Not only were we warmly welcomed but we had an amazing wine tasting paired with a delicious charcuteries/cheese plate, melt in your mouth meatballs, mini sardines. The real Stars of the experience were of course the wines. We went By the glass, starting with a delicious Philliponat brut Champagne, an Alice Corton, and then a Cotes du Rhône. If we come back to Reims, we will definately call ahead to make a reservation, or get down on our knees to beg for a table.

The tables are really close together and the candle light is magical. You can't help but get to know your neighbors which added to the convivial atmosphere. They have an extensive wine list, by the bottle for the most part. It wasn't a problem to consume with the steady stream of nibbles we ordered. The Iberico was delicious. We also got the Mont d'Or: a baked rind cheese served with a baguette, roasted potatoes and salad. It was luxurious. The cheese was enclosed in a wooden basket and when baked turned molten in the middle while the rind became cracklingly crisp. Wow! I suggest their cote du bouef. Others ordered it, a huge platter of melting cheese, beef, roasted potatoes and more. Oh and dessert we had a duo of crime brûlée (vanilla and pistachio) which came with crime brûlée ice cream on the side. The staff speak French and were happy to help even though they were so busy. A real gem.

The wine bottles decorating the shelves are also the wine list, prices marked on each bottle for take out, add 8€ for drink in. A simple, effective way to Puck your fancy. We were cold and damp and our friendly waitress suggested 4 bottles, ranging in price and potency. Our choice was spot on- warm, fruity and capable of creating a mellow feeling. We also sampled the excellent 'simple' board of charcuterie, cheeses, fruit, nuts, olives and pickles. What a feast this was. Every mouthful a different taste combination and every one delicious. To top a great evening we were offered suggestions of places to visit tomorrow...all good although we might just wend our way back to Aux 3 P'tits Bouchons. A fabulous find.

We made a reservation a few hours before, and were accommodated for lunch on a Thursday with our large party without any issues. We were sat against the wall with the fold down movie theater seats but be careful - when I stood up I ended up pulling my seat off and was no longer able to use the chair! Most of the diners in my party shared different burgers (which they all enjoyed and seemed to be enough to share). I selected the Le Wok de Canard which was a duck stir fry. It was very delicious and the meat was quite tender. It was served on a bed of thinly slides vegetables like carrots and zucchini. For being located in a smaller city (not Paris) I would have expected the servers to be a little more friendly but they were friendly enough for it not to impact our experience. I would recommend Les Cornichons but allow for more time to enjoy the decor and atmosphere.

Though the place he suggested looked dubious, we sat down and figured (eventually) the guy at Aux Crieurs was probably having a good laugh at our expense. (We were told they, Aux Crieurs, purchased only the precise amount of food for the number of diners each evening. Really? What dining establishment doesn't purchase sufficient provisions?? Aux Crieurs, apparently!) He did tell us, though, that they would be open until midnight and suggested we return after dinner. On our stroll back through town, we did see far more promising dining spots near Aux Crieurs. We found the place to be about half full and sat down at the very empty table we had seen earlier in the evening. We ordered a few different white wines...nothing exceptional. My friend poked around the shop and spoke (French) with the owner/manager who seemed disinterested in conversing with a wine industry veteran from overseas. Recommending a bottle, we gave the okay and this was opened and poured...this was another one of those wines that's fashionable in some wine circles, more for its novelty than for its quality. The owner and his counter help engaged in a bit of chit chat while leaning on the wine bar and waiting for a couple of groups which had been dining there to wrap up their evening. As we sipped the bottle of red over the course of next next half hour, no effort was made to sell the remaining tables a glass or bottle of wine or, perhaps, a mineral water. The Aux Crieurs crew wanted to go home. It was perhaps 11:15 or 11:30 when those stragglers stood up and made their way out the door. At this point the owner began turning out the lights and we were asked to leave, despite having half a bottle of wine remaining. Perhaps our experience is abnormal, but should we find ourselves in Troyes again, this is the last place we would consider as a dining or wining option!
