Absolutely the best food that you can find in WV. My mother wanted seafood, which great seafood is hard to get here. I called LAURY'S. They had a shrimp and scallop pasta, but mom and I had our eye on a Seafood Augratin dish listed on an old menu but not the new one. I called the restaurant. They were well into serving dinner, which usually prevents them from doing take out. She checked with the kitchen to see if they could accommodate us tomorrow. She came back and said that I could pick it up in 40 minutes!! I got there and talked to the hostess. I told her that 40 years ago I had had my rehearsal dinner when Otis was on Capital St. The hostess added bread, asparagus, artichoke hearts in a cheese sauce that was to die for! I told her that my mom wasn't as mobile and I didn't think that she could manage the stairs. I told her my mom was soon to be 87, so she gave her a free piece of cake! I brought it home and we agreed it was the best thing we had ever eaten. Nothing left for the dog, to her dismay. This was the first time I had been in his new location. It's charming and elegant. The service is attentive and outstanding. Otis Laury has always been the best chef in WV. He has cooked for the Governor's Mansion and The Greenbriar. It doesn't get any better than this. We came to Laury's for dinner thanks to online search recommendations. We are so glad we found this restaurant. Beautiful location, in a historic building across from the river, with great views of it. Very elegant and classy restaurant, pretty decor and ambiance. The service was very attentive and not stuffy. To compliment it all there was the food, everything was made very well and tasted so good. Also, it is one of the few fine restaurants anywhere that still prepares table side dishes, like the Caesar salad and the banana fosters that we ordered. They have a full bar, a large wine selection, and several options for port by the glass. We were surprised that it was not overpriced like many restaurants at this level. Unfortunately, our Laury's experience was a disappointment. We arrived at 7 and did not leave until 9:30 due to slow service. It took overly long for the waiter speak with us and ask for our wine selection, arrival of the wine was slow. Bread did not get to the table for 20 or more minutes. It was a struggle to place an order for a second glass of wine after having salad and before the main course, which took an eon to arrive. There was no word from the server about why this was the case. Due to the late hour and lack of engagement with staff, dessert did not invite our attention. The duck was fabulous, the other dishes were not remarkable. As servers, hostess and manager walked thru the area no one made eye contact with us. Apparently, the restaurant has no expediter. As time went on it was clear that the service we experienced did not match the price point of the menu nor the elegance of the restaurant. This is a shame. We will not return. read more

So what was supposed to be a 1 night trip ended up being 2 nights with the opportunity to also check this place out. The location was easy to find. Parking lot is in front of the building next to railroad tracks on the other side of the bridge from downtown. Not lit up very well and not sure how safe the area is but I felt fine with my husband. It was a wednesday night, we did not make reservations and were able to walk in and be seated right away. The place is magnificent inside, Very formal decor. I adore the second level area that overlooks the restaurant. Greeted by beverage servers, filled our waters, tried to take drink order but we wanted a minute to peruse their offerings. Our server Darlana introduced herself in a timely manner, no specials offered. She didn't seem very welcoming, kind of cold at first - actually it took most our meal for her to warm up. we put our drink orders in 2 old fashions as well as their portobello mushroom ravioli appetizer. I believe Darlana made our cocktails and they were scrumptious! When our mushrooms came out, we put in our dinner order. By the end I think Darlana warmed up to us and it was nice to see her personality finally come out. Unfortunately at this time, a single gentleman was seated less than 2ft from behind me joining us in the corner. In the long run this was not a good move considering we were the last 2 customers that walked in, why did we have to be seated in the same section together? Fail on the hostess part or managers - whomever made that call. This gentleman was very very rude - atleast towards other patrons in the restaurant. Throughout our meal he made several calls and what I mean by several, he called multiple people to tell them where he was, discuss work or someone - Basically if he wasn't talking to a server or they weren't talking to him, he was on the phone talking to someone. The servers were very chatty with him as well so there was constant conversation behind us the entirety of our meal. TOTALLY KILLED THE VIBE FOR US. A romantic dinner in a 5 star restaurant gone. Back to the food. The portobello mushroom appetizer was amazing!! The sauce was so creamy, each bite melted in my mouth. Totally recommend this for those who like mushrooms. As for the entree - we decided to split our dinner as we were traveling and had no needs for leftovers. We shared the French onion soup. It was very amazing! I don't want to forget to mention their rolls at this point. I am a bread/butter person and they are baked per order. Delicious! Warm! Fresh! Next we ordered the table side Caesar. Unfortunately where they seated us and the other gentleman, our server said she could not pull the cart up to our table as described in the menu so she was across the way preparing our salad. Well that took the whole point away of table side and the feeling of 5 star. Why offer something you cannot deliver. With that being said, Darlana did a great job preparing and made do with the work space provided, we understand its not her fault Laury's mislead people on their menu as far as service style available. The salads were plentiful and fresh. I told my husband I could be finished at this point but we still had our final entree about to make its debut at our table any minute. For our final entree we decided to share the Steak Au Poivre and side of macaroni. My husband loves peppercorn steak, Im not such a big fan of peppercorn and usually just cut the outside off, plus I knew my husband would be eating most of it so I went with the flow. Let me tell you, even though we split this piece of meat, our plates both arrived with a nice portion on each. The peppercorn was more like grounded than the actual whole pieces of peppercorn. The Steak Au Poivre is an amazing steak - very flavorful, juicy, easy to chew - I couldn't stop even though I said I was done after the soup lol. What I couldn't finish my husband was happy to devour for me. The macaroni was blah. Would not recommend. I was actually very disappointed in its display and taste. Rather than creamy and cheesy, it was oily and seemed over-baked or twice baked to make it the consistency it was served at - definitely a kitchen issue that needs addressed. I do not recommend the macaroni. Dessert! I said no way but my husband insisted. They do offer a table side Banana Foster which sounded really good but with the experience of table side and knowing it really was not, we decided to go with the pretzel encrusted caramel brownie alamode. It covers every single tastebud possible. Not too rich - PERFECT! We were seated next to a window. views of downtown Charleston and Kanawha River - it was dark, not pretty and my husbands view was the side of a bridge. No lights or glamour from the downtown side. My husband and I just moved to Charleston about 2 months ago. So I came across this place on yelp while searching for a place to have his birthday dinner. It was a bit pricey from the looks of the online menu so we knew it was somewhat fancy, the pictures looked nice, and it had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. Everything was AMAZING. We started with a Moscow mule, I had the spinach salad and he had the lobster bisque (one of the better ones I've ever tasted!) He had the filet mignon for dinner with mashed potatoes and I had the Salmon and shrimp. Instead of the normal side that came with it, I tried a corn fritter instead. It was scrumptious. My husband even got a free dessert for his birthday with a candle! I thought that was a very nice touch for a fancy restaurant. I think the menu is priced comparable to most restaurants which was lower than I expected. Only the entrees are a little pricey but worth every penny! The decor inside it very pretty. You're sectioned off with big windows surrounding you so you have a great view of the city. Gary was great to us. All of the servers we overheard seemed very helpful and super friendly. First, let me comment on the location and decor. This is fully rehabbed train station with restaurant added. Charleston is not a very pretty city since it is industrial in all aspects, from chemical to coal. With Laury's Charleston now has two standouts when it comes to buildings and decor. Number 1 is the Capitol Building IMO one of the best state locations in the nation. Now, Number 2 is Laury's. Service: This is five star all the way. The staff is excellent, frankly some of the best I have encountered during my travels. They go the full extra mile to make sure you are well taken care of. Apps: Another five star again due to the service. Our wait staff took all the appetizers and not only brought them out as order but took the time and broke each one down as a individual served plate to each person. I have NEVER encountered this and quite frankly it was a hit. How classy is that? Pure. Meal: Since I do not eat red meat or pork by choice I chose the fish, the Sea Bass aka Dog Fish. My dish was delivered at temperature and cooked very well. Impressed. A side of rice and spinach base completed the meal. The rest of the table all steaks. All were delivered as ordered with complements positive. Dessert: I do not eat desserts either (darn heart!) but the other members at the table went full cheesecake. Looked good. (pout) Wine: Yes, the wine snob had to get into this. Chose the Frog Cab, decanted and served. Their wine list is very good and even as an upscale restaurant (markup) was in the realm of reality. You can go basic red to Stags, Silver Oak, and the Nickle. The Frog is a good choice for a Cab. They had a Malbec selection too, but since we are now into mostly 2011 vintage at many restaurants I steer clear. 2011 is not a good Malbec year. Charleston has a gem here! A wonderful establishment in Charleston, our "go-to" dinner spot for special occasions (and otherwise). Fantastic food, attentive service, elegant ambiance and gorgeous river views. The Chef is extremely accommodating of special requests and any dietary considerations. My personal favourites: all the soups are lovely- a very rich lobster bisque, lovely Bouillabaisse, and French Onion done perfectly, Goat Cheese salad, Soft-Shell Crabs, Beef Maison, Sea Bass Imperial, and of course their souffles. Fine food in an elegant atmosphere. The staff wear black tie and are schooled in both etiquette and local charm. The menu is extensive, and features high-quality, delicious cuts of meat, particularly the steak Diane, and the table-side Caesar salad is very well done. Fine wine abounds, and the restaurant features a versatile range of cocktails and a well-trained barman; it is one of the rare local establishments that have cocktail onions on hand, so try the Gibson martini! Deserts are OK, but nothing special. The location, inside the old C&O Railroad depot (currently served by Amtrak), is absolutely gorgeous. My brother and his wife flew in from Washington state and we took my mother out for her birthday dinner so it was me my two brothers sister in law my mother father daughter and grandson the waiter Charles was knowledgeable about the entire menu. I've always heard amazing reviews and I see why as soon as you set down order drinks then appetizers our waiter made zero mistakes and it's a tradition out family used to do with our father who has passed away would come every Christmas take us all to dinner and our stepfather whom I relate to as a father and seeing my brother and his wife gather us all together as we used to and it has been years and years. All I can say is it's been about 15 plus years that my dad would come take my aunt pat and our entire family for Christmas dinner I know it would be hard for my muddle brother and his wife to pick up the tradition but the evening was 100% from past experiences and emotions to new members my grandson and my brothers beautiful wife candy my mom and 2(nd) dad. One of the top 5 restaurants I have ever eaten at in my lifetime. I rate it 5 stars. Escargot was amazing! Rack of lamb was perfection. Grand Marnier soufflé was stunning! Coffee service at the end of the meal was so beautiful: chocolate chips in a small bowl, cinnamon sticks as well, sweeteners, and whipped cream (the real stuff) in a tiny aperitif glass. Incredible food in a beautiful setting. Right on the river in an old train station, this was a magical dinner. The food was amazing through and through. My salad was one of the best I have ever had, while my dining partner actually stopped making sense because he was too invested in his duck entree to talk logically. Other reviewers were practically poetic over the filet mignon, claiming that the steak was so tender it could be cut with a fork. My husband ordered it, and he had to ask for a steak knife to cut it because the regular table setting knife wouldn't do the job. The steak came with mashed potatoes, no other vegetable. Great dinner! We were driving all day and not really dressed for such a nice restaurant, but everyone made us feel welcome. Special Kudos to our waiter, Drake. He was terrific. My wife's birthday was this weekend and we had planned to go to Prime 44 West at the Greenbrier Resort. We called to make a reservation and they said they were only allowing resort guests because of COVID. We decided to try Laury's as neither of us had been there and only heard good things. We made a reservation and it was absolutely the best decision. Cari, our server was super attentive and friendly. The ambience from the jazz music to the lighting were perfect. My steak was cooked to perfection and the Yukon mashed potatoes were just smooth velvety goodness. My wife said her seafood pasta diablo was delicious as well. My vodka martinis were cold and artfully mixed. Since it was her birthday they provided us with dessert. We chose the Bananas Foster, which they prepare table side. We did not regret our decision. We haven't had this seamless a dinner experience in a long time.
