library goes quick about 10 mins before the hour as a good portion of the people will leave for their next class. 4. Subway is open late :-) 5. You can get jugs of beer at the Pizza Caffe and they have a student discount and often have other deals on that you get from their pizza box. I could give you a hundred and one other tips and hints but I think the best part is finding these things out for yourself...

Without knowing anything about other universities, all I can give is my personal experience, as a student who has completed her undergraduate in the Faculty of Arts and is going on to do honours. In terms of the quality of teachers and resources at UQ, I've had a pretty good experience. As a student of the Writing major, in the school of English, Media Studies and Art History (EMSAH), however, I would advise potential writing students to think twice before enrolling. It depends on what you're looking for, but QUT could probably offer a broader range of writing courses with more focus on the creative side of things. When I look back on all the courses I took at UQ, the ones I got the most out of where not the writing courses, but the English Literature and French courses. That may just be a personal thing, but I feel the quality of some of the writing courses wasn't up to UQ standard. Aside from the very specific example I have given regarding my experience at UQ, everything about life on the St Lucia campus is pretty great. Nestled in a bend of the Brisbane river, it's kind of secluded from the outside world. There's a healthy atmosphere with people jogging or cycling the UQ loop and sports happening on the numerous ovals and courts dotted around campus. There are cafes galore, places to eat, a cinema, an art gallery, a hair dresser, book stores...pretty much anything you could need. So, in terms of the overall university experience, UQ St Lucia makes for a pretty good package.

I have been to the Office Of Fair Trading Queensland to register a business name. As I have never…read moredone it before, I wasn't sure what to expect. Because it is government related, I assumed these things are lengthy and you'd be in the longest queue. I was organised upon getting there, with all my paper work filled out. I had my magazine, earphones and a book in preparation for the wait. When I got there, I was surprised how organised the place appeared. No huge queues full of people, just a handful sitting on the seats waiting for their number to be called. I didn't take long until my number was called. The person behind the desk, stamped and approved my proofs of identity and said, "thanks, we'll see you back in an hour and a half". Normally I'd be annoyed about the waiting. However, as it is conveniently located in the city, it was perfect timing to go for a quick shopping trip and grab some lunch. With no time wasted, I arrived back and my business name was approved! Yippy! Great customer service here, efficient and helpful staff.

Union College has to be the closest university housing to the University of Queensland St Lucia…read morecampus. It is also a fairly relaxed college, with less O-Week hazing and activities than some of the others around. Union is nice and close to classes, backing onto a sporting field (Wep Harris Oval) as well. It is leafy around but the buildings still have that grey student accommodation feeling to them. On the plus side, there is a pretty good gym and games room in the college. It is also co-education so boys and girls can play together. The rooms are pretty average in size, just fitting the single bed, small desk, chair, cupboard and drawers. Each room also has a fan and heater if I remember correctly. Union is great if you are looking for some pretty independent, convenient, no frills uni accommodation.

After a recent falling out with my local child care centre, I needed to find another centre - stat!…read more I needed a centre close to my home, but most importantly a centre that was professional and fun! All of the children here seem pretty happy, and the staff are extremely professional and very friendly. The centre is clean, air-conditioned and they have great facilities including an outdoor, undercover playground and a sandpit! My daughter who is 2 has been attending this centre now for four weeks (3 days a week) and I couldn't be happier. If you are looking for a great child care centre on the Northside make sure you drop into Goodstart Learning on the Boulevard.

A nice humble square of grass that bordered the mayhem of the Queen Street Mall. It was a lovely place to go to roll around in the grass, take a short time out, or to meet someone. I fondly remember a couple of protests I went to there as well. When the bob cats and bulldozers moved in and tore up the grass, I was furious. I was convinced it was another case of tearing up public space for commerical ventures. I had a mixed reaction when Brisbane Square was unveiled. There was no greenery anywhere. Some eateries (Coffee Club is one of them, no less) and a few shops had opened up. I was right! However, to soften the blow of losing a beloved park, they had built a state of the art library there, and had installed some recycled public art works there. I don't exactly know what they are, but they look like old school colanders that have been welded together into giant balls. They are scattered throughout the square and are actually pretty cool. You can climb up on top of the big ones and chill slightly above the rest of the city goers. The Brisbane City Library is famous now. It's a dominant feature of the city scape, thanks to those giant lego block architectural features. The facilities are fantastic, it's all brand new, spick and span, and it has a cafe inside for when your brain and eyes want to zone out from all the reading you're getting into. As a side note, Brisbane Square becomes a market place on Wednesdays. It's the best for having a deliciously tasty lunch, or getting your farm fresh fruit and veggies while you're in city centre. Bonus! So it turns out that Brisbane Square, despite there being no grass, is still a great place to take a reprieve from inner city hustle. Now, when a friend calls to ask where to meet them, I will usually reply that I'll be sitting on one of the balls in Brisbane Square.

Due to this I was pretty relieved when I saw there's still plenty of public space after the development was completed (I also thought it was pretty nice of them to let it be a park while they were figuring out what to do with it). The Brisbane City Council and Brisbane City Library are pretty big tenants, along with Suncorp bank, so that has probably influenced the amount of public use. There's no more grass, but there are great community markets and plenty of benches to eat your lunch if you need a fresh air break. It's also pretty much right on the river if you feel like taking a stroll afterwards.
