I went for an early drink on Christmas eve before the full mayhem began. The place wasn't quite as I expected inside. It a little more down to earth and definitely smaller than I'd expected from the building outside. Definitely worth a look, since at the end of the day it's important to try everything oncethough the atmosphere wasn't outstanding I'm not sure I'll be back for seconds.

Occasionally a band (in the past usually a dire covers act, but I may've just chosen duff nights) will grace the front of the pub. There's a fish restaurant downstairs, my only experience of which was the paella which was a little stingy on the fish portions compared to it's continental cousins but a tasty effort nonetheless. There's a nice rear patio in which to relax in the summer. Overall this is definitely one of the better places to grab a drink in Tunbridge Wells. A good effort in a place that often makes so little.

Not a Spanish person in sight. It was 7:30 on a Tuesday evening and they had ran out of bread, a tapa's bar that has no bread, I couldn't believe it, thats unheard of and it would never happen in Spain, there would be a riot, I still can't believe it or the fact someone just couldn't use 1 single brain cell and pop out and buy some locally. They ran out of bread. This place is about as authentic as a Turin shroud beach towel.

The dining room area has a few rooms - two with seating, and one where the continental breakfast items were available. I gave up meat for lent, so being able to order one of my favorite breakfast dishes, with ham, on Sunday morning, was even better. The bistro offers a continental breakfast, and a number of hot, made to order items. The eggs Benedict were delicious. The right amount of hollandaise sauce, perfectly cooked eggs with runny yolks, and ham. Great place to enjoy breakfast!

It's not cheap... But that's not why you go to a place like this. The restaurant reminds me of a bistro I used to visit in Paris many moons ago... Not to dressed up (you can roll in with a t-shirt on and a pair of jeans), it's got it's traditional heart on it's walls i.e. a lot of French memorabilia hang there, reminding one of why the food's so good here. From pâtés, salads and soups to steak and chips, fish dishes and pork and lamb... The food is always hearty, divine and nourishing here. Deserts are well worth checking out too... ! For me the wines are great here... Such a selection to choose from too. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, etc... They're all represented adequately here with the absolute best and all the good varieties in between. The atmosphere during the day is light and airy, and with views over Calverly Park, you get the feeling you're out in the country side here. In the evening it's dimly lit, with an air of proper French style to it. Bustling and busy, the chatter is always heart warming. I generally like the building too. While it's not too pompous, there still is a touch of 'regal' to it. No wonder the late Queen Victoria used to come back to this building time and again when visiting Tunbridge Wells. Certainly it's first and foremost a hotel, but still, if you like your gourmet French food... You shouldn't forget the bistro is open to any discerning visitors who dare to walk in unannounced off the street.

I've only ever been to the bar, but with its cask lined walls and comfy armchairs it makes for a really cosy place to relax and explore the vineyard's excellent selection of wines. Moreover, if you visit on a sunny day you also have the option of sitting outside on their adjoining terrace, which has stunning views of the Kentish countryside. It may not be the cheapest place for a drink, but I've found Chapel Down's wine to be consistently good and it's definitely well worth a visit. Of course, if you can't find a nice, sober person to drive you there and back and you don't feel like hiking, there is a shop downstairs which sells all of their wines to take away. It also does tastings and sells a range of deli products which are perfect for a snack or a spur-of-the-moment picnic in the countryside.
