The entry was through the back door of the bar and up the stairs. It is listed as a vegetarian place on some sites but we found that it had both fish and meat dishes as a regular part of the menu. We started with appetizers, a platter of historic Sicilian cheeses, which was good but unremarkable. The second appetizer dish was baby octopus in a rich tomato sauce, Polpo alla "Lucianna"mmmm! Delicious! Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of that dish which I really enjoyed. We ordered a nice bottle of wine from their extensive wine list which was great as were most of the wines we had in Sicily. For our main course, I ordered the Capocolo di Suino Nero dei Nebrodi con peperonata, pork neck steak served over sweet peppers, while my wife had a grilled white fish, most likely Bronzino, which was served on a bed of potatoes, green olives and tomatoes. Both were delicious. We finished our dinner with a dessert, a light lemon flavored cream with sweet strudel sheets, covered with small strips of fresh sliced apple. It too hit the spot. The service was attentive with two pleasant women taking care of our table. This place was quite intimate and we felt well cared for during each phase of our meal. Once again, the quality and service we found in Italian restaurants was of a high standard which seems to be the norm in that country.

The restaurant totally exceeded my expectations with limited offerings open. First the staff were all wonderful. Though we had a little communication barrier, google translate more than made up for that and I was able to order without any major issues. I had the eggplant caponata which I have to say was not my favorite; great ingredients for sure, but in the end too sweet for my liking. However, the Busiate with swordfish which is local Sicilian favorite more than made up it. The sun dried tomatoes, fresh lemon and parsley was just a great combination with the fish. I could not finish it all but that was not due to the taste. I was just simply stuffed. Do not be afraid to try Al Faro if in the area. They are located right by the dock with plenty of parking, and you'll have a great experience.

His homemade juice is delicious, the pasta and the salads are really good and the cannoli was one of the best we've ordered so far. It will be included in the stories we tell (to anyone who will listen) of our wonderful vacation in Italy, and our special time in Sicily. It is that good! MATES is a perfect little restaurant in a beautiful, rustic building in the heart of Caltabellotta. This is family-run, authentic Sicilian - and the family (the Augellos) are delightful. Sons Giuseppe and Leonardo were our servers in the dining room, providing excellent service that was both friendly and professional (and adorable). Father Felice was our gracious and welcoming host, and mother Laura provided the amazing culinary experience from the kitchen. There is no set menu - but trust Laura and you will not be disappointed. The quality and hospitality at MATES are unsurpassed! We started with a variety of antipasti which included (among other things) cheese and cured meats, eggplant caponata, and fresh sheep milk ricotta - all were beautifully flavored and complimentary to one another. Primi piatti included risotto with spring vegetables and fusilli pasta dish with eggplant. Così delizioso! Our stomachs were quite full when the secondi piatti showed up - but we could not resist the delectable slow-roasted pork shank, accented with fresh rosemary and accompanied by perfectly roasted potatoes. There was also a lovely beef dish - though the pork outshined it. And now for the dessert. You need look no farther than Laura's cannoli, which like everything else, are made in-house. To say they are the best in the world is, well, completely accurate! At least in _my_ world. And I have done some cannoli'ing. I have cannoli'd across Italy, and in the Little Italys of NYC and San Diego, and from San Franciso's North Beach to Boston's North End and Providence's Federal Hill. After having cannoli at MATES, no one else compares. Essi sono la perfezione! My appetizer was phenomenal, and the best part of the meal for me. (It was some sort of grilled vegetable dish). My ravioli were a bit bland... was not tasting any of the sage or brown butter coming through. The service and ambiance were lovely, and we were not disappointed that we made a visit.
