Breakfast sandwiches are an undersung hero of the food world, mostly because it's hard to sing when I'm stuffing them in my mouth. (I could take ventriloquism classes, I suppose, but then I'd have to meet people interested in ventriloquism.) There's something that's very comforting about the flavors and textures of scrambled/fried eggs in sandwich form, and Lapu Lapu's versions add the additional pillowy softness of fresh, poofy Pan de Sal buns to really amp up that joyful "biting into a cloud, except it's not just a bunch of visible water vapor" vibe. After months of being a pop up at sister restaurant Kuya Ja's, Lapu Lapu now has its own brick and mortar spot in the Kentlands. Note: their online ordering doesn't have the complete menu, so if you want some tater tots or a meatless/Impossible sando, those are available, just not online. (Lesson learned!) I got two sizeable sandwiches: 1) the Bistek, which has super finely sliced ribeye, a fried egg, pickled onions, white American cheese, lettuce, and garlic adobo mayo; and 2) the corned beef, which has a grill-crusted patty of corned beef in burger/disc-ish form, plus delightfully soft scrambled eggs, Swiss cheese, potato chips (!), and Russian slaw. Both were fantastic, in no small part due to that buoyant, delicious bread as a base. The meats were very well seasoned, and the patty-style corned beef had a bit of a crispy crust that provided a really nice textural contrast (the potato chips in the bistek did the same there). It'd be hard to pick between the two, but I'd probably slightly lean towards the corned beef just because a fluffy bunch of scrambled eggs is pretty unbeatable. Well worth checking out for breakfast or lunch (they're open early, 7-3 Wed - Sun), and I'm looking forward to trying those tots (and frankly, everything else) in the near future! read more

Gee, didn't I write a review after we got the bistek, the chorizo, and spuds to go? Guess we were too busy consuming them. The spuds may be great when they come out, but won't take them out again, and given our reduced appetites will probably share one sandwich next time, and although we liked the chorizo and the bistek, preferring the simplicity of the bistek, I'm looking forward to trying the corned beef with scrambled eggs. You can tell by my grip on those buns that this shit was bussin. My brother and I both agreed that this was the best breakfast sandwich we've ever had in our lives. He got the Spam and I got the Bistek. His Spam sammie was delicious; the scrambled eggs were soft, the smoked Gouda and the Lapu Lapu sauce combo was a whole lotta flavor. But the Bistek sandwich was next level. The white American cheese sauce combined with the oozing yolk gave the Bistek an almost creamy consistency, perfectly coating the tender lemon-soy ribeye in a silky umami blanket. The pickled onion added a bright, tangy element to contrast with the richness of the breakfast sandwich. And the garlic adobo mayo was fire. Almost forgot to mention the bread. The Pan de Sal made by the bakers at Gwenie's is like a Hawaiian bread-brioche hybrid; light n fluffy with a hint of sweetness and a lil toasty crunch, and somehow still thick enough to absorb all the juices from the meat, yolk, and sauce. The guys from Kuya Ja have another hit, the Bistek almost rivals Ekiben's Neighborhood Bird as my favorite sandwich of all time. This is a walk-up style gourmet sandwich restaurant accessible via the park and pedestrian area in the Kentlands between Vasili's and Thai Tanium. Kuya Ja (Javier Fernandez) has been killing it over in North Bethesda area so I had to try this place out once I heard he was coming more upcounty. Lapu Lapu is his take on a similar concept of "fast casual" but with a more sandwich focus rather than the platter style of Kuya Ja's Lechon Belly. I'm not a huge egg guy, so my reviews of the sandwiches are going to be from the perspective of having left out the egg portion which is something Lapu Lapu had no issue accommodating. Bistec - If you want a Filipino take on a Philly Cheesesteak in sandwich form, this is for you. Amazing flavors, perfect texture, supple bun, probably my favorite so far. (cheesy, savory, filling) Corned Beef - Chef Ja's take on the Reuben, corned beef fashioned in a patty with hash, potato chips, an interesting and refreshing slaw. Tied for second for me. (savory, eclectic flavors, awesome texture) Spam - Who can take the famous/infamous canned meat and elevate it to gourmet status? Chef Ja. The flavors are awesome with the gouda and arugula fighting for dominance. Chorizo - If you've had the Choriburger from Kuya Jas, this is similar but exclusively longanisa (sweet sausage). Flavors are incredible with sweet soy coming through. Tied for second for me with the Corned Beef. Paksiw - Probably the most traditional of the Filipino sandwiches, tangy, meaty, stewy. If you like Carolina style pulled pork, this is probably up your alley. Ube soft serve - epic soft serve, delicious and creamy. Ube is an interesting yet approachable flavor, similar to taro but IMO, better. Creamy and sweet without being overbearing. Very balanced ice cream, worth a try, 100%. This is what I've had so far, I've been by a few times already since they opened since it's on the way to my kids' school. Easy to get in and out in the early-mid morning before Kentlands gets crazy, this is going to be my regular breakfast spot. Seating area is limited directly in front, but there's plenty of other communal seating thanks to the awesome Kentlands location. Kuya Ja has always had a special place in my heart, and I'm so happy the owner has created another store in the Kentlands called Lapu Lapu! Taking breakfast up a few levels. My wife got the american breakfast sandwich, eggs cheese and bacon, which she enjoyed. I was more adventurous and opted for the bistek sandwich. Wow was that good. The ribeye steak was very tender and melts in your mouth. The fried egg, pickled onions and garlic mayo were great additions to the ribeye. Lapu Lapu is a great "modernized" version of Filipino breakfast. Before you head there, just know that everything there are sandwiches so don't go there expecting a rice platter of some kind. I tried the spam, chorizo and bistek sandwiches which were all pretty good, but the chorizo was the standout. If you are a fan of tocino for a classic Filipino breakfast you will be a fan of the chorizo sandwich. The tater tots that they sell are also good as well. Ordered the ube affogato and bistek sandwich. My sister ordered the cornbread sandwich. The affogato was excellent and is a very good item that showcases the earthy-nuttiness of ube. That flavor profile and coffee blend extremely well together--will definitely order again on a subsequent visit. The bistek sandwich was also delightful. Full of flavor, very beef forward (appropriately seasoned), and the toppings used provided a good textural contrast without taking away from the meat. Having took a bite of my sis' cornbread sandwich, I can say the flavor is good. They've gone up at least 3 bucks since they opened on even a bacon, egg, and cheese. Been going here since they opened a few years back. It's a real neighborhood gem that I'm not sure that many people know about. Excellent breakfast/lunch sandwiches. I believe the rolls are made daily and everything tastes fresh. A cute place with friendly service and outside seating. Prices have gone up and have gotten a bit high, but that hasn't stopped me from being a frequent customer. And, if you haven't tried it yet, you need to stop in for their ube sometime this summer. Love the hash browns, the coin shapes are truly the best ration of potato to crunch. Paksiw was so juicy and flavorful, loved. The corned beef was good as well and tasted a little similar to a pastrami sandwich if you like that. The Ube affogato was a big leg down. My only complaint is that it takes a long time to order on the weekend, which is fine if you're with a group of people or in good weather.
