Lena's has been in business since 1946. the original family sold it i think it was the late 80's to mid 90's? I'm old and have CRS (can't remember sh*t!). Anyway, As I mentioned before, it had been sold with the stipulation it keeps going the same way it always had in the past. In other words, make everything as if the original owners were still making everything. They did just that. I still kept going back to Lena's for their subs especially. It's been sold a few times and the people who own it now do a fantastic job. I commend them! Not many original places after being sold to someone else gets the same good reviews. It usually goes downhill and sometimes eventually out of business. There are a few things that are different but not a big deal. I have read other reviews and the ones who gave a bad review really need to chillax and give it another try. Everyone has a bad day. Don't be snobbish about it, give it a chance. I am serious. When I read reviews about your first time at a restaurant or fast food joint and you say "I'm never going there again!", I have to shake my head. Okay, so you didn't like the italian sub...maybe the meatball is out of this world...or the pizza just the way you like it. Maybe their fries are not crispy and flavorful but their steak tips and rice are to die for... See what I mean? Oh yeah, and if the delivery person is lost, and/or drops your pizza..it's not the fault of the company. Don't say you will never go there again because of that. Also, the guy that got lost is a big sign that he is fairly new so give him a break too. Just get another order. Yeah you will have to wait again but I bet it won't be a long wait. Forget Subway, this is the good stuff. Subs come in small, medium, and large. I had a small eggplant parm for lunch, and it was the perfect size. Tasted great AND it was cheap! Less than $4. Not too greasy, and the right amount of cheese. Marinara sauce was sweet and tangy---just how I like it. They have 3 different types of fries: curly, steak, and regular. I came tonight to grab a slice. They didn't look too good sitting in the pizza warmer, but the counter guy reassured me it's because they cook them halfway and finish it up when they are reheated. Okay, so it did come back to life and was piping hot, but it was the most tasteless pizza I've had in a while. The crust tasted like cardboard, the cheese was salty with no real cheese flavor, and the sauce was bland. I was really disappointed and don't expect to return for pizza. I've probably tried them all, and this is the best sub shop in Waltham hands down. In fact, I think its the only one worth going to. The guys behind the counter (usually Mike and Dave) are friendly and treat you real well which is important in my book. The steak and cheese subs are amazing. Made to order and in three different sizes you can get whatever you want at a great price. They have a full menu of other subs as well. I hihgly recommend anything with chicken (Parm, Buffalo, etc) because it is tender juicy white meat lightly fried to perfection although I've heard people say the Italian is out of this world too. The pizza is real good, and the toppings have always been generous. My girlfriend likes the salads which she says are always fresh and comes with a ton of tuna or chicken or whatever else. But the real deal at this place is the Buffalo Chicken Calzone. Its bigger than a pie folded in half (so a half size is more than enough) and its oozing with some buffalotastic flavor. The crust is perfect and they have their timing down - I've never had a burnt or undercooked pie/calzone in 4 years. Don't forget the blue cheese dipping sauce which makes what I've come to call the Buffozone my personal favorite. I've always been a big fan of Lena's, but I've been disappointed the last few times. Lena's has always been an institution in Waltham. I've been going there for over 30 years and their subs never changed. They had a classic Italian sub on a soft roll. I don't know where they got their rolls, but I've never had a roll like those anywhere else. Now they're under new ownership and they changed the rolls. Aaaagggh! How could they do that??? The rolls they are using now are just like the rolls in many other sub shops. They're not bad, but they're not the unique Lena's Sub Shop sub rolls I've loved all these years. To add insult to injury, the last time I got an Italian sub there they put shredded lettuce on it. I should have know something was up when they asked me if I wanted my sub in the oven. Real Italian sub shops don't put shredded lettuce on Italian subs and they DON'T put them in the oven!!! They call them Italian COLD CUT subs for a reason!!! Shredded lettuce and putting subs in the oven is a Greek thing. They call them "grinders." I heard the new owners are Russian. They must have learned how to cook from Greeks. Anyway, it looks like I need to find a new sub shop. read more

Lena's deserves all the love they can get. This is the place to go if you are looking for a hoagie. If you are looking for a sub, then there are multiple choices available for a person like yourself. But if you are the type that needs a real sandwich, say a Philadelphian from down by boat house row on the School Kill, then this is your shop. Good bread (which is amazingly hard to find east of the Hudson River), a sandwich full of meat, and tasty cold cuts. I honestly don't know why I keep trying other pizza places when Lena's is hands down the best in town. Ask for the pizza a little on the well done side and its absolute perfection! The sandwiches and wraps are also great and the salads are yummy! The only tiny weakness is the appetizer selection - onion rings are not good at all- and that the bread to filling ratio on the steak and cheese is too big! They also have a frequent customer card which when filled gets you a free small pizza! Lena's also delivers in Waltham and I've never waited more than 45 minutes even on the weekends and in bad weather! Even though it sounds gross, try a pepperoni/jalapeño/pineapple pizza and you will not be disappointed!! Great place! read more

Moved into the Waltham area around 6 months ago. We found Lena's online and have ordered delivery from them multiple times. The delivery is very fast. The pizza here is awesome. There are few pizza businesses that simply do not know how to operate properly, Lena's is one of those businesses. Ordering two simple pizzas at 3:00 resulted in finally receiving two dry, cold and overcooked pizzas at 5:00. After an hour and a half had passed, we called to learn that if we had ordered at a better time we would have received better service. I would have appreciated a discount on the late delivery, but instead the deliverer asked for full price and didn't apologize for their service. I'll never recommend this place to anyone and I'll ever order from them again. I've been ordering Lena's delivery probably twice a week for the past 2 months like a fat kid. Love their pizza, love their Broccoli Bites and usually love their service. I have to say last night I was disapointed. I ordered a large Pizza and they said I'm now in a "$17.00 Zone" and I needed to add something to my order. I wasnt too happy about this, but added a soda which brought the total up. I google mapped it and they are 1.6 miles away, or a 4 minute drive!!! Anyway, the pizza arrived and it didnt have any sauce on it. Ir's not a "white" pizza and every other time I've ordered it, it's come with sauce. Not a happy customer right now. Up until last night they would have gotten 5 stars from me, but not anymore, sorry Lena's. read more

We ate here last night. The pizza itself is decent. Very greasy, but also very tasty! Unfortunately, that's about the only thing Lena's has going for it. The salad was bad. Iceberg lettuce with bland-tasting, sliced vegetables on top. Even the dressing (we went with bleu cheese) lacked flavor. Apparently, Lena's doesn't have many people eat in, because they gave us the salad in a to-go container. Oddly, they also offered us pita with the salad. We didn't eat much. I would recommend never eating at the place itself. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired. Shouted arguments could be heard from the kitchen. The floor was fairly filthy. They don't seem to have AC. In short, the pizza is fine, but order it for delivery or take-out. read more

Hi, I have lived in waltham for 3 years now and have tried every pizza place around. Lenas is deffinatly the best there is. I live pretty close to them but they always deliver in under 45min. One time I had to leave the house in 30min from the time I ordered, I told the girl on the phone and she had my sub to my house in 15min! They have great pizzas (the hawaiian chck is my fav) my second favorite is their salad. I usually order a garden salad with a scoop of tuna. THey are always full of great fresh vegetables. (NY DELI offers one small scoop of tuna, one cucumber, a few chopped up onions and an olive in theirs..no bread either) while Lena's gives two big scoops of tuna, pita bread, carrots, cucumbers and much more! THey are deff. worth it! read more

Word of advice: if you've only ordered take-out from here, stay home. I ordered for pickup on my lunch break. I got baked ziti and a side of meatballs (i needed comfort food). This place is a dump. Crappy , gross, old paneling on the walls, smelled like cigarettes (like someone had been smoking inside for like 10 years), tiny little front room with no tables, just a counter with a pizza warmer-thing on it and a couple chairs. I thought "Maybe awesomeness comes from the unexpected sometimes." Wrong. The "fresh roll" i was promised was a triangle of unseasoned pizza crust. The meatballs were just gross - definately frozen at some point, maybe a few months ago - and inedible. The sauce they came with was from a can with nothing added at all. I had a few bites of ziti... this wasn't terrible. They put tons of cheese on it and baked it nice. It was actually not bad. But it was super huge. Also got a small side salad - garden variety - and the package of dressing they gave me (Ken's "Golden Italian"?) was OPEN when I got back to the office. Gross as well. Wont be going back, maybe their pizza is better. But the place is physically gross. read more
