What a strange, fascinating, uniquely Maine place this is!
The Langlais Sculpture Garden celebrates Old Town-born Bernard Langlais' history and legacy as an artist. The preserve is filled with "whimsical arrangements, amid trees, in ponds, and on the exterior walls of barns" (taken from the placard at the entrance of the garden) of ENORMOUS outdoor wooden sculptures. There's a 13-foot horse, Richard Nixon in a marsh, a disinterested seagull sitting on a pole, an Antoine de Saint-Exupéry "Little Prince"-esque elephant that it looks like you can climb into (but there are signs kindly asking that you do not), a hand just saying hi, a squad of bears, and more. There's also lots of flowers and benches to take it all in from. The path that meanders past all the sculptures is flat and very accessible (strollers and wheelchairs welcome), only about ¼ mile long.
If you're en route to Bar Harbor, you oughta take a moment and explore this little spot! read more
