There were so many goodies to choose from, I wasn't sure what to try. I settled on a small scoop of Pantera Rosa ice cream and 3 small pastries called mantecados. After taking a bite of a mantecado, I realized that I know this cookie well. It's basically the same as a Filipino polveron. Confitería Santa Lucía's mantecados are crumbly, sweet, and topped with a fine glaze of sugar. Every day in Spain has been an interesting history lesson in the origin of the familiar foodstuffs of my childhood. There was only one person working and the people in front of me were ordering lots of pastries for a party, so it was a bit of a wait. The counter person was a bit gruff. And the ice cream was nothing to write home about. Thus the 4-star review. But would I come back here to try their other delicious desserts? Absolutamente.

This Carrefour Express was my Carrefour Express while I lived in Salamanca. I frequently stopped in for a few quick items when I needed to cook at home, which was just around the corner. They have most of the staples--meats, vegetables, fruits, bread, some cleaners, toilet paper, paper towels, water, beer, wine. (Wine is behind the counter.) But there aren't any speciality items (such as gluten-free) or an extensive selection of whatever you're looking for (thus the "Express" designation). They do, however, have a selection of seasonal foods such as turón and polvorones. Usually there is a homeless guy sitting in front of the store, which is unusual in this area. The staff--except for one person--are all fairly nice. The older lady who works at night is frequently grumpy and was sour that I didn't know to weigh my polvorones before I got to the front, which was even more nerve wracking with my limited Spanish. Shout out to the African guy, though, who was the only one who was *always* friendly and welcoming. If you want lots of variety and a better choice of meats, cheeses, and natural/"bio" foods, it's better to walk the extra way to the Carrefour on Calle Toro. It's multi-level, has a sushi counter, an extensive selection of meats and cheeses, and has lots of natural food choices. This Express is good in a pinch, but it wouldn't be my first choice for everything else.

If a restaurant is very busy and needs to move a single diner to a smaller table that only seats two, I would understand, but then you ask the patron, with an apology, to select a different table, not simply move them when they are, literally, not looking. After dinner, I stepped up to the bar and asked to speak to the manager, and the portly, slightly scruffy gentleman indicated that I could speak with him. When I had related what had taken place, he said that I had a nice meal and said that I should "leave him alone." Shocked, I politely asked for his name. He refused to give it, which is why I described him as portly and slightly scruffy because I have no other way to identify him. So if you are eating alone and perhaps even in a group, chances are not small that you will be treated with as much understanding and civility as I was. The food was good. The drink was good. The atmosphere was good. The servers were kind and helpful. The portly, scruffy, nameless "boss" thoroughly ruined what might have been a perfectly lovely evening.

Although I couldn't buy much to take home with me because there are pretty strict laws about organic material going into the US, I enjoyed the sights and smells and even had a little wine and cheese snack.
