My partner and I stayed at Le Vieux Logis in November 2010. The hotel, situated in the small village of Tremolat, is quite picturesque in any season. The gardens are beautifully manicured, and the house itself is full of charm and character. The hotel staff was extremely accommodating, going so far as to move our room when we asked for something on the ground floor, and providing detailed advice and directions to the chateaus and caves nearby. They were eager to provide us with whatever we needed. The rooms themselves were pleasant and clean, but I'm inclined to say they were in need of some attention; the fabrics and wallpaper showed signs of age and wear. My review, however, centers on the two superb meals we had at Le Vieux Logis during our stay, which were both worthy of five stars, an accolade I do not give lightly. Our first meal was in the gourmet restaurant, a very intimate and comfortable space with wood chairs, white linens and warm wood paneling on the walls. We opted for the "Caprice Gourmande" menu, a menu selected by the chef featuring two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts per person (95 Euros each). While six courses would certainly have been plenty, there were several intermezzo options as well, including four unique preparations of foie gras, much to my partner's delight (including a foie gras lollipop). Each course, from the quail eggs to the mielle feuille, was exquisite. By the time the cheese course arrived, with wonderful local cheeses, we were absolutely full, but could not stop eating! After such an indulgent meal, we opted for the bistro across the street, Le Bistrot d'en Face, also owned and operated by the hotel, for dinner the following evening. While the meal at the gourmet restaurant was amazing, the meal at the bistro was perfection. We were the only patrons in the bistro, so the staff spared no expense to accommodate our tastes and wishes. There, I had the finest mushroom omelet I have ever consumed, paired with frites that were divine. My partner and I shared a crème brulee dessert that was magnificent. We stayed at this hotel the first night of a bicycle tour and as such had no idea what to expect. What an amazing place. Gorgeous location, top notch service, a wonderful restaurant where we enjoyed a 10 course gourmet meal. This was one of the highlights of our bike package. Would love to return. read more

I was really looking forward to a nice meal as a 2 nite guest there. I was really shocked by the behavior of the waiter. Short guy with salt/pepper hair. I was well dressed, no pre dinner drinks.Showered. Shaved.The whole 9 yards. Just one respectful American who has been vacationing in France since the 70's. So the waiter in the 1 star Michelin restaurant THROWS a menu at me like he was dealing cards and says in English very rudely, "What do you want!?" Incredible. I should have walked out right then and there but I was so shocked I tried to get through it. A very nice lady waitress saw the scene and took over and the meal went OK but I really didn't enjoy my meal. I wrote Michelin and received an apologetic email from the owner. I honestly have NO IDEA what this guy's problem was but can only suggest he find another line of work. He lived up to all the negative images about the inferiority complex of the French after the national shame of the capitulation of WW2. If this happens to you in any restaurant anywhere, just walk out. Vote with your wallet. read more

Our four-hour, six-course lunch with wine pairings was the highlight of my entire trip to France with a group of 10 people. Every single detail was perfect - the atmosphere, the service, the food, the wine. I am a vegetarian and feared the worst, but the chef seemed to actually enjoy the challenge of making a meat-heavy menu work for a vegetarian. The rest of the gang was just as pleased. We started with champagne and amuse bouche in the beautiful garden, and ended with a cheese course at the end that was a true highlight, with dozens of local and regional cheeses offered by an expert who can describe every one of them. The wine pairings were perfection, and every bite of every course was memorable. I will go back to France just to eat here again. read more

Restaurant Gastronomique's food is AMAZING, a real treat for all the senses, a work of art, visually and flavor-wise. We really wanted to give it the 5 it should deserve, and for most people, it will be a 5. We were seated next to the kitchen door, and in front of their prep area, so we got a show with our meal, one we would rather have avoided. Sometimes, it's best not to peek behind the curtain. For us, it added a level of stress to hear the shouts from the kitchen, and watch the set-up of the servings. A bigger problem for us was that we had emailed them about our allergies, got confirmation when we arrived (very professional), but the maître d' twice saw plates that were served to us, which he ordered to have taken away because they contained our allergens, so while having him to thank (possibly with our lives), communications should have been better for this level.
