Our favorite restaurant in Verbier so far! An incredibly intimate and cozy ambiance that simulates…read moreyour grandmother's home, a roaring fireplace is smack in the middle, providing warmth and a crackling spectacle. The fire is also functional to the food, but we'll get to that shortly.
This restaurant only takes reservations at two seatings, 7PM and 9PM. I'd recommend booking at 7PM and coming slightly earlier to enjoy the entire space to yourself and then experience the tables and air around you fill with chatter and conversation after a great day on the slopes.
You'll also be able to have a personal session with the restaurant's Bernese Mountain Dog! She's a friendly giant, who although isn't allowed in the dining area, often sneaks out from the kitchen.
On to the food, an incredible assortment of regional cuisine that's best shared with the party. For starters, we ordered the onion soup, a hearty broth that's warms your soul after being in the snow, the escargot, can't go wrong drenched in butter and herbs, as well as the rabbit terrine, which was excellent.
For our mains, we had a pair of truffle fondues and raclettes. You may be thinking of the viral raclette pasta sensation, but this is much more traditional and portioned. Remember the fireplace I was speaking of? A couple raclette wheels are left to melt by the fire, and when they're ready, you'll be cut a slice of gooey cheese to enjoy with the bread, charcuterie board and potatoes. Whenever you run out, you'll be brought another slice of fresh melted raclette!
Finally, I got the pot roast, a Dutch oven of braised and stewed beef with potatoes, carrots and bone marrow. The beef was tender beyond belief, and the broth carried a complex and hearty flavor. Additionally, it included some mustard and horseradish as garnish which paired very well with the beef and stew.
The charcuterie boards themselves were excellent, both with the truffle fondue and raclette and they even let us bring home the extras we couldn't finish, vacuum sealed for freshness! The wine my party ordered were excellent and we were definitely having a good time with the meal!
Great service, homely atmosphere, and hearty and excellent food. La Sonalon sits on top of Verbier and also provides a stunning view of the sleepy village at night. Definitely take a car or cab up here if you can! I actually don't think it's possible to walk up here, especially after skiing all day. Will definitely look forward to coming back here!
