Bacon Jam Burger
Wayne L.

Great burger and the Mac & Cheese was to die for. It was walking distance from my hotel so it was ideal for a simple dinner. It was very busy with a good local vibe. The service was good but, I did eat at the bar. I'll definitely go back here when I visit Blacksburg.

Jerk Chicken Philly with onion rings- delicious!

Tasty! The chicken Philly and onion rings were pretty good. The service was good as well, Ben at the bar did a great job.

Menu (Aug 2024) - zoom in for details and prices - a packed menu with lots to offer...but based on our visit, left a lot to be desired :(

Sadly this place gets just a 3 stars from me. We tried and wanted to like this place. I'm sure it's a Bburg landmark that's been around for a while - at least it looks that way. I'd say the saving grace for this place imo is that it's a pretty casual place, kid friendly and great for large parties because of its size (in a standalone building) with a jam-packed menu (2 sided but with about 3,483 things on it), easy to access from Main St (not right smack dab downtown which is a plus actually), with plentiful parking availability. And I admit, not break-the-bank prices (see my menu pics). I know, I know - from my description above, what's wrong with this place - it sounds like a great place to go. Maybe you'll have better luck or a different opinion of this place than what we experienced... For the most part, the food was pretty disappointing and lackluster. Even for the price. Hence a grade of "C" - and honestly even that is being a bit generous. :( Party of 3 - we ordered the Steak and Cheese Sandwich, the Steak Salad and the Chicken Salad Sandwich. For choice of side for both sandos, we ordered the housemade potato chips which were probably the BEST thing we had. :/ The Steak Salad was a MAJOR FAIL - I scratch my head why they even brought it out to us like that. My companion ordered her steak MEDIUM RARE because she knows, 90% of the time, cooks have no clue how to properly cook a steak so she hedges and always orders on the rare side. It was clear when it was put right in front of her that the steak was cooked WELL DONE. Even a newb would know this. See my pic. (Note to those that STILL want to order the steak salad - call 'em on it.) Aside from the steak fail, the salad was nbd - a super basic house salad. The Steak and Cheese was probably the best of the 3 entrees we ordered - and that was just okay, no great shakes. The Chicken Salad Sandwich was MY meal - you have to know that I'm always iso a decent housemade chicken salad wherever I go. So I was excited to try it out. I would give their chix salad a mid-grade review and will say that they skimped big time on how much chicken salad they put in the sandwich (see my pic). Service left a lot to be desired. I'm going to say that we were waited on by either the Manager or the Owner. It wasn't busy when we went (and it was well before the start of the school year) so there was no reason someone (even if it wasn't him) couldn't stop over or even walk by regularly to check on us. He just disappeared for most of our meal. When we were ready for our check, we had to ask someone to find him. (We still gave a 20% tip.) Even if I give this place a mulligan on the service, I would still say our visit was a sub par experience. Disappointed that the food items were nothing special. And, honestly, for the money even with more reasonable menu prices, it's clear (imo) that they're cutting corners in other ways while they can say their prices have stayed constant. So - you're paying for it one way or another. Lefty's will probably continue to do just fine because there aren't many local, reasonably priced places in Bburg which is unfortunate. And since the student community is so transient (turning over every 4 years), new crops of students and their families will roll in every year so that will continue to keep a place like this going. A clever model for a mediocre restaurant to stay in business with...without really even having to improve on being mediocre.

Tomato bisque Soup with blue cheese and a half baked ham sandwich . what a deal

Food was so fresh and well prepared. The service was amazing. The Bloody Mary to die for!

Pimento Grilled Cheese Sandwich & Onion Rings
June T.

We were in town for my son's visit to a college near by and wanted to have lunch before we drove back home. When we entered we were seating with no wait. I wanted a burger while my wife ordered something lighter to the stomach which was the pimiento grilled cheese. Bacon burger was good, meat was fresh and cooked perfectly. The bread wasn't my favorite, it was a tad bit too crispy for me. Should have gotten the bun to soak up all those flavors from the meat. Fries were good, can't really mess up on fries. Wife asked me to try her pimento grilled cheese, it was too simple for me. I thought it would be more of a grilled cheese, meaning more cheese not just the pimento spread. Nothing stood out to be, but if you want a quick decent spot to eat. This is the spot. Id consider to give it another try when I'm in town.

This is my WELL DONE burger.......

The fries were delicious, and the server took off the raw burg so there's that. It wasn't busy at all while we were there but the staff seemed preoccupied. We witnessed a couple wait nearly 20 minutes to get drinks in a pretty empty restaurant.

I have lived in Blacksburg my whole life and ODB has been a go-to bakery for most locals for a while. Serving a variety of pastries, cakes, breads, and offering lunch, brunch, and dinners. They have a lovely variety of options for customers to enjoy. The bakery primarily serves French pastries and caters to French cuisine at their meals. Although they offer more than just French inspired food. In the past, my family and I have enjoyed grabbing their cakes for celebrations and individual pastries from their pastries case. But recently, they have not been up to par and have left us very unsatisfied. The cakes have been dry and do not taste fresh at all. On my latest visit I tried a couple of things, all of which were cold, with dry, crumbly textures. It was evident to me that these pastries were not made day-of and had clearly sat in a fridge for at least one night (if not more). I found this to be extremely disappointing as ODB used to have a reputation of serving FRESH baked goods and pastries. I cannot attest for the hot food they serve during meal times, but the pastries and cakes have gone down hill. Over the winter break, I had their NY cheesecake bar (which I've gotten in the past and it was phenomenal) and it fell so short of what I remembered. It was lacking flavor and the crust at the bottom was dry. This past visit, I tried a Napoleon (also have had this before and really enjoyed it), a specialty cake, a scone, and a couple macarons and macaroons. The Napoleon was so cold and the puff pastry was super stale, it practically fell apart the second I tried to eat it. The specialty individual cake slice was also very cold and the cake wasn't moist at all. Again, indicating it was not fresh or made day-of. The scone was also a disappointment as it was dry and lacked any moisture. I thought the macrons and macaroons were fine though. While most of this was disappointing, the price didn't help either. Nothing was inexpensive and the quality was completely missing. So disappointing to leave this review as I used to enjoy coming here for sweet treats. It's sad to see that ODB is unfortunately not what it used to be. I will note that the service is very friendly and they do their best dealing with customers. Could have been more efficient, but I did go during a busier time. I hope they can turn things around, but until then I do not think I will be retuning soon.

We actually tried eating here a few months prior but the wait was nearly 2 hours long. This go around we had no wait. We were immediately sat and our drink orders were taken. Both my daughter and I chose apple juice. We also ordered a small appetizer b/c she was starving. The appetizer was yummy, can't remember what it was called but it was basically like doughnuts without the caramel it comes with. Our server was a young man and he did a fantastic job. He was very attentive to our table and our needs. The food was amazing, now I see why there was a 2 hour wait last time. I rarely eat other people's grits but these were pretty tasty and cooked just right. When I got my check I was in total shock though. Two apple juices (with no refills mind you) were approx. $5 a piece. WTF, why so expensive? I could have purchased a large jug of apple juice from Kroger. Yeah, I know I sound cheap. Nope, that the case just shocked at the price of a small glass of apple juice was with again no refills. We will definitely return next time I visit but we won't get apple juice again, we will stick to water.

With two kids in tow, we were worried there would be a wait, but thanks to summer break, we were seated quickly and all of the staff were super friendly and attentive. Holy moly, the eggs. I have no idea what magic they put into them (maybe butter?), but they were sooo flavorful! My kids (who are moderately picky, especially with their scrambled eggs) scarfed them down and asked me for a few bites of my omelette. The kids cleaned their plates (pancakes, egg, bacon) and so did my husband and I! I got a simple meat & cheese omelette (w sausage) and expected a pretty standard omelette - but those eggs, man. Those eggs! Hubs got western omelette with ham, and same. Go get Joe's eggs!! You won't regret it. Added bonus points for a deliciously fluffy biscuit and hot, yummy coffee!

Joe's was a nice start to the day as they provide good food and good service within a tiny, but capable venue. Joe's is located near the Main St-College Ave intersection, next door to Hokie Hair (mind you, College Ave is no longer open to traffic, it's now a huge sidewalk). They are small and, since all the buildings along this portion of Main St are older, its interior is dark and dated. A makeover could be in order, but its old school look and feel lends itself to the friendly small town vibe I've become accustomed to in Blacksburg. This diner was nearly full, so we sat at the bar. There were three servers on the floor - all students. All three were friendly, helpful and loquacious (we talked about college in general, how to take advantage of a college's resources, and even discussed desired future outcomes of their educations - plenty of interesting topics for a chill Sunday morning). Neal had the t-bone steak and eggs, while I ordered a dish known as Joetaters (diced potatoes, cheddar jack, eggs, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms; and a choice of either bacon, ham, country ham, or sausage). Joetaters also came with a choice of white or wheat toast (or you can choose a biscuit for an extra $1.50). I chose wheat toast, and the entree was excellent. Neal ate his entire meal, so it's safe to say we enjoyed our food. Joe's is an excellent diner with awesome food and service. I can't wait to dine there again when I return. Thank you, Joe's Diner! I had a bite from the plates of every member of my party (4 entrees all together), and everything was scrumptious! The prices were on the higher side, mostly $20+ entrees, but I say money well spent! The portions are not over-sized like many restaurants, but the quality of the food really trumps that. The bittersweet aspect is that they change their menu very often so I don't know if I'll ever get to go back for that Truffle mushroom pasta dish I ordered (about which I dream quite often). I was also a bit surprised that the cinnamon rolls their website promised didn't seem to be there, though a few other intriguing baked goods were on sale. Ultimately, I took some mouthwatering rosemary and sundried tomato bagels along with some plain ones for comparison, as well as a chocolate babka cake. The bagels had that bit of sourness that makes them worthwhile, and a nice bit of browning. The babka cake, which I worried would not have enough chocolate, delivered satisfaction on a per-bite basis. What I wanted out of my baked goods is pretty much what i got.
