But very friendly. I really liked the fried chicken and the curry. Chicken was so juicy and perfectly fried. The sausage wasn't for me, there was also vegetable mixed in? The chicken Lao pad Thai was a bit too salty, more fish sauce used? Than regular pad Thais, which I'm not used to. The curry was amazing, the flavour had so much depth. The shrimp rolls were okay, deep fried well but nothing special. The nam kao, the rice was crispy but sadly I asked for no cilantro but there was so much in it, I couldn't eat it. I had a great experience at Lao-Thai. The food is really good! Very affordable, and great value. The Fried Chicken was crispy and juicy. The Kao Soy noodle soup was flavorful and unique. The Souk Gai soup was unique, tangy, and refreshing. I have been to Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. I have also had my fair share of those cuisines in Toronto. But Toronto doesn't have enough representation of Lao food. This restaurant seems to be a great representative of Lao food in Toronto. Ambiance is decent and service is great. Do not over order! We had the shrimp appetizer (spicy and wonderful), mango salad ( fabulous), a soup for my wife and a noodle dish for me. Got Lao Thai dishes for a party. About 20 of us. Kids needed mild dishes while some adults preferred spicy. Each dish was so tasty and the variety was perfect. The Nam kao (coconut Lettuce wrap) was my fave! Do you cook Thai food at home because you love the aromas and flavour? Have you ever been to Thailand and noticed something is off about the heat level? Well guess what, real Thai spice is even hard to find in Thailand, because the tourists that have spoiled it for the purists. In many spots, Thailand has switched from their Thai green or red chilli over to something that resembled the green chilli of the Dominican Republic that you find in Food Basics - no flavour or heat unfortunately. I have been to almost every Thai restaurant in Toronto and am always "mildly" disappointed. That's why I keep going back to Lao Thai. The owner Lits and cousin Faye have been cooking traditional flavours since they opened. It's not watered down or an approximation on what things should taste like. It starts with the basics; green curry should use a green Thai chilli as its base. I know a place is not legit by simply asking for chillies on the side. This is true for Thai or Indian food. If they don't have it then they are not getting the flavour right. If you want the flavours you have to tolerate some heat, which westerners can learn to build up to. By going mild--and not complaining--you can have a cultural experience. Unless, you are the type of person that would go to India or Thailand and eat McDonalds. You can do that too, but I don't recommend it. What I'm trying to say is "I FN Love this place." read more

This place was a nice find! We were going to lunch and the spot we were headed to said closed so we made our way into here. The inside is very small with very limited seating so if you plan to come keep that in mind. The menu was very simplified with not many options, but I don't see that as a downside. We ordered the shrimp pad Thai and the red curry and both were very good. I would have to agree with other reviews about the pad Thai being a little soggy towards the bottom since it was sitting in a soup but the flavor made up for it. We didn't ask for any added spice to our meals and they both still had a little kick but not bad at all. The service wasn't the best but only because it was one girl doing the waiting and the cooking. I'd recommend this place for a nice Thai food lunch! read more

A buddy of mine has been raving about this place for a while and it never occurred to me that this place was closer to queen than I thought. Was giving him a hand with repairing something and surprised me with the food he was claiming to be the bomb. When the food came, the smell was quite tantalizing with the herbs and spices that went along with it. The dish we got was the boneless chicken with fried rice. It came in a styrofoam container packed to the brim and than some. The food was so damn good that I had a bit more than half and saved it for later to be consumed. I did not dine in however so my review is based mainly on the takeout experience. The menu here is fairly small but is not a bad thing as sometimes I feel overwhelmed by menus which offer too much. There are still enough choices and diversity to make my decision difficult though. We ended up ordering the Lao Pad Thai and Kua Pho (both with chicken). One thing to note is that we ordered the Pad Thai at level 2 spiciness (1-5 scale) and it was much spicier than I expected for a level 2 so order accordingly. The food itself was good overall. I especially liked the Kua Pho as the flavour was delightful maybe due to the oyster sauce. My partner did however find the Kua Pho to be too salty. When we first stepped into the restaurant I immediately noticed a few things. First is that the restaurant was very small. Second due to the small size of the restaurant it felt a bit cluttered especially in the counter area as there were a lot of things like cardboard boxes here. It was also a little awkward when we stepped in as two staff just looked at and did not acknowledge us when we were standing there waiting to order. It wasn't until another lady walked out from the kitchen that we were able to order (or be acknowledged). Our order was ready in no time and we were happily on our way. Overall I think Lao Thai lived up to my expectations. The taste and portions of the food were good and the prices were reasonable. I will definitely dine in next time. read more

I just finished having lunch here and let me tell you this was absolutely the most flavourful and delicious PHO I have had in a while. I ordered the shrimp PHO LAO Style of course and also got the shrimp fried rolls that comes with a delicious plum sauce and chilli oil which was suggested. Everything was so fresh the shrimp in the PHO Was perfectly cooked and tender, the noodles deliciously chewy, and finally the broth...THE BROTH! It was so flavourful I can say it 1 million times, it was....SO YUMMY. I didn't have to add anything into the soup and everything was absolutely great, including the service. The chef, also server was absolutely amazing, super friendly, great at multitasking, servicing myself and two other ladies, while also doing takeout orders. She helped me out with the menu considering it was my first time and I'm so happy with what I chose. The restaurant is small, but very cozy.. perfect for a quick stop for lunch or dinner with a small group of people! Also the bathroom is very clean. I came across hidden gem when I was living in Toronto for a few months and living nearby. I ordered their Kao Peik Sen and a Thai iced tea and fell in love. The chicken broth is absolutely amazing and so rich with flavour! I am a huge noodle lover and this really hit the spot for me. When COVID hit, I walked over once a week to grab a Kao Peik Sen until it was time for me to return to Vancouver! Unfortunately there isn't a Laotian restaurant that serves this delicious dish in Vancouver and I still think about it from time to time. The Pad Thai was amazing!!! (Had the shrimp) As simple as pad thai is I was blown away by the taste. I had a gig and I ran out to get some take out and stumbled upon this lovely restaurant. I believe since the restaurant is a Lao-Thai fusion their take on this dish is a little different. This had a sweeter taste with so much flavour. Their spice range goes from 1-5 and I choose 3. This was perfect for someone like me that enjoys the burn in your sinuses lol (still super spicy flavour wise as well). If you prefer a milder spice I recommended you choose 1! They also gave me their home made chili oil to try (also amazing) Honestly was so impressed by their pad thai that I'm willing to travel all the way back down Queen West just to have it again. read more

Otherwise it could be a 4 stars We ordered through Ritual and seeing the many positives, I was hoping it would be a good one. The app itself is quite easy and the timing only took 20 minutes at most for us from moment of order to pick up time. I will say finding parking is not always the easiest as FreshCo is right across the street. The restaurant itself is quite small but clean and minimalist in decor. When you walk in, you clearly smell the spices. Everything was ready the moment we stepped in... and pick up was easy. With everything packed nice and neat, we were ready to go with our green curry with shrimp & chicken with 2 order of Laotian coffee. Green Curry - I will agree that the portion seemed quite generous. After eating at Sabai Sabai and Pai, it seemed like the same price point but at least 30% more curry and vegetables. I 200% appreciate they had nice big green vegetables in there. Just very good on that. The heat was spicy (level 3) and you can definitely feel it linger on the tongue. Very good flavour overall and even good the next day with the left overs. The only thing that made this less than stellar was that they forgot the shrimp we paid for ... so only a 3.5/5 Laotian coffee - For starters... its cold. LOL didnt realize that but it tastes like a very flavourful and sweet coffee. It almost feels like there's an added fruit berry note to it. This would be amazing during the summer heat any time. 4/5 Overall, I'd be willing to come back to give it a shot if I'm in the area but I'm hoping the slip up was a one time deal and not a regular thing. read more

This is a tiny casual spot right in the same building as Metro on the corner of Queen and Gladstone. It is quite easy to miss but it is right behind RBC. I visited for lunch based on pretty good yelp reviews. I wanted to check it out for myself. We were greeted by Liz, the friendly owner/chef/server. Yes this is a family ran spot with just her and her mom. The place is tiny with just about 20 seats. She seated us right away. Upon 1st look of the menu, you would know this is not a typical Thai restaurant as it fused with Laotian style of cooking. It is a very small menu. The prices might seem a bit high for lunch for such a tiny spot but it is par with the thai restaurants in the area. Food: We ordered red curry chicken and green curry beef. Each were $12.50. Liz brought family style rice in a large bowl and the 2 large bowls of curries. Now, at first I was a bit verwhelmed, thinking we may have ordered too much for lunch. However, what would've been a heavier dish is more watery. She called it a soup. Both were light dishes filled with vegetables and some meat, not too much meat mostly veggies. The heat of the dishes are rated 1-5 with 5 being the hottest and I opted for 3 for my green curry. It was quite hot but not enough to put one off. Service: the service here is excellent. I noticed the extra things that makes the service stand out. The owner upon bringing our meals offered "if you need more rice let me know and I'll top of up. You can't have too much rice with this soup." I notice her bring a fresh spring roll to a couple beside us on the house because based on their conversation the couple were regulars. The owner was very proud of their restaurant and their food that she was a walking advertisement. She checked in us often but not too much. When we finished she offered not just to pack our leftovers but also gave us more rice for "lunch" the next day. The topper here is she asked us what we thought of the restaurant overall from the food to the sign outside. She's only been open for 5mths. Already with regulars, plenty of them picked up take out. The sign I told her was difficult to see. We got lost looking for it. The sign blended with the vlank signs for the unleased places next door. It was fairly cheap and they come in big portions which is always a plus but they were too watered down for my liking. Having said that, it tasted really good, can't complain. The WOW dish here is the Souk Gai, a quite simple soup with a powerful, clear ginger broth. Supremely addictive, and gets better with each spoonful. It had a lot of chicken in it (these were really tender thigh pieces), green onions and tons of ginger shavings. It's served with rice on the side or to add to the soup. We shared this since we both wanted to try it, but I'm eager to come back and slurp this up all by myself, especially on a cold day. We were super hungry and wanted to try more things since it's a brand new place in the neighborhood, so opted for the Gang Keo, which is green curry (we chose chicken) and the Pad Thai (we chose shrimp). The thing that struck us with both dishes was how everything tasted very healthfully prepared, distinctly NOT overly greasy or salty. The curry sauce was coconutty, but wasn't quite as thick and satiating as other green curries I've had. There was a mega-dose of veggies in the curry, huge pieces of broccoli and cauliflower, not overcooked. I would choose a different meat next time, as this had white chicken pieces, which were a bit dry for my taste. (In contrast to the chicken in the Souk Gai). The Pad Thai was very saucy, which I liked a lot, and the shrimp were large and done right (not overcooked or rubbery). A small drawback here was that it wasn't spicy at all. We were asked (warned?) about the spiciness of the Souk Gai when we ordered (we said we liked spicy), but we weren't asked about the spiciness of the other dishes we chose, so we didn't know we should ask for spice in each of them. (Other customers came in to order take-out at the counter while we were there and they were asked how spicy they wanted their Pad Thai.) This seems to be a family-run restaurant and the service was super friendly and welcoming, and laid back. Comfortable chairs, too. We couldn't finish everything so we got it packed up to go and were offered a top-up of rice to take home, which was a kind touch. The leftovers the next day were great! Kudos to this mom and pop Lao joint for having the courage to serve really authentic food. Each bite was bursting with flavor to get the taste buds tingling. For some people this place might be too authentic but for the adventurous foodie interested to try real Laotian food it's a must . I'll admit I was concerned about the reviews of watery curry but after trying this flavorful dish I will never go back to those sweet overly gloopy coconut curries again. This is the low-key basic Thai/Lao restaurant I've been searching for and it's so conveniently located. Only warning is to take their spice warning seriously. This quaint little thai joint tucked away from Queen Street West has become one of our go-to takeout joints in the area. We prefer take out as the place itself is pretty small and doesn't have a lot of tables if you plan to dine in. The pad thai, green curry, and red curry are all really good and recommendable. One thing to note - as many people have noted here... Ordering things as "medium" spice will be a real kick in the face. They use a "5 star" spice level and I'd personally recommend sticking to a 1 or 2 and adding hot sauce to get to the desired spiciness levels. read more

I recently came across Lao Thai Restaurant on Yelp, and decided to try some Laotian food for the first time. Upon arrival, I found the restaurant itself to be very small, only 1 booth and 4 tables in the back. It was also quite cluttered with bins and foil pans and various equipment all around, so I decided to have take-out instead of eating in as planned. The place did seem quite clean despite the clutter. The young man who was serving was mostly chatting with the cook, as the kitchen is located behind a curtain near the front counter. The menu has some seafood appetizers, soups and salads, and main dishes mostly of curries or noodles with meat/vegetables. I ordered the Lao chicken and fried rice, which is 2 distinct things: a large serving of vegetable fried rice with several large pieces of boneless chicken on top. It looked like fried chicken (and probably was), but not at all greasy. It also was not particularly spicy, despite the comments in several previous reviews. The serving was enough for a full meal, and another full lunch for work the next day. My bill was $15 in total. Overall, the food was good and very filling, but the restaurant itself leaves much to be desired as an eating destination. read more

Wonderful staff, caring and concerned. When they saw we didn't finish our meals, they came to check out why. (We mistakenly requested level 3 / 5 spiciness) I would only recommend removing some clutter from the reception area and turning down the TV volume to make this dining experience better for those dining in. We got a cute little corner booth. I believe the restaurant is family owned so there was only one waiter taking all the orders, bringing out the food and drinks and refilling our water. Although there was only one, he was efficient and very fast. We ordered the Chicken Souk Gai, Beef Pad Thai, and the Chicken Red Curry. Let me just start of by saying that the portions are GENEROUS! Especially for the price range. It is very affordable and you will definitely feel like you ate a feast leaving this restaurant. The Chicken Souk Gai is a laotian style spicy garlic ginger chicken soup. It is absolutely delicious and perfect for the winter because it just warms you right up. Let me just say for those who don't like ginger, don't worry because the flavoring isn't too strong, in fact it was just the right amount. The pad thai was so good, we were about to order a second plate but realized we definitely would've over eaten. The Red curry is standard red curry, so it wasn't the star of the meal.
