Good, not great but the food was very consistent and that was the case for six different entrees we ordered. Really, the only thing keeping them from five stars was the slow service we received. It got very busy shortly after we arrived and suddenly it was difficult even to get a glass of water, much less anything else. The restaurant is small but welcoming. The decor was really intricate and fun to check out. The server was very kind to explain the dishes (in English) and my vegan friend was able to get changes made to fit his diet. While in Paris we wanted to get a quick spice fix so hit Yelp to find a good Indian restaurant. We strolled into Maharaja to find a very strong decor that was a bit overwhelming at first. Like many places in France there was no air conditioning. Not at all deterred, my group of 6 sat down to order. We started with apps including seekh kababs and veggie samosas. Both of which were solid. I enjoyed a cold refreshing Cobra beer, which didn't stay cold long due to the heat. Next for the main course, we ordered the chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, lamb curry, and poulet makhani. The lamb curry was delicious. The rest of the dishes all seemed to be made of the same sauce and tasted the same. Not sure why they call these different names when they look and taste identical. The chicken dishes were average though. The garlic naan didn't have any hint of garlic. With reasonable prices and decent service, I would venture here again if in a pinch for spice. read more

How do you find excellent Indian food in Paris? Seek out this hole in the wall joint and you'll have three things apparent as you enter: 1. The owner is genuine and cares about your experience and the food. 2. Authentic Indian cuisine (I've been to a lot of places and this one is excellent.). Best of all they will prepare it expertly to your level of "heat" making the experience wonderful. 3. The atmosphere is small and quaint, aromas fill the air and the decor matches the beauty and simplicity of this hidden gem. I used to live a 5 minute walk away from the place, and it is a really nice one. When you see it from the outside, you think "Meh, another indian I could get sick from" and you couldn't be more wrong. Push the door, you will enter a place from another world: every thing is packed and wooden, there are about 20 spots (so you better book in advance because it is always packed). Usually the waiters welcome you with a free appetizer and Kir and are all very nice. The food is something else entirely, you can find about anything from a Dal Paleek a the traditional Devells, and every thing comes in great quantity and tastes amazing (a devell with rice is somewhere around 11€ and really I mean REALLY worth it), and with a cheese naan I swear you won't be able to eat much more. The only thing they are not amazing at is desserts. But who cares when you get great food at a great price? read more

The food had clearly been blanded-out for French taste, and the waiter seemed happy that we, as Americans, would appreciate normal-spicy food. And we did, oh heavens yes. Rich sauces (it is in France, after all) and fresh ingredients. The only disappointment was the dal soup as it was uninteresting (see French and spiciness above). We happened to walk in late one night after touring Paris without reservations, we sat for maybe 35-40 min we were starving and tempted to leave based off the wait, this location is so tiny I understand why they do reservations which I didn't know they were very kind and told us we would have to wait for an available table we even decided to take food to go but by the time we decided on what to do a table became available, their menu has great variety and they offer the spice level for your comfort of food, I'm glad we stayed this was truly one of my fav Indian restaurants I've been too personally I can't speak for others so I won't. We ordered Masala, and rice, nan and the fried fish appetizer every thing was phenomenal from the staff to the food and despite being so small of a restaurant the decor made me feel as tho I was in India so I hope you try it. The reason why I love Indian food... Love this place. Very friendly staff and the food is nothing short of awesome. They also speak very good English, which was a nice help for me. I had chicken tikka masala and they even added a little extra kick for me so I could satisfy my spicy craving. The garlic naan is also delicious. I've had lamb and vegetarian dishes here on a previous visit and they were both great too. If you're looking for a quick bite and dig Indian food definitely hit this place. murgh tikka masala not on the menu, but they will make it for you... It was outstanding. The perfect balance of spice and the chicken tikka used in it has a wonderful light smokey flavor. Waitstaff was nice and courteous, spoke English, and temperature in the restaurant was comfortable. read more

My Indian-origin wife and I make it a habit of trying an Indian restaurant in every country we travel to, if there is one. We selected Maharaja for our French journey and loved the experience. This was simply the best Indian food we have ever eaten. It was also one of the best meals we had during our 12 day trip to France.

The restaurant was nearly empty but despite that we had to wait 15 minutes to order and 20 minute to start seeing the beginning of the meal, the rest came 30 minutes later(way too late). The food was fine but the experience overall very disappointing, definitely not worth more than 2 stars because of the very poor service. read more

Perfect. It can be so difficult to find truly great Indian food, so save yourself some time and come to Maharaja. After several failed attempts at other restaurants in the neighborhood I was delighted at the quality of food and overall experience. The Chicken Tikka Masala had the perfect mix of spices and was absolutely delicious. The menu is very comprehensive and has options for everyone. The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly. I will be back as many times as I can before leaving Paris. Great food and service, very reasonable prices. We had the raita with salad, paneer tikka (appetizer), veg korma, spinach dal, and their specialty rice. Also delicious chai! Everything was flavorful with a touch of heat. The korma was especially good, although it was hard to pick a favorite. And the whole feast came out to less than 20€/person. Great place. Note there are two locations and this is supposed to be corrected in a month so make sure you know where you are going. On vacation in Paris staying in the Batignolles sector found this little gem close to our hotel. Opened for dinner at 7pm on a Tuesday and just a few blocks away from our hotel my husband and I enjoyed some tasty Indian food. I don't eat meat so of course I had to have the vegetable samosas which were tasty and not too salty or greasy. My husband ordered the fried chicken as a starter he says it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with a tandoori flavor. For the main course I had the dal makkini with basmati rice. Since I barely left any crumbs I have to admit it was quite tasty. Again I applaud the chef for not over doing it on the salt. Hubby ordered beef masala and he says it was not salty but tasty and had right amount of spice for masala dish. Garlic naan was also very good not stale or lacking flavor. The decor of the small establishment was quaint and fitting for an Indian restaurant. Indian music was perfect volume and dim lighting sets the mood for a lovely dinner. Our server was a delightful Tibetan gentleman who was very attentive to us and friendly. It was nice to see both tourists and locals enjoying this nice little place. If ever we come back to Paris we will definitely visit again. read more

My husband and I first ate at Maharaja on a trip to Paris two years ago. We enjoyed it so much we went out of our way to eat there again tonight, and we are so glad we did! The food is delicious, the atmosphere is cosy and perfect for a date night, and the owner friendly and welcoming. Having been to Sri Lanka in the couple years since our last visit, it was nice to be able to find somewhere to get a taste of that country's cuisine again.
