New Lanark is a village designed by Robert Owen, an industrial revolutionary who wanted to give his workers a safe place to live and work and to halt the exploitation of children. He ran mills which have now been converted into an interactive museum, a visitor centre and a hotel. We booked the hotel for our wedding reception (we had the meal in the function room in the hotel then moved over to the Institute in the Vistor Centre for the ceilidh as there was more room). Had a few worries because there is a noise limiter in the hotel function room and there was the possibilty that one may be installed in the Institute room and our band wouldnt play if there was one , but that didnt come to anything. They also cocked up some of the room bookings for our guests who were staying, but all of the staff were extremely apologetic and gave us room upgrades and smoothed everything out. On they day though, they were excellent. I can totally recommend Lee, who made the day run like clockwork and also Helen at the Institute for being so accommodating and for putting on a fab spread for our evening guests! The food was very good, much better than I expected from a hotel wedding with 120 odd guests having a sit down meal (it should have been good given the price, but I often think that wedding food in that kind of venue can be mediocre at best!) The wedding packages as always were quite expenisve so we just paid per head for the meal. We transported some of our flowers from the church windows to use as centrepieces for the tables, we had our own piper, we didnt bother with different coloured linen, we brought our own wine and paid corkage (bought from the Wine Society), so we managed to save a bit on the package which had stuff in it we didnt need or want. I must say though that they were really flexible with substituing and negociating the packages, so if you had your own piper you could swap to include canapes or something of similar "value". We just had too many things ourselved to warrent the package and to warrent the substitutions. Wonderful day - ran like clockwork (though I did end up being a little late!) but thoroughly recommend NLM

There is usually enough staff on to help you find what your looking for. There is a foreign exchange department at the rear but check the rates as they are not always the best and any that are shown in the window tend to have a minimum spend. The windows have up to date holidays with what they class as a good deal to try and get you into the store. The prices are reasonable but I would always check and shop around first.

The rooms are adequate to large in size, with good-sized en-suite bathrooms (shower or shower/bath). Decor is kept in good order and cleanliness is good. Adam oversees the kitchen, with a focus on locally-produced food resulting in excellent hearty breakfasts (featuring full Scottish, kedgeree, kippers, smoked haddock and toast from bread made on the premises) and high-quality evening meals (very good seasonal game and fish) served either informally in the bar or in the restaurant, both with fires in the colder months. The wine list is well-chosen, with something to appeal to almost every pocket and palate. Among the many things that make the Trigony unique are the home-baked shortbreads in the rooms, the artisanally-made toiletries and the views of red squirrels in the garden. It hard work being a bridesmaid and getting dragged to luxury castle spas *sigh*. As much as there is nothing wrong with Stobo Castle I don't really see what all the fuss is about either. It has to be Scotland's most famous spa but I personally believe there are much better ones out there. I prefer a little hidden gem to Stobo which is advertised on the TV and full of tourists. In saying that though if you do decide to visit Stobo I don't think you necessarily be disappointed. A previous reviewer mentioned that the modern spa extension which has been attached onto the side of the castle blends seamlessly but personally I have to disagree. I think nothing is more magical than a Scottish castle and this ugly big thing on the side spoils the illusion for me. The castle is hidden amongst the beautiful Scottish borders countryside and as you drive up to the castle the place just oozes idyllic calm: that is until you see the huge big extension on the side which looks like a public swimming pool. The rooms you can stay in are ok, a little bit beige and bland. I would describe them as comfortable as opposed to luxurious. The spa treatments on offer are ok. There is nothing particularly out of the ordinary but all the usual suspects are there. However I was expecting a bit more from Scotland's most famous spa. I found the interior to be a little bit like a very expensive and posh mental hospital and the fact that everyone was wandering around looking disturbingly calm in dressing gowns only added to this image. The facilities were decent and the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. I definitely felt more chilled out after our weekend at Stobo but I have to be honest and say a little bit disappointed that the real thing didn't live up to my grand expectations.

Lost a bit of its sparkle…read more Can't believe I am not raving about my Stobo Castle experiences as I did in my previous visit unfortunately this time I can't, this was my second visit and my daughters fourth and both of us discussed there are some issues . We initially booked to stay in castle rooms which are located just a short walk away from the main castle, on arrival at our designated room we were shocked at the standard of the room it was no more than premier inn room. We called reception and asked to me moved to main castle, we paid an upgrade price of £10 each, however we feel let down by reception staff as they didn't ask at any point why we wanted to move rooms, therefore we didn't have an opportunity to give them our thoughts. Room changed, we quickly unpacked and headed to the spa area, this as usual was superb, facilities exactly the same as previous visits, one small point is that it was quite untidy and there were no staff around to clean up Dinner is between 6&8pm we decided not to join other guests but dined as a 2. Starters were okay, mains however were not great, extremely fatty lamb chops, oily gravy, a fennel side dish which was strange. We also noticed that other diners had different veg on their dishes surely all lamb plates should be served the same? When our plates where being cleared we were asked how the food was we politely gave our views only to be told lamb by it's nature is a fatty meat, we are well aware that lamb is fatty but there are methods to stop this being served to guests! Breakfast was ok next morning but we felt that all the cooked items had been in an oven for a wee bit too long Lunch in departure day was nice, we opted for cold buffet we were surprised to see fatty lamb chops being served again only this time they were cold New addition of the cocktail bar is great Not sure what has changed but it most definitely wasn't as good as our previous visits and at around £300 per night for 2 it's not the cheapest

My husband and I really love hiking (especially walking up mountains or ridge walks...) and I have never visited the Alps before, so we wanted to spend a week exploring the stunning scenery in the Italian Dolomites. However I didn't really know where to start with researching routes, booking hotels etc. Also we didn't really want to camp on our honeymoon - we like relaxing in nice hotels, eating delicious food and drinking good wine. Lastly I didn't relish the idea of carrying all our luggage with us as we walked between locations. Inntravel saved me. They offer really fun sounding self-guided walking holidays (or cycling/driving/other holidays) so we told them the area we wanted to walk, and then they found us hotels, suggested walking routes, sent us all the maps and information we needed and then booked all our hotels, transfers etc. They even arrange luggage transfers so we could set off from one hotel, climb a mountain, climb down into a new valley and find our bags checked in to our next hotel before us! They have several suggestions for possible hikes each day, depending on how strong your legs are feeling. We tried some of the "hard" routes, and although we're not particularly fit, they were amaaaazing (and totally doable, even if it was exhausting.) As the walks are self-guided, we could go at our own speed, take thousands of photos and have a giggle without feeling like we were slowing anyone down. The cost was slightly more expensive than if I have found and booked everything myself, but it wasn't bad value (starts from £730pp for 7 nights) I think this was one of the best weeks of my life (aaaand we both lost weight, despite all the huge portions of gorgeous food) so I couldn't recommend Inntravel more.
