Nicely curated selection with prices comparable to other small plant stores. The Long Version: Fringe & Foliage is hidden in plain sight. It's in a little low-rise building across from Westgate Shopping Mall. It's on Carling Ave, which is a main street, and I've driven by it many times without even noticing it. It's sandwiched between a bridal shop and a martial arts school. The name Fringe & Foliage is not immediately visible, the description is more prominent from the street. I actually thought the store was called "Hair Salon & Plant Store" because that's what's on the sign you can see from the street, lol. I popped in one day to check out their plant selection. The plant store area is spacious and open but doesn't have that many plants. However, their selection is well curated and they have only one or two of each type of plant. The plants seem to be well cared for too. I came in specifically looking for a Pleiospilos nelli (aka Split Rock plant), the Royal Flush variety which has a purplish hue to it, which they didn't have. They did have Lithops (aka Living Stones) though, but I already have Lithops. I still enjoyed looking around the store. I was told that the owners go to Montreal to pick up new plants and post it on their Instagram when they do. So I'll be keeping an eye on their IG. They also sell cute little knickknacks, like crocheted plants, enamel pins and stickers of street signs of streets in the neighbourhood. It's a cute store. And staff were pleasant. They also sell their plants online and their website is up-to-date with their current inventory, so if it's not online, they don't have it. This is unlike some other stores where they don't post everything they have in-store, so you might find items in-store that are not posted online. The store is hidden in an industrial park, so you have to go looking for it. Unlikely that you would just drive by and see it. I recently got into plants so I was poking around Google Maps looking for plant stores and found this store that way. They have a good variety of plants and I like how they group plants that can tolerate low light and they indicate which plants are non-toxic to pets. Their plants are all in relatively good shape in contrast with plants at big box stores which sometimes are in poor condition. Their plants are more expensive than big box stores and large greenhouses like Robert Plante Greenhouses, which is to be expected. For example, they had Fenestraria Rhopalophylla (Baby Toes succulents) for $16.99 whereas they are $12.99 at Robert Plante and between $4.99-$9.99 at big box stores. However, I would say their prices are comparable with other small plant stores in the city. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Free parking available in the strip mall parking lot. Review #80 (2025)

The Long Version: Given the name of the store, I expected more strange and unusual plants, but I had actually taken a look at their website before coming in, so I knew they didn't have Conophytums or other exotic Mesembs, but I still wanted to stop by to take a look. They may have had some unusual non-succulents, but I'm not particularly familiar nor interested in those types of plants, lol. The store is nicely arranged and staff were pleasant. They welcomed me as I entered and let me know they were available if I needed anything, but I was left to browse on my own, which I prefer anyway. I enjoyed looking around. They had several Curly Bonnie Spider Plants, and I admired how they were so compact and curly, while mine at home is a bit unruly with some straight leaves poking out, lol. They had some pretty pots, but they were a bit pricey for my budget ($14 for a small 2.5 inch pot). Plants looked well cared for. Street parking only. Review #119 (2025)

I wanted a cute plant with the pot .. and realized the pots are hand made and ceramic. It's a small local shop in Ottawa and it was super fabulous. The service was alright.. not very welcoming at first and they were pretty annoyed to see a customer and took a while to get help. The actual pot is a lil pricey but the plants are decently priced. The pot was like 42$ and plants varried between 5-13$ I got the Pink lady / callisia it was so beautiful and fell in love with it. Had to get it .. overall it a beautiful place but maybe get your pots / ceramics somewhere else as they're quite expensive !!

Every plant I've gotten at Scrim's has been beautiful and done really well. I wouldn't really say I have a green thumb, nor am I death to all houseplants--and the staff at Scrim's has always been really knowledgeable and helped me choose plants that are not toxic for my plant-chewing cat and that are pretty easy for me to care for (and therefore won't die on me). The plants have always been healthy and survived the move from the flower shop to my apartment--I have one plant that has doubled in height and is just doing beautifully. I've picked up housewarming gifts here as well, the staff are always really prompt and happy to help. Gold stars all around. Also, they do a great job wrapping up the plants for you. I picked one up in winter one time and she wrapped it a few layers to protect it from the wind and put a cute little ribbon and sticker on it--simple and pretty.

If you are familiar with the brand, Princess Auto sells all kinds of car maintenance products, and shelving and other items to outfit your garage to do the repairs and maintenance required. They have things to fix your car: wheels and tires (after all, it's winter now... are your snow tires on?); doodads to check the pressure of your tires; trailer hitches; and all and sundry for the DIY car enthusiast. So why do *I* like it when I don't know the right side of a wrench? Because they are Canadian owned and operated, and they sell work gloves and those heating things to keep your hands and feet warm in the winter. I go there maybe every 3-4 months to check out what is on display. It's different than a hardware store, but also good and useful.
