This experience is well off the beaten track. The French Basque area is beautiful beyond words. You'll be traveling through charming villages with rivers running thru and always a cafe or 2 or 3. Cheese creameries abound as are little vineyards with local inexpensive wine. We took the Basque Gateau "course" although described as 100% in French- the head chef speaks English and took great care of his. We learned his family's version of the Basque classic dessert. Less than 2 KMs away is a to die for family restaurant set in the woods. I'll review it as well. I was pretty perplexed by the average rating as this was one of the highest points of our trip. Fantastic people make for a fantastic experience. Warm Inviting Humorous and Fun. Cannot say enough about it read more

We were on our way to Sare today and saw a sign for a museum of Basque cakes. Wait, WHAT? A cake museum? In France? Tires screeching, we immediately turned around to go. From the parking lot, we descended down a pretty steep hill and happened upon a large group about to start the tour. We quickly got tickets and joined them in the house--the visit is only in French, so time to bust out the middle school language skills and follow along. The whole thing is rustic. You learn a little history about French Basque, how to make cakes (demo included), old instruments and ingredients, and you get a couple samples. The grounds are beautiful, but the experience itself is not worth 8.50 euros. Our guide was as French as French could be, but he also seemed to be ad-hocing at times and the tour ended quite abruptly. Not exactly our expectation of what a cake museum should be, but a pleasant surprise of a stop on our journey all the same. Apparently they have cake baking classes there, so that might be more worth it. read more
