Aveyron and the Chateau de Balsac is now one of my favorite places in the world! The hosts are so caring and welcoming, they know a lot about the history of the Chateau and the secret places of this region. They are also great cooks and the traditional food in Aveyron is amazing! I have never tasted anything like farçou or aligot anywhere else. The castle itself is so beautiful... the garden and the chateau's animals bring so much comfort and connection with the nature. Our first visit to the Chateau at Balsac began one night, with the proprietor greeting us with open arms for our luggage and an umbrella in a pouring rain! We were whisked into a warm homey Gite apartment, with an ample well equipt kitchen, charming dining area, washer, and dryer and a sitting room lined with comfortable sofas. Beds and showers were up a flight of stairs. The following morning, a look out of the bedroom window afforded a breathtaking view of the French countryside, rolling hills, lush fields, and medieval architecture. Anyone can book a cookie-cutter hotel in the south of France. But this was something enticingly different. We used the site as the hub of a wheel and every day took historical, educational or athletic treks out into the countryside. The jewels of the experience were the hosts and owners of the chateau, Roland and Malana. Their avid, witty conversation, helpful pointers, and expertise on French history, and local sights and events were so valuable.
