I decided on Hemelhuys, a little gem tucked away on a pedestrian street, a stone-throw away from Hasselt's serene cathedral, St. Quintinus, and close to the town's fancy stores and great restaurants. This quaint, welcoming boutique hotel has eight spacious rooms combining modern-day comfort with old-fashioned charm. These tastefully renovated units are spread over two old stone houses connected by a small but lush garden. The short walk through this pretty garden is aptly names Chemin du Bonheur. Both owners, Ann and Liesbeth, blend discreet elegance with genuine small-town warmth, and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. And, just like the owners, the young staff is very attentive to the guests' needs and, in addition, smiles a lot -- a pleasant touch that augments one's enjoyment of the place. Breakfasts are most inviting: a selection of assorted fresh breads and bakery products, home-made jams, cheeses, fresh fruit and, for hungrier people, a variety of egg dishes. Location + charm + service + comfort + caring owners + friendly staff = compelling combination to embrace Hemelhuys, a delightful hotel of superb taste in a town that prides itself on being Hoofdstad van de Smaak (Capital of Good Taste). I will have to lie but I'd guess they serve about 400 different beers, mostly all Belgian. So if you want to try out some Belgian beers or just want to get drunk, and you are in the neighborhood this is the place to go. (Delirium, Kwak, Karmeliet,.. being my personal favorite ones) On the down side, the service sometimes can be sloppy and you will have to wait longer than at most pubs. But all these different beers are well worth the wait!

There's a Dutch word "gezellig" which loosely translates to cozy, and it perfectly describes the interior and the vibe. The clientele is: local Flemish, and super-annoying Americans (present company excluded). And it's only open on Sundays. We got: * A Drie Fonteinen geuze that was my favorite of the lot * A Vanmol Vuur "Raw Ale" which my wife said was one of her favorites of all time * a vintage Boon Oude Geuze The owner has to go fetch every bottle from the cellar; his mother helps him at the bar. 100% Worth the hassle.

You can catch a bus in Brussels (if it stops for you) or catch an Uber. Getting home, the bus is likely your best option! Just make sure you stay in town for a Sunday, the only day this quaint spot is open. And get there early! There will likely be a bit of a line. The bar is run by a few generations of a family and they are SO friendly. They also take care of their locals in the midst of the craziness of the out-of-town visitors. You don't feel out of place while enjoying some of the best lambics you will ever find. We will always try and be in Brussels on a Sunday for every visit.

And having an ipa or triple is so special that almost all customers were requesting a gift wrap. Living in the Seattle area, I'm Spokies by hundreds of local breweries, each with 10 or more styles. I like a lager occasionally, but seeing a can of the Swiss national beer: feldschlossen embossed with "lager hell" seemed an apt description of the beer situation, as well as the style. Hopfen and malz has dozens of beers from around the world, including some from Germany. And about 6-8 on tap, with a happy hour during the week. I'm aware of craft beers in Berlin getting around the strict reinheinsgebot law by simply calling themselves something other than beer. Hoping more do so! And that we see more places like this.
