The downstairs of this fabulous establishment is full of the most adorable trinkets, gifts, jewellery, stationery, homewares and toiletries - almost too much to take in and very dangerous if one is feeling in a spending mood. I actually ended up buying *myself* a gift instead of the person I was buying the card for! Upstairs there is an interesting collection of vintage furniture and bric-a-brac but it is the cornucopia of delectable gifts and bibelots downstairs that has captured my heart. The gorgeous broaches, scarves and handbags, knitted baby clothing, mugs, keyrings, dinner mats and coasters (I bought myself a rather fabulous 'Liverpool's Most Iconic Sights' coaster set - photo below!), fridge magnets and ornaments. I was extremely tempted by the 'retro bunny with a baby's face' lamp but managed to restrain myself. The best thing about Larks is that you don't actually NEED stuff from there...you just WANT it. Because having a cubic zirconia broach shaped like the Eiffel Tower makes you feel happy doesn't it? And that's near enough to needing for me.

It's very pink in here and slightly overwhelming but you can't help but have a bit of a root around the little dressing-tables which are crammed with goodies. The kind of stuff you wouldn't buy for yourself but might appreciate as a gift, even if it is slightly tacky. They also have vintage stuff available upstairs and fun cards, it's slightly overpriced for what it is really but worth a look if you have a bit of time on your hands.

Jeeves offer an engraving service which is very reasonably priced. The ornate lettering is stunning and can transform a relatively mundane gift into an invaluable possession. I have given and received several items engraved by Jeeves over the years, which range from compact mirrors and lipstick cases to hairbrushes and spoons and the standard has been consistently high. I recently had a number of small jewellery pieces of sentimental value converted into bracelet charms. The Gold Centre is another one of those opportunist establishments which is doing a great job of stating the obvious fact that gold is worth money. This place looks tacky and really is, the quality of the products is terribly poor and the staff verge on being outright rude which is understandable given their working environment. There is nothing except desperation for money which draws people to this shop which is basically a dressed up pawn store. On the whole this is not a very pleasant place to visit and unless you are REALLY strapped for cash I can not find any reason for people to frequent this store.

They sell a range of jewellrey including wedding and civil partnership rings, necklaces, watches and other every day jewellrey. They also provide an engraving service, allowing you to mark the jewellrey with a special message for a loved one or family member. Jewellrey can be expensive, and Wongs is no exception, but fortunately they offer a 0% interest finance option when you spend over £500. The jewellrey is gorgeous,and of an extremely high quality. I especially like the fact that you can work with the staff to design your own bespoke design. However, don't be surprised when you won't have any trouble spending over the £500 threshold for finance, it'll be a breeze.

The staff are very friendly and professional. They greet you warmly when you enter and are happy to help. The jewellery here is not cheap, but everything looks so lovely and is of a very high quality. In a former life I was bought an engagement ring from here which had to be re-sized and this was done quickly at no extra charge. The ring is no longer on my finger but I got my compliments when it was.

The owner is somewhat eccentric, telling many a tale about his life and the history of the local area but it all adds to the charm of the shop, which stands out amongst the other local jewellers (of which there are quite a few). Despite his eccentricity, he is still very knowledgeable and has given me great assistance and advice on many visits. I have been there on a few occasions for watch repairs, as well as browsing their products, and have found their service to be remarkably prompt, usually repairing my items in a couple of hours if they have time. The other members of staff there are always polite, friendly and ready to assist at all times as well, meaning going to A J Rogers is always a pleasant experience, whether you buy anything or not.

Two less than…read moreable men who do not give out receipts when you leave your jewellery with them, who 'faff' about, are 'indirect', and when faced with a complaint, take the 'defensive mode' rather than being professional and curteous and apologetic for their gross failings as a 'repairer' of jewellery. I had a bad feeling as I entered the shop and wish I had taken note of my obvious correct intuition. I paid £29 for two small repairs to a gold necklace and a gold bracelet. I picked them up after more than 10 days of the jewellers having them - getting no confirmation that they were ready (i had to ring them) and then, after wearing them for no more than 5 hours, the bracelet dropped off my wrist (luckily I was indoors) and i couldn't believe that it had broke. I immediately felt wary about my necklace and as i undone the clasp, that broke too. I rang the shop and told them and they said to bring the items in, they would look at them and make 'their' appropriate verdict on what to do. I said I wanted a refund. I returned to the shop and the older man was less than apologetic or understanding and said I would have to leave the items with them and they would make their decision. I had to demand they deal with me there and then and make a refund. I was told i would have to wait as they were in the middle of another job that could not wait. I ensured they gave me receipts for leaving the items in their care. I would not leave the shop. I heard laughter from behind the scenes as they both disappeared. The younger man came forth and told me he would have to take the gold bolt clasp off that they had repaired... i asked if my original would be put back on - he replied 'you'll get one similar', I was unhappy about this, to which he replied, 'the world doesn't stop for you to get what you want'. Disgraceful trading. Avoid this shop.
