Marietta hosts both a national cemetery and a Confederate cemetery. The national cemetery contains around 10,000 Union soldiers, only 7,045 of whom are known, who died during the Atlanta campaign. The Confederate cemetery, established in 1863, is the largest of its kind in the state. It holds 3,000 soldiers who died in local hospitals, in combat during the Battle of Chickamauga or the Atlanta campaign, or in an 1863 train wreck that occurred north of Marietta. The separate cemeteries in Marietta were created because local civilians objected to enemies lying together in death. A prominent Marietta businessman, Henry Green Cole, sought a combined Confederate and Union cemetery, and donated land toward the project. When local officials objected, Cole gave the land to the federal government to be used for the burial of Union casualties only, and it was designated as such in 1866.

Nice views of Rottenwood creek along the Bob Callan Trail. You get to walk under 285 on the pathway, be sure to look for artwork near this area. Lots of bridges crossing the creek along the way. Clean and not too crowded. Folks of all ages on the trail. We go here about once a month and walk 5-6 miles including extra trails. Occasionally will take side trail into West Pallisades. Conveniently located and definitely worth a stop if you are an outdoors person.

Not sure about the other ones or if they had a baby station at the big stall. My only concern was the doors being open to the bathrooms. The big trash cans had them propped open and I get it (due to "Covid") but I wanted some more privacy especially when this cute guy was standing by his bike literally across the bathroom door! And I was not going to move that big trash can. Only reason I rated this UPDATED review a 4 out of 5. Some of the trees limbs were hanging over the trails in certain parts. Causing a brief slow down during the trails busiest times on nice days. I went between 4:30-6p today. I was able to hike it with my 4-year-old daughter walking beside me and my 1.5-year-old on my back, and we all had a blast. The plaque reads: Sprayberry Rock This rock bears circular and other patterned markings that were rubbed into its surface by prehistoric Indians some 4,000 years ago. The material of the rock is known as "soapstone" and was used by early North American inhabitants to make bowls, the beginning of one of these bowls can be seen on the side of the stone. Sprayberry Rock was originally located some 100 feet to the south west. It was discovered during construction of this First Atlanta office, and its markings and historical dating were verified in February 1984 by Mr. Lawrence W. Meier archaeologist for Cobb County. In recognition of its historical significance, First Atlanta moved the Sprayberry Rock to its present location in August 1984 to preserve it. (Note: First Atlanta refers to First Atlanta Bank which was bought out by Wachovia in 1986 which merged with Wells Fargo in 2008.)

There is a cemetery nearby as well as two historical markers. They read as the following: BATTLE OF KOLB'S FARM June 22, 1864 The extension of the right wing of Federal forces S. of the Dallas Rd. threatening to outflank him, Johnston sent Hood's Corps [CS] from the right (E. of Kennesaw) to this, the extreme left, with directions to stop further Federal advances. Hood sent Stevenson's 4 brigades [CS] - 2 astride the road, and 2 N. of it, against the 20th and 23d corps troops [US] posted astride the road to the W. This, and later attempts failed to check the Federal extensions southward. 033-13 GEORGIA HISTORIC MARKER 1984 The second marker reads Battle of Kolb's Farm June 22, 1864 The 14th Kentucky (2d Division, 23d A.C.,) together with the 123d N. Y. (1st Division, 20th A.C.,) [US] were posted as skirmishers East of the Kolb farmstead. The stubborn resistance by the 14th Ky., and the 123d N.Y., disrupted the concerted assault by Stevenson's Division, [CS] upon the main line [US] astride the Powder Springs Road West of this point. This delaying action, together with Federal artillery fire halted Stevenson's attempt to win his objective. However, the concert a week ago was highly disappointing. The weather was perfect and I looked forward to enjoying some 80 & 90s Pop. My buddies and I agreed that it was hard to distinguish some of the songs, and we really felt there are better bands out there than that one- who was so forgettable that we've already forgotten their name. We know these aren't pro musicians, but can we get a quality cover band?? We're going back to try the Chicago Tribute Band, and we hope for a better group.

The building is listed on the National Registry of Historical places and was restored to its original glory in 1997. The property where the Church is on cost by then $70 which in today's dollar is about $1,800. Today it's a museum an tells the story of some of the area's earliest African American pioneers. The sign reads: OLD ZION HERITAGE MUSEUM Zion Baptist Church was organized in 1866 by 88 former slaves who left First Baptist Church. The first worship place was a brush arbor. Next a small wooden structure was built which was destroyed by fire. In 1888, the present structure was built. Original early 20th century pews are still used. This historical marker sits in front of the Archibald Howell home which is a private house built by…read morethe same architect Willis Ball whose other works includes Barrington Hall and Bulloch Hall in Roswell, GA. The marker tells the story of how General Judah helped saved the citizens of Marietta by asking that federal food rations by directed towards this way. What it doens't tell you about the home is that it also served as a hospital to wounded soldiers during the Civil War and that later it was turned into a grammar school for girls. In fact the school (Harwood Seminary) became the first public school for the city of Marietta. I was told the blackboards for the school are still underneath the wall paper in the house.... The historical marker reads: Here, in the spring of 1865, Gen. Henry M. Judah had his headquarters and saw evidence which helped him make a decision of much importance to local people. Since no crops had been grown here on the battlefields and, as the surrender had paralyzed economy and government, local people lacked food, funds and employment. Judah, seeing that aid was needed to prevent suffering, proposed to issue corn and bacon to the needy until a crop could be made. The issue, approved, was made and these rations did much to put Georgians and their economy on a sound basis. Erected 1956 by Georgia Historical Commission.
