Posting late. I came for winterlicious but ended up ordering from the regular menu. I'm going to rate based on food and not decor or atmosphere. The atmosphere was really dark, minimal lighting. I could barely see the table next to me. It may be ideal for an intimate date? But it was loud so I don't know if a couple could have quality conversation. Being in awe, I forgot to take a picture of the Singaporean style slaw! It was GLORIOUS! Absolutely GLORIOUS! It has 20 ingredients and the server mixes it in front of you. Vegetarian cheeseburger spring roll? Yes. It was vegetarian. So crispy and flavourful. Cute twist on the Vietnamese and burger cuisine. Crispy green onion dumpling. Definitely crispy. I recall it being delicious. It's been months but the taste lingers in my thoughts. Buddha style lettuce cups. It was slightly salty for my taste and the lettuce pieces were too small to wrap. Wouldn't order it again to be honest. Warm molten chocolate cake. Great way to finish the meal. The cake was soft while the chocolate was oozing out. Came for winterlicious. Sampled the regular menu. One of the worst nights I've had in my life. I'm a trans person visiting from the US. I was harassed repeatedly by staff and security and my partner was misgendered repeatedly by staff and security despite corrections. Door staff need ID retraining; they were convinced my ID was fake because it doesn't comply with what they were expecting to see. I'm from another country! I'm nearly 30 and do not look like a minor. It's extremely disconcerting to be told that you're not who you say you are. I ended up having to call the Toronto police to get items that staff had stolen from me returned. I do not recommend this venue to anyone, performer or attendee. What a nightmare read more

after 12 years of concert going in the GTA, I have finally come to lee's palace and man it was a bit of a let down. not a huge fan of how dark everything is on the inside, the layout is super weird especially for mosh pits as you get trapped in the pit via the layout. the staff here are not the most patient bunch either, and that's from the standpoint of the first people I dealt with which was security, the ticket people and the bartender. not a huge fan of the bathroom being on the upper floor either. the sound is absolutely great though, this much I can say, and the band that I was seeing absolutely knocked it out of the park. they need to do something with the lighting though as im not a fan of dark concerts. I'm still trying to figure out how they would do a wrestling event, I just attended a sold out concert and it was elbow to elbow room only. and this is the first time that I am saying this on yelp. YES this establishment has a gender neutral washroom!(upstairs) parking options are the street if you can find it, and some lots in the area. transit options are the bloor subway line @ Bathurst station, the 511 Bathurst streetcar or the 7 Bathurst bus, all options with a 3-5 minute walk. read more

I've been walking past Lee's Palace for almost 7 years and not once did I ever actually think to look up what bands played here or what events actually took place. Tonight I ended up coming here for Vampiro's Underground Invasion which was put on by Smash Wrestling and Lucha T.O. and also featured the local Toronto band Midnight Towers. My review of Lee's Palace is generally based on the building as a wrestling venue but also the building itself. The band played on the stage and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the sound was in the place. The venue itself offers a full bar and even has a window that allows you to order tacos from the place next door! The show itself was phenomenal and I loved the setup. Overall I was a big fan of Lee's Palace and my girlfriend also agreed that we should look at the upcoming schedule and come back. Great place to see music or wrestling! read more

BOTTOM LINE: A poorly designed and (still very) smelly music space. Although rich in history and a staple of the Toronto music scene, I always dread going to Lee's. But first, the good. I actually really enjoy the main stage on the first floor with elevated benches on the side (get there early to nab these!) and tiered platforms so you'll probably be able to find an unobstructed view of the stage. The drinks are also reasonably priced. There's also the dance cave on the second floor. The (newly) commissioned mural on the facade is also iconic. There is something to be said, however, about milking nostalgia just a bit too much. One of the things that really turns me off is that in the 10 years I've been attending, they still take the prize for one of the smelliest washrooms in town only worsened by the fact the the doors are always propped open. Also, the race to and from the coat check is never fun but at Lee's it involves snaking up 3 FLOORS of narrow, sticky stairs to the attic... BRUTES! Perhaps I'm being too critical but I feel that these are actually things that can be addressed, but just haven't. At the end of the day, you probably won't be able to avoid Lee's, but try to dress light and don't forget to bring your iron bladder. read more

I made a big deal about going to Lee's when I first traveled to Toronto. I looked up how to get there on the TTC and headed to Bathhurst to see the band Camera Obscura. The venue is known for its live musical acts, mostly indie rock/alternative/etc., and also a dance club (or rather cave). Regarding the performance hall, it's a smaller space, so you get a more intimate show. Where I stand often depends on the act and how much I can deal with people invading my personal space on a given night. At Lee's Palace, you can get closer to the stage or hang back. I'm more of a hang back concert-goer and you can do that here without missing too much from the musical act -with good sound and a decent view. It's a cool rock club (gritty in a good way) and I wished there was something like it near where I lived. However, a lot of what makes it that way are the people in the neighborhood and the culture of the area, which you can't cookie-cutter replicate. So I really recommend checking out Lee's if you are in the city of Toronto. It's tons of fun. read more

Lee's Palace is a hole....but it's a hole filled with history (and therefore, not empty at all). Many a great band has graced the stage there, from the Tragically Hip and Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1986, to Blur in 1991, to Elliott Smith, to Sean Lennon, to Hayden, to Queens of the Stone Age...the list is seriously impressive and endless. It is one of the places to see bands just before they get big and then come back to Toronto a year later and you have to watch them from way back in the nosebleed seats of the Dome. This is such an amazing venue in Toronto! I have only been to one show here, but now I will absolutely seek out events here to travel from Buffalo to attend. The outside of the venue alone is stand-out amazing and makes you want to go in. Despite the door staff being terrible, the rest of my experience was great. The bartenders were delightful, the beers were tall, and the sound was great. I like that there were options to find seats around the venue, and then to be able to head down to the floor to dance was awesome, too. I saw a sign for a "Dance Cave"?! That alone is enough to get me back in the door. I also want to point out that there are gender neutral bathroom options available to those needing that type of accommodation, which is great. read more

This is one of my favorite venues in the city to see a band. It is intimate. Some of the best acts in the indie scene come to this venue. I've seen some very memorable acts here including: Breeders, Red House Painters, Stephin Merritt, Kings of Convenience (who kept complaining about the acoustics and were very disturbed by the cash registered in the back, for a good reason), Mark Eitzel (who was very peeved with the crowd, for some reason, and refused to come back for an encore), The Album Leaf and others. Lee's Palace is one of Toronto's landmarks known around the world as a venue where cult to medium size shows are hosted. Just like any other well run business, Lee's has not changed a thing. The formula is right. They have plenty of room to stand back and watch a show at a distance, or get right into the mosh pit. There is also room to hang around the sides, allowing to you to see the show close up yet avoiding the pit, albeit with your view from an angle. Helping to add to the buzz and atmosphere of this vibrant college-feel Bloor St. location is the Dance Cave upstairs. It attracts the DJ fans on a budget. Once I found Lee's website, I checked out their "Best Of" band list (http://www.leespalace.com/best.html) of the acts that have graced the stage. The list starts at 1985 and stops mid-1999, I'm guessing out of sheer exhaustion. There's been a lot of great acts that have blessed that stage and that's one of the key things that makes this place a great concert venue. One of the smaller venues in the city, it's got a great stage, large dance floor in front of it, and a very active bar. Because of the size, you get great sound in the place and sound easily fills the room. There's a seediness to it that can make most to any act that takes the stage look just a little bit bad ass. Might be the mural on the outer wall. There's been a bit of reno since, meaning they moved the bar to the back of the room and provided bands with a dedicated area to sell merch, but that's about all that's changed. It's still dark, dank, smells a little bit, but it's the place that in 1994 had the likes of the Hanson Brothers, Collective Soul, and Oasis perform there. You tell the Gallagher brothers they're wrong about the place. read more

I love Lee`s Palace. Its one of the best places in the city to see a band. Its grungy and outdated but that also makes it intimate and totally unpretentious. I`ve recently seen Saint Motel and Rich Aucoin here and, in both instances, it is like a private concert. For whatever reason, I find the people to be some of the nicest, most considerate concert goers of any venue I have been to. People make space, apologize when they bump into you and are all there to have fun. Even on their Halloween party this held. Upstairs is the Dance Cave, which is also a lot of fun but very young. I spent a lot of time here back in my UofT days but definitely feel too old for the crowd upstairs now. read more

My favourite music venue in the city. Hands down. Love it. It's all in the layout and set up. There's a pit to dance in and standing room, all of this surrounded by seats at the edge in a square like formation. All with decent sight-lines. I love having these options. Seating you can see from! Amazing! A lowered dancing pit! The best! Basic stuff that should be at every venue. I really dig it, and it enhances my live music viewing experience. I've seen some of my favourtie shows here. And even the random ones have been good. If that makes any sense... On April 1st my friend & I attended the One Direction dance party happening. When we arrived around 10pm the guard out front asked to see ID. My friend got let in but I didn't. I removed my mask and hood but the guy kept looking at my ID not believing that I was the same person. They gave me a hard time and refused to let me in. I don't think it surprises too many people that I don't frequent Lee's Palace, but for a music venue this actually does a pretty good job. There's a large area for crowds to gather before the stage and even outside of that area the location is very spacey and could accommodate a good many people. It's not the cleanest place that one could visit but the dirty run down look really works here. Beer is cheap although there's no real variety and you can find your basic bar drinks here as well. Lee's Palace fits in to this neighborhood perfectly doing the whole band space thing well and for a good price, I'm not that in to the band scene to really comment on the talent of bands that frequent here though. The stage is high, the drinks are cheap and pick the right night and you could have yourself a good time here. read more

If I were 15 and thought it was rockin to go to a place with other 15 year olds trying to pass as 19 year olds than yes. I can't even compliment it and say it is grunge. I think that the description of the facilities are fairly well captured in other reviews, in particular Kat F.'s review. One thing I would add is that the sight lines are pretty good from almost everywhere because the stage is really high. This is really useful if you are, or will be attending a concert with, a shorter person. You lose all of the benefit of the tall stage if you stay on the top or second level though, so if you're short try to get down to the pit. Lee's is not trying to be something it's not nor not as cool as it thinks it is (to the extent a building has an ego). I know others have eluded to it, but Nirvana, Oasis, the Smashing Pumpkins and others all played here before they were big, so give it some respect as the musical icon it is. The Dance Cave (upstairs) can be a fun and easy thing to do after a a couple of hours of live music. But know that the average age of a Dance Cave enthusiast is about 20.5 so you'll likely feel like you are back at a campus nightclub, which can be fun if you're in the right mood. read more

Lee's is far and away the worst music venue I've ever been too and that's saying a lot from a person that grew up attending shows in church basements, fields and any other hole that could fit a band and forty kids in. The acoustics are terrible and it seems like the only good place to stand is centre stage in the very front. It's dark, dingy and just uninteresting visually. Having said that, yes I am aware of the number of bands that have played there and their pedigree. This is one of my favourite venues in the city to see a concert. It is a decent sized venue, seating along the walls and open space in the middle allows for pretty good sightlines. The sound quality is good but not amazing. This is an easy venue to get to as it is located right on the Bloor subway line. There is something about Toronto crowds; they are usually not the greatest. Us Torontonians in my experience tend to be quiet and unengaged at concerts and sporting events in general. However both concerts I have seen at Lee's Palace the crowds have been atypical of Toronto. The last time I was here the crowd was absolutely crazy and rowdy, so much so that the band playing mentioned that this was the rowdiest crowd they had seen all weekend, and were surprised at that since it was a Sunday (I was surprised since it was Toronto). Overall a great place to see a concert, generally good crowds, good sightlines and sound and a pretty intimate venue. Bonus for having a pretty decent beer selection as well! Definitely recommend seeing a show here. read more

My experience at Lee's Palace was exceptional! For starter's, if you're new to the city and love the music scene - this is the venue you need to be! It's small enough to hold a more intimate amount of fans, but large enough to host one heck-of-a show! The external design of Lee's Palace is eye-catching for all those passing by and will make you want to see what's inside. Once you're in, expect to see one of the best concerts you ever would! Everything from the workers and bartenders to the artists themselves, a-maz-ing! I highly recommend anyone who's passion is music to attend this venue. I went to a lot of shows here back when I was a teenager. This was before I moved to Toronto and I didn't know much about the city, so I used to think Lee's Palace was the centre of it all. I saw some pretty memorable shows that left a lasting impression on my youth. These days my musical tastes have changed since the mid-90s. Lee's Palace definitely caters towards the indie rock crowd so since I moved to the city (ten years ago) I have only been back to Lee's a handful of times. They've thankfully changed the layout and moved the bar to the very back of the club along the wall, eliminating a dead zone and creating much more space for concert goers. Even though I am only there about once-a-year, I've usually always had a good time at Lee's Palace and have seen many great shows. Plus it's a nice mid-sized venue right in the heart of the Annex, so you don't have to head out into the middle of nowhere to see quality headliners. read more

One of the best clubs in Toronto to catch live music. Really well located at Bathurst and Bloor. The renovated in the past few years and raising the stage vastly improved sightlines throughout the venue. Staff are generally quite tolerable, and the sound is usually good here. Bathrooms are a bit out of the way (upstairs) and kinda dirty, but as expected for a spot like this. I've been going to shows at Lee's for over 10 years now and I have so many good memories coming out of this place. As mentioned, the sound quality IS much better than it used to be. I remember seeing some shows in the early 2000's with just awful sound quality. Last 1-2 years it's noticeably much better. The general set up seems good in my opinion. The main pit area in front of the stage is perfect for people who want to dance, mosh or crowd surf. The rest of the standing area is raised, so you don't risk getting trampled by any nutters in the pit area. Drinks are served at the far back, but even the "far back" isn't too far away, you can still see the stage. I love the wall-seating around both sides of the room, you can actually see what's happening on stage (bonus for short people) It's a shame the bathrooms are so grungy, but when my fav band comes to town I can definitely deal with it. The famous exterior wall mural has been redone recently (same artist) and it looks amazing. read more

Ever walk down Bloor at Bathurst and see that building with the funky, colourful mural on it that is busy and tacky, and you are dying to go in? (This was me at 15) That, my friends is the legendary Lee's Palace. What can you go to Lee's Palace for? It could be a concert, a night of stand-up, or just a place to get some drinks and dance with friends...Lee's Palace is a good venue for all of these. It's layout is pretty functional: There's a large bar at the front, within a large standing area, and below is a sunken floor, with seating all around and table space for drinks. Whether you want to mingle around, cram yourself at the bar for multiple drinks, mosh in front the stage, or sit and take in the music, Lee's pretty much caters to anyone. I've been a number of times for music and went recently to see Jon Lajoie do his first stand up show in Toronto and it was the best comic-night I have ever been to. Whether that's because of the genius that is Mr. Lajoie himself, or the sound, light and stage hands of Lee's Palace, I can not defer. But, I think they go hand in hand, so to say Lee's Palace is a good place to see stand up is a definite understatement. It's fantastic! One thing I've always found confusing about Lee's is the washroom set up. They aren't labeled too clearly and funny stories aside, I've accidentally used the men's lavatory before. And yes, for some reason I didn't see the urinals till after I was finished....Just a word to the wise; the women's washroom is located a few more steps from the men's. I'm POSITIVE this will help someone... Acoustically, Lee's is a fantastic concert venue. The rhythm and bass can be felt energetically within this confined space; the music bounces off the walls and dives right in to you. If you don't like swassy crowds or loud, rambunctious music, you should pass on Lee's Palace. If you do, then this is the perfect place for you! read more

My first time here and it wasn't for a concert. It was for the Bedlam all-girls pillow fight. The event had around 150 people so there was tons of space to hang out and there was never a line at the bar. Actually, at the beginning of the night there was a line, but the bartender shouted at us (in a friendly manner) to not line up at the bar and to spread out across it so he could serve us more efficiently. The layout here is great. The stage is quite high up (a good 4-5 feet) so you can see what's going on no matter where you are in the place. There's a pit/dance floor area in front of the stage and surrounding that is a railing with some platforms to set your drinks on. For seating there are benches and tables around the outside of the space and they're raised. So if you're sitting down you're sitting above the crowd slightly creating a great vantage point. read more

A review of Lee's Palace is almost dependent on the show, almost. So, I'm going to try my best to separate the venue from the concert. As a venue, it's stereotypical right down to the... well, the grungy entrance way, graffiti covered bathroom stalls, dusty appearing floors, black interiors, hockey-rink-concession-type bar, linoleum dance floor, slightly parted backstage curtain. None of those stand out as reasons to go to Lee's Palace. It's certainly the concerts you go there to check out and when it comes to live acts in Toronto this is THE venue. Crowds are usually friendly, after all everyone's there with similar musical tastes. Frankly, I think I'd be thrown for a curve if I met someone who was there for the venue. read more

This place puts on great concerts. They have a great sound system and an excellent floor layout. With the pit area actually being a step down from the surrounding floor space, there's an easily visible delineation between people who want to get ruckused and people who don't. As someone who consistently flips flips back and forth, being able to satisfy my mood without any violent surprise is always appreciated. The other great thing about this venue is its size. It's not small like the Horse Shoe or Dee's, but it's not gigantic and ugly like the Kool Haus. It's in this nice middle ground that not many places in Toronto can claim (others include The Opera House and The Phoenix.) If venue plays a factor in your concert going decisions, Lee's Palace is a big plus. read more

Why haven't I gone to this place earlier?! Often times, I have walked past the bizarrely painted acid-trip that is the Palace's Mural thinking it was nothing more than a run down building with a tiny burrito place stuck in the middle of it. I never knew it was a concert venue until I went to see Local H and Helmet live. Call me crazy but despite how messy and grungy it looks, I really dig the atmosphere of Lee's Palace. The place is a total rathole, perfect for listening to Indie, Alternative Metal and Grunge bands play live. I also found the ticket prices to be incredibly affordable at $30 a pop so I'm definitely inclined to see more shows in the future should any good bands come around to play. Only thing I wish this place had more of are tables and chairs. I get that it's a relatively small place and while there is a good sized mosh area, the fact that once the seats are taken and all you have left is to stand is just a little pain-in-the-ass-y. Regardless, I look forward to coming again for sure! read more

Made my first trip to Lee's Palace in years this weekend, and I don't think the place has changed since the first time I stepped foot in the place. This place is a staple of the Annex, and Toronto's live music scene on the whole, so respect should be given for that. One thing I do like about the place is that the stage is raised, which creates good sight lines whether you want to be in the slightly lowered dancefloor up front or the other levels splitting the room between the stage and the bar. Sound is a good clarity and volume. Lighting admittedly rather low fidelity in comparison. Drinks at the bar are reasonably priced, but I find it weird that they have draught beer upstairs in Dance Cave but only bottles in Lee's Palace, Bathrooms are grimey, but that seems to be standard issue for most aged live music venues nowadays. At the end of the day, I'd really only go here for when specific artists and bands are playing, but it's a solid venue for live music. read more

Lee's Palace is a decent venue in the city. They've got an interesting exterior and a good interior -- the layout is basically music venue downstairs, and dance club upstairs (Dance Cave), with the washrooms in the middle. They usually have decent bands playing downstairs, and a fun time upstairs, but perhaps the two should have been reversed. If you're at a show downstairs, you will hear the bass thumping upstairs and you will SEE the floor shake. One day, I'm sure the ceiling will cave in. But besides that, it's a good place to go for a show, and a fun time if you want to dance. Beware the bouncers -- they are HUGE jerks and are prone to denying people entry on a whim. There's a good-sized pit in front of the stage for the more lively fans, as well as seating along the outside of the pit and along the outer walls. Even at sold out shows, the congestion isn't that bad along the bar, which is long and usually well-staffed. Wait times for drinks aren't as bad as I've endured at other venues. They also seem to be booking a wide variety of acts here lately. The sound is some of the best I've heard in the city--much better than The Phoenix, etc. And the newly re-painted exterior looks phenomenal. I came here last night for the Dance Gavin Dance concert. It's the first time I've ever been to such a small and intimate venue. I'll go over the things I didn't like about the place first. The washrooms doors for the men were always opened and it stinks really badly. However, the women's washroom had a lot of stalls for such a tiny place and everything inside was relatively clean. The audio quality was really disappointing to me as the vocals for most of the bands were drowned out and there were many songs where I couldn't hear what the vocalist was singing at all. Perhaps, this is an issue that could have been rectified during sound check. I really liked the layout of the venue because you have many options on where to stand and sit. It is easy to get a clear view of the raised stage besides some pillars blocking the view on the left side. I also really liked how there was a dedicated room for selling merch. The staff were very friendly. I don't drink so I can't comment on alcohol selection and prices. Overall, I would come back again but only for my favourite bands/musicians. read more

Lee's Palace has been around forever and ever. And it's hit or miss like any concert venue. The door men are snooty and the bartenders are cold and it's always been like that, you just deal. It's shaped like a big theatre with a sunken dance floor area in front of the stage. I saw Dallas Green perform there as City & Colour during NXNE way before he even put out an album and it was epic! And i also saw the Teenagers there and they were terrible. So many great memories have been had at this place, and so many mediocre ones too. As far as bookings go, they are usually a bit ahead of the curve when it comes to music.
