Did you know that Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) is considered one of America's great artistic talents of the 20th century? The man didn't just write and illustrate best-selling children's books. He also created artwork during his 70-year career: sculptures, line drawings, commercial projects and private paintings. If you want to view his stuff, Legends Gallery has some on display. We recognized iconic illustrations (Cat in the Hat!) along with other sketches, fantastical sculptures and impressionistic artwork. We just so happened to have stumbled upon this place walking around and seen the Art of Dr. Seuss sign. No one was working but we were able to walk around and look at everything. There's some really cool art in here for display and for sale. It was a great spot to stop for a bit and admire some artwork especially the Dr. Seuss art. read more

Was walking down the street and decide to walk in here and oh my goodness I love it! It was a cute little art gallery but the works on display were so nice to see! The works were on sale and there was someone at a desk inside ready for any questions. I really enjoyed this gallery. I spent probably 45 minutes there admiring the art. I almost bought something too but I couldn't force myself to be that spontaneous! Overall a great gallery, not clustered inside like the other galleries on this street. And not too much on display to the point where it's overwhelming. A great balance inside! I love it! read more

I had the opportunity to visit Legends Gallery for the first time today and I must confess I felt like a kid in a candy store. Seeing all the Dr. Seuss artistry just brought back my childhood days as well as my daughter's. Hop on Pop and Red Fish Blue Fish are just a couple of my favorites and of course who could forget Horton Hears a Who. Definitely a La Jolla spot to visit...fun for all ages. read more

Legends Gallery is located next to Peter Lik Fine Art Photography. Located in La Jolla area of San Diego. Known for their Dr. Seuss artwork. As of June 2016, there were some pretty cool pieces including "Secret Art of Dr. Seuss" and paintings by "Martin Beaupre". Cool gallery and a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. There are other galleries nearby so, when you're finished walking through this small (but wonderful) collection then you can spend some time in the other galleries. The Dr. Seuss works are fun to see and look at. You can learn quite a bit about the man behind Dr. Seuss and see just how creative he was. I enjoyed this part of our trip, would recommend going on a weekend morning. read more

Being a true Dr. Seuss fan, and being a teacher who has collected almost all of the books by Dr. Seuss, I just had to visit this place. As I walked into the gallery I was immediately in awe of the wall hangings of heads of some of my favorite characters. Brilliant colors as they almost truly come to life. I just wanted to buy them all to decorate my classroom. Of coursbthat would nor be practical, but they would go great in my home den. Many posters adorn th walls of this fine galley also. My boyfriend and I were in the La Jolla area when we saw the Green Eggs and Ham statue outside the gallery. As a Dr. Seuss fan, I immediately wanted to check the place out. The staff seemed pretty knowledgeable about the artwork and told us some factoids about some of the pieces as well as about the main featured artist, Dr. Seuss. The Dr. Seuss artwork was by far my favorite part of the exhibit, but there were some intriguing/beautiful pieces done by other artists as well. My boyfriend loved the asian paintings done by Martin Beaupre. I thought they showed the majesty of nature and how much smaller we are in comparison. My boyfriend saw them as illustrations of a challenging journey, sometimes solo and sometimes with companions. (Sorry, we're not art history majors or anything. Laymen's interpretations haha) There was also a shadow art piece done by Randy Cooper in which a 3D female body model made of wire would cast a realistic shadow image behind it. Pretty cool. Finally, tucked behind a wall on the right side of the entrance was a pop art exhibit by De La Nuez. His paintings were centered around social media, brand names, and popular characters such as Mickey Mouse. He had a few Lichtenstein-styled paintings using Ben-Day dots, one of which read "I can't believe he broke up with me on twitter." Overall, we had an awesome experience. I can't help but continuously talk about the Dr. Seuss art that is showing at Legends, however, only talking about that does not do the entire gallery justice. Luke and Roree are great. The art they have by Mackenzie Thorpe and Tom Everhart are just fantastic. Really all I can say is that you owe it to yourself to stop in and look around. Especially if you were ever a kid, or know any kids, or know what a kid is, because, well... Dr. Seuss. I guess even if you don't like kids you could stop and maybe find a nice Grinch piece. I was standing there outside the gallery and I realized the whole time I was walking to the gallery I had been having these memories of Dr. Seuss books I had read growing up, and one in particular that really stuck with me, The Sneetches. I ended up on the phone with my sister and reminding her about how obsessed I was with reading this book, and as we started talking I understood now as an adult how powerful the message was, "we're all people." Roree and Luke helped me out and now I have a lovely new piece for my collection and smile every time I look at it. read more

DR Suess is in the building!!!! I was just walking through the downtown La Jolla area with my girlfriend checkin out the shops and we noticed this nice little place that had a Dr. Suess exhibit outside which for some strange reason excited us and we went in to check it out. The art in this place wasn't the typicla super complicate, have-to-tilt-your-head-side-ways-to-get-it, take to more steps back and "ooohhhhh I see it now", kind of art gallery. It was much more simple pieces that caught the eye and would look good in any room of the house (depending on which piece you get). The Dr. Suess statue outside was great but inside there were more paintings and statues of Dr Suess creations inside as well which brought back so many memories for me. The staff here was very knowledgeable about the artist as well as his creations and were very friendly and helpful. There is a piece that is hard to describe ut its called shadow art that is beautiful and always hand made from what we were told. The art here is exspensive but if you are in the area and just walking by I highly suggest checking it out. read more

Small, but cute little museum. The outside is a bit misleading. At first I thought it was one large museum on Prospect, but it's actually a bunch of museums next door to each other. Truthfully, if it weren't for The Cat in the Hat sculpture at the entrance, I don't think I'd even step foot inside. I loved the Dr. Seuss assortment - especially the taxidermy, which you can purchase if you are into that stuff. Taxidermy can be pretty disturbing, but if you have the head of something cartoon-y then it isn't that bad. lol. FUNNY STORY - One of my ex-boyfriends parents were into the singing fish taxidermy Big Mouth Billy Bass. It was sensor driven, and he hated that thing because it would constantly sing at the slightest movement. What did I give his parents for Christmas? Billy Bass Jr. lol. :) SUGGESTION - They should look into singing taxidermy! If I remember correctly, Mr. Grinch's head was on their wall. Imagine walking into a household with Mr. Grinch's head, and as soon as you pass him, he starts starts giving you the evil eye and starts singing, "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch." OMG, not creepy at all. lol. If you aren't into collections of beheaded cartoon characters, they also sell Dr. Seuss art books -- which conveniently have pictures taxidermy as well. The museum isn't completely Dr. Seuss, there are other pop-art, and modern pieces. My only gripe is that the museum is very small. I felt like I was in-and-out of the place rather quickly. That entire block is comprised of museums, they might as well have them connected somehow - but I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. If you are ever strolling downtown La Jolla, it's a pretty intimate, quick and FREE sightseeing stop. read more

This has to be the best gallery to bring kids ever. Dr Seuss gallery! Kids loved it and the folks are really friendly. Restroom through the back hallway is super fancy with gold plumbing. Nearby is a Nat Geo gallery that's also kid friendly. Stopped over after visiting the zoo. Nice stop to stretch legs before long trek home in LA. Will definitely be back. read more

My boyfriend and I were on vacation in San Diego when we stumbled upon Legends Gallery in La Jolla. Their collection was esoteric and playful, yet impressive. We ended up purchasing a print and having it shipped to our home in Northern California. We were both very impressed that we received the print in 2 weeks without any issues whatsoever. The couple who run the gallery are very knowledgeable and spent plenty of time with us answering all of our questions. The director, Roree Mayhew, did a fantastic job picking out a frame for our new print. I found Legends to be a breath of fresh air in the sometimes stuffy world of art. My wife and I were browsing galleries in La Jolla when we saw a wonderful poster in front of Legends. The piece looked awfully similar to one of our favorite artists, Mackenzie Thorpe. So we went in to check out the place. Turns out they were some new pieces by Mackenzie and that he was having show there the next weekend. The store's gallery director saw our interest and struck up a friendly conversation. We hit it off and were impressed with his knowledge of Mackenzie's work as well as his professional and easy going manner. So, we ended up buying a lovely piece right then. A couple of days later, we decided to also purchase the signature piece from the show, the one that had caught our eyes in the first place. Roree sold us both pieces "all in," meaning taxes and shipping included. They were extremely well packed, arrived on time, and Roree kept us in the loop the whole time. We also got a dedication for each piece, an autographed book by the artist and all the proper documentation. All in all, a great experience, and we recommend this gallery to other collectors or just curious art shoppers. read more
