Indoors it feels similar to Mextizo in Cedar Rapids and that's a good thing. Floor was SLIPPERY even without it being wet so step lightly. Service was slow but friendly. Waited for our drinks, waited for our food, waited for our boxes, waited for the bill. It was 11:15 when we arrived for lunch so it wasn't busy yet. Salsa was good, chips are slightly thicker than I prefer but they were fresh and warm. I ordered Chori-Queso and was happy I did. So were my friends. My margarita was solid. Rocks, salt, lime. Sweet, sour, good times. My friends ordered a lunch size seafood chimichanga and a seafood enchilada. They looked good and according to them they were good. I had the dinner-sized Pollo con Arroz, it was good. I ate half and took the rest home. The chicken was cooked properly, the queso was good and the rice was as well. Very pleased with my meal. I ordered a side of beans and this is where things went sideways. I'm not sure where Mexican places get these beans, I'm assuming they're canned, because they all look and taste the same - they're blended(?), flat, flavorless and would say they had a slight chemical aftertaste. The beans were just plain awful and every place that serves this type of refried beans, they taste awful there as well. Overall a positive experience. Expect a longer than normal stay as the servers seem to run slower than other restaurants. If you go, order a margarita but skip the beans, ask for double rice or rice and a salad instead, you'll be happy you did. 3/5, will return.

The Queso had a spice to it that even my kids enjoyed, and the Molcajete bowl was so good! It included all the things we love-a fresh avocado, chorizo, Mexican cheese, steak, pork, and cactus. The seasoning and spices were perfect! Wonderful! Hoping this place sticks around! This is our second time here and no complaints!

Walking in from the bright sun, it was dark inside -- almost too dark at first -- but we were greeted kindly right away and pretty quickly felt like we were being treated like family. They let us plug in devices to charge, waters and drinks came quickly, and the prices were very reasonable. I tried a suggested non-menu crab quesadilla with raspberry vinaigrette, and it was perfect light fare for a mid-ride meal. Kim had the roast beef hoagie with slaw and a pickle, and she enjoyed hers too. Nothing was necessarily fancy or over-the-top special, but the food was good, hit the spot, and was respectably priced. The place has a cool old-town, small-town bar vibe and clearly caters to locals, which I actually liked. Everyone seemed to know each other. The bathrooms were very small, and the whole place is a bit tired, but somehow that kind of worked with the ambiance. From the outside, it is pretty unassuming, and if you were not looking for it, you could easily go right by. But if we find ourselves back in Vinton, we would for sure stop again. The service was FANTASTIC!

There is a state mental facility outside of Independence, Iowa, and hence the theme of the Sanity Room. But don't think it's cold and creepy. No. The owners have gone to great lengths to make this an inviting place complete with the unique chairs, private small booths, and kitschy motto signs surrounding the place (one of my faves: "I can only please one person per day. Today I choose me."). They serve shots in pill bottles and syringes, and the staff will even make you don a patient gown, sit in the old hospital bed (vintage and they claim it came from the state hospital), and then administer the shots while wearing a doctor's coat. Genius! After you are vaccinated, you get a sticker. As if the booze wasn't awesome enough! And let's talk about the booze. This is a full bar that also features some great craft and local beers, as well as a local wine. Iowa wine, you ask? It was by far the best I sampled and I bought a bottle. Yeah, you can buy their stock too, if they have enough. As for specialty cocktails? Look no further than the bloody mary made with Chardonnay. That's right, I said the bloody mary is made with wine. And it's delicious. Since wine doesn't have as much alcohol as vodka, you might have to drink a lot to get the same effect, but with a taste like this you won't mind. The Sanity Room does seem to be a work in progress as they only have one unisex bathroom but they are working on more accommodations. Still, it's small so you can't imagine there would ever be a long line. It also sits in the back of an antique store, so blink and you might miss it. I know we did the first time we walked by, but the second time we took a chance and walked in and I am so glad we did! There's even a back patio area that overlooks the Wapsipinican River. The only bad thing would be that there are no TVs in the Sanity Room. I question if this would change the integrity of the bar, as it might compromise the theme and inviting nature. But I am a sports nut and there would be nothing better than belly up at the bar, drinking a glass of La T Da & watching the game! Seriously, if you're ever in Independence and you don't stop in here, you're missing out. I can't wait to get back and get my dose of Sanity!

It was a slow Tuesday but the service was pleasant and everyone was very nice and service was quick. We didn't wait more than 10 mins for our food to get to us. The vibe of Hip-Stir ha always been cool and kinda niche and this was no exception. If you don't know that they changed up their menu.. they did. It's not bad by any means, but I am pretty heartbroken about them removing the Spinach Artichoke dip. It was the best around and I'll be overjoyed when it returns. The new menu still features ramen, sandwiches and other yummy dishes. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese with my entree and the food was out in about 20 minutes which is great! Unfortunately my Mac and cheese was forgotten- our server apologized and went to "get that started", no worries. The next time our server was at our table I inquired about it again since it had been about 10 minutes, but she had forgotten yet again. She rushed back to "get it started", ok. At this point everyone was getting full and I didn't even want it anymore, but she returned a few minutes later with it. A little frustrating. The ramen has changed, unfortunately. My sister ordered the spicy pork (which has historically been amazing) and didn't even finish it, which is pretty weird for her lol. I tasted nothing but soy sauce and spice. I'm not sure where the aromatics went, but they need to bring them back asap. Don't order the carrot cake. It was served over coffee (yes, hot coffee) which ruined it. The cake was overly soggy and tasted of nothing but the coffee flavor. I'm sure it would have been great without it, the frosting looked great. I'll probably be back and love supporting the Fun not Fancy group in CR, but last night was a miss.
