I was expecting 1hr wait for the line on the thanksgiving morning but appealingly I waited almost 2 hours because ppl buys 10 to 5 pies a person so it is not enough pies even though they are making more and more.. Lee's Bakery & Kitchen Have you ever been to a bakery that sells out of everything in the case? I have not until I came here to Hawaii. I am amazed that this bakery doesn't learn that they can sell out everything that they bake and have a handful of extra customers everyday. Many people truly enjoy the famous custard pies. They are the best in the islands. I know that it may not seem like the most wonderful pie if you are form somewhere like NY or LA but these pies are the bomb here in HI. An older boss wanted a set of pies for a lunchen for a work event around Halloween- he sent his secretary to to Lee's. She came back with only half pumpkin half custard. He was so upset- he was a grouch all day long and kept making comments that he would have been happier if he had had his custard pie. Granted it is just a pie- but obviously not to him. He then sent her first thing in the morning the week of Thanksgiving- which is really advisable to get the pies just as the store opens as - day of Thanksgiving- I have driven by and seen a line for the pies all the way down by the river (no not really that long but heckalong round the block long). Thanksgiving/ Christmas are the busiest and everyone wants to get in line for just 1 pie. Crazy------. If I was in a line that long I'd have to get 100- otherwise- forget it. I will always just go when it is an ok time to go- early morning and not on a holiday. What is early? Between 7 am and 8 am. 3 pm, 4pm or 5 pm- they basically only have pre-packaged cookies and a few donuts (the Americanized kind - not the good ones) in store. There are other pastries- some on the Asian side- some Americanized. If you need a certain kind, ask for it by name. Have someone write it down for you because - remember you are in Chinatown- you may think that you are clear but you may not be getting what item it is that you wanted if you don't write it down. There are the easy to understand, ham and egg and cheese in the donut roll looking thing- and you will be right, there is the hotdog in a donut looking roll, enjoy- if there is a specific item you really are dieing for- ask but write it down. Just my suggestion. Overall- it is really fresh - same day good bakery- light flakey and the way you can't get at home. Service is quick - in and out and that is the way you want it to get in and out. I like the pies btw. The pumpkin half custard half is what I prefer but everyone else loves just the custard. Go Nuts- have both and tell me what you think. read more

The pies are AMAZING. Today I experienced a GRUMPY LADY at the counter at me. YES...I know its a Chinese bakery and we shouldn't be expecting first class service....but I was very nice to her. How to sum up Lee's in one word? Onolicious! We stopped by the bakery after some morning dim sum and couldn't resist the goodies that were on display. Coconut chiffon cake that was light as air and yet incredibly moist...absolutely delicious and only $6 for the large and $4 for the small (think a large size angel food cake) there was plenty to share! I preordered my pies for pick-up (today) the Tuesday before thanksgiving only to show up to a line down the street! Unfortunately this line isn't for individuals who failed to preorder their pies, it's apparently for people who did (and I'm guessing people who are just walking in and ordering as well!)! People have been waiting for almost two hours! What's the point of pre-ordering (in an attempt to avoid the Thanksgiving madness) to only have to wait in line anyway?! Absolutely horrifying. Was in the area and decided to buy some pastries for lunch. Ended up with two turkey & cheese, and one with coconut filling The price was about $1.35 each but it is definitely NOT worth it. The turkey rolls were large, but it was just bread. The filling was about 1 inch by 2 inches. Might as well just buy bread instead. What a rip off. The one with coconut filling was a tiny excuse of a pastry. Literally. It was tiny. I absolutely love love love the pies here! My aunty brought a peach/pear once to a party and I fell in love. It tasted so fresh and not too sweet. It was beyond delectable. The only thing I've had here is the custard pie and it's the best custard pie I've ever had hands down! And it goes great with roselani haupia ice cream. The crust is flaky and the filling has the perfect sweetness and is nice and thick, nothing like those fake custard pies found at the major chain grocery stores. read more

My customer experience at this establishment was poor. I arrived about 8 am to buy some custard pies for a gathering I was planning to attend. I was told their custard pies were delicious.The custard pies were not ready when I was there at 8 am. I was told by the lady who works there to come back in 90 minutes. There isn't convenient parking for this location but decided to return about 90 minutes later based on their custard pie reputation. Upon arriving the same lady said, "not ready it will be another 30 minutes". There is no sorry expressed except for next time call before you come. Open 24+ hours thanksgiving eve 5am to 5pm the next day or when they run out. Pumpkin, custard, pumpkin custard, and peach pear. No orders. Must stand in line. Yes, worth it. No limit on how many you can buy. Can order uncooked pies EXCEPT pumpkin or custard. Family owned, hope they never go commercial. Perfect crust, perfect balance of tastes. They have awesome pastries too, like Hong Kong buns (sugar butter filled oblong bun) and butter rolls, but not for thanksgiving. Baker told me no time to bake buns, but can order the rolls. I wanted to like the egg custard pie more. I really did. I think it's a great pie, and I would love to get it again (and I will). I think it was just built up too much in my head from people telling me about it that I was bound to be disappointed. I really expected to have a jaw dropping experience. I will have to try again with a hotter pie (we let it sit for a while) and then I can update if the fresher version is better. I think perhaps I am too used to the egg custard tarts I have grown up eating, which when good, have the flakiest crust and the best egg custard. I understand that a pie can't be as flaky as a tart. I thought the egg custard was good (just eggy enough). The crust was good around the edges but in the middle was so-so. All in all a great pie (way better than most other kinds of fruit pies), but I think I will still stick to egg custard tarts instead of the pie given the choice. read more
