This is a nicer spot rather than a bar (I wasn't expecting that), and has many solid dinner entrees options, it seemed. My girlfriend and I went for dinner Thursday night. it was 7:40 when we got there. there was 1 table in the restaurant that had people and 2 tables in the bar area that had a total of 4 at one table and 3 at another table. All of which that had their food. We sit for 10 min and another server brings us water. The little guy at the bar (I think Josh was his name) finally comes over and apologizes for the wait. Says you'll have my undivided attention from here on out. No big deal, then proceeds to tell us he's not rushing us, but they close in 45 min. But hey... he's not rushing us. We order spinach artichoke dip as an app. a Few minutes later we order our sandwiches. A bacon cheeseburger and fries, and a chicken club with onion rings. about 20 or so minutes go by and the burger and chicken club come out. no fries, no onion rings. The burger had no bacon on it, so we had to request that. chicken club had 1 chicken tender on it, that was dry as can be. He said the fries and onion rings would be right out, the initial order was burnt. About 10-15 more min go by and he says hey would you like a box for the app that we didnt finish eating. I said how about fries and onion rings, he says he forgot. 5 minutes later they come out. At this point, we are pretty much done eating our sandwiches. but hey better later than never. Note... said bartender came over and apologized to us to the point where it was uncomfortable, saying he had to be the daddy of the place, The host and her boyfriend broke up a week ago and he had to be a shoulder for her to lean on. A tip was even left of 6 on a 30$ ticket. It should not have been because of the service, but everyone needs to make a living. I get that. I call back up the next day and speak to a manager; the only response was that they have been having some issues from said bartender and they would watch more closely and they were pretty busy last night (which clearly when we got there they weren't). I was told by the manager they would let the GM know. Sadly this place gets just a 3 stars from me. We tried and wanted to like this place. I'm sure it's a Bburg landmark that's been around for a while - at least it looks that way. I'd say the saving grace for this place imo is that it's a pretty casual place, kid friendly and great for large parties because of its size (in a standalone building) with a jam-packed menu (2 sided but with about 3,483 things on it), easy to access from Main St (not right smack dab downtown which is a plus actually), with plentiful parking availability. And I admit, not break-the-bank prices (see my menu pics). I know, I know - from my description above, what's wrong with this place - it sounds like a great place to go. Maybe you'll have better luck or a different opinion of this place than what we experienced... For the most part, the food was pretty disappointing and lackluster. Even for the price. Hence a grade of "C" - and honestly even that is being a bit generous. :( Party of 3 - we ordered the Steak and Cheese Sandwich, the Steak Salad and the Chicken Salad Sandwich. For choice of side for both sandos, we ordered the housemade potato chips which were probably the BEST thing we had. :/ The Steak Salad was a MAJOR FAIL - I scratch my head why they even brought it out to us like that. My companion ordered her steak MEDIUM RARE because she knows, 90% of the time, cooks have no clue how to properly cook a steak so she hedges and always orders on the rare side. I would give their chix salad a mid-grade review and will say that they skimped big time on how much chicken salad they put in the sandwich (see my pic). Service left a lot to be desired. I'm going to say that we were waited on by either the Manager or the Owner. It wasn't busy when we went (and it was well before the start of the school year) so there was no reason someone (even if it wasn't him) couldn't stop over or even walk by regularly to check on us. He just disappeared for most of our meal. When we were ready for our check, we had to ask someone to find him. (We still gave a 20% tip.) Even if I give this place a mulligan on the service, I would still say our visit was a sub par experience. Disappointed that the food items were nothing special. And, honestly, for the money even with more reasonable menu prices, it's clear (imo) that they're cutting corners in other ways while they can say their prices have stayed constant. So - you're paying for it one way or another. Lefty's will probably continue to do just fine because there aren't many local, reasonably priced places in Bburg which is unfortunate. And since the student community is so transient (turning over every 4 years), new crops of students and their families will roll in every year so that will continue to keep a place like this going. Lefty's still confuses me. The waiter was nice but the food is still so unique and not necessarily in a good way. The breakfast sandwich was great and home fries were ok (if the potato's were slightly better it would be better). The beignets were awful- they aren't beignets but rather like just some fried dough that looked like fried chicken and tasted like funnel cake dough. We met some friends here for dinner. We were sat almost immediately. The restaurant was not too crowded, so we could chat easily amongst our table. The drink menu was pretty extensive, but I chose to just get a beer, which was a local brew I hadn't had before. It was good. For an appetizer, the table split the nachos, which were massive and delicious! They use cheese whiz, beans, tomato, and beef. The chips were toasted as well. For my main I got the shrimp and chicken tortellini. They sauce was made with sun dried tomatoes and it was nice and creamy. It was really good! I all of it and was not mad about it whatsoever! Lefty's has a unique vibe to it, once a local beer manufacturer turned bar and grille, it is a spot I would recommend to anyone in Blacksburg. Pricing was fair but not exceptionally cheap. The chips served with the spinach artichoke dip were very plain and contained no flavor. The dip was okay, a little chunky for my liking but still had decent flavor. Decent size to share between 2-4 people. The Tuscan Tortellini stole the show here. The portion was massive and the pasta was cooked to perfection. The sun dried tomatoes added a unique flavor but I do think there was quite a hefty amount of them. The bread was plain but great for dipping in all the leftover sauce you get. It was drenched in the sauce!! My only complaint is I wish there was a little more shrimp because the dish is so big, otherwise this is a must try in Blacksburg! This is my son's new favorite place to eat, so we decided to check it out on a recent Saturday night visit. At 7pm, we had to wait a bit for a table, which was not surprising for a party of 9, but it wasn't bad and smaller tables were being sat in a decent time. We started with the spinach dip and nachos as an appetizer. The spinach dip was flavorful, but not as creamy as you would expect. The nachos were definitely the better choice of the two - a decent size and good amount of toppings. The kid had a burger (as several others at our table did. They are a nice size and cooked as ordered. A bit of a warning - they come on toasted sourdough (which is fine for me), but they have Kaiser rolls on request. I had the steak au poivre. It was a perfectly cooked NY Strip, but on the thin side and had a lot of gristle. The other person at our table experienced the same. It came with a big pile of mashed potatoes (not a lot of flavor), and the veg of the day, which was broccolini. The sherry cream sauce was good, but the quality of the meat means I probably won't order it again. Hubby had the lasagna, which was just "meh," in his words. Our server was friendly, but the timing was off. We got our salads after our entrees and drinks remained unfilled. We'll probably go again when visiting, only because our adult son likes it, but we'll stick to the burgers. read more

Loved how the burger held itself its really hard to find a black bean burger that doesnt fall apart while eating.
