The 1903 original library building is blended seamlessly with the newer structure. As you enter, there are many wide open spaces to sit and read throughout the library. For the children, there is a large children section which has a lot of fun animal characters. We were visiting in the winter so the outdoor area was closed but it did look very nice. The parking lot is good but I would imagine that it would always be great to have more parking. Finally, the book self-check-out system is definitely state of the art and there is an electronic drop of book drop off at the main entrance. The architect, Michael Pagano, and the entire library team did an amazing job with this new town community hub. Don't miss the "Let your quest be for knowledge" inscription on the stained glass in the 2nd Floor staircase of the original 1903 Library building.

Sandstone High schools…read moreand towers The Gale Free Library is a stunning and amazing building indeed. The building is actually called The Damon Memorial Building and until 1926 housed both the high school and the library. The high school received it's own building and the Gale Library took over the entire building. The library is made of lovely granite from local quarries with brown sandstone trim and the roof is black and red slate from the state of Maine. The library was designed by the famous Boston architect Stephen Earle in the Romanesque Revival Style and even includes a clock tower. The money for the library was donated by Sam and Susan Damon Gale and was opened in 1888. This was the great era of library building and the inside is as impressive as the outside. A stunning and wonderful building, libraries like this will never be built again.

Granite clocks and…read morebells The Princeton library is simply amazing. Not just impressive or kind of cool but just amazing. Difficult to come up with the proper adjectives to describe this library, especially consider what an itty, bitty little town Princeton is. The library's beginning was in 1884 when the generous and obviously very wealthy Edward Goodnow gave some money to have a library built. Actually Goodnow wanted a building built to be part library and part school. Another school for the kids was built around 1900 so the library took over the entire building. And what a building it is. Made of rose tinted granite and framed by brownstone, the building includes a huge clock tower with a thousand pound bell that still rings out every single hour. The site was selected because it had a great view and the library is indeed an imposing and stunning sight as you enter into the very, small town of Princeton. Once inside it just gets better. An incredible spiral staircase, the only one I have ever seen in a library is just the start. Lovely stained glass, great old pictures and some wonderful antique furniture is scattered about along with great wooden shelves and doors. Had to describe a library this wonderful. What made it even better were the two sweet and friendly librarians that took the time the tell us all about the incredible library that they were so proud of. I don't know if any library can ever be called perfect for everybody. But the stunning library in the tiny town of Princeton is as close to perfect as I've yet seen.

Accessible, all on one floor with free parking, this library is easy to visit. They have a good…read moresized collection as well as a good mix of fiction and nonfiction. Meeting rooms also accommodate participation in civic activities. While masks are not required the signs strongly suggesting that you wear one are a little off putting, and I saw a poor staff member hanging out of an open door so she could eat a snack. Vaccines are here, no need to be so fearful.

The conference room is open to the public and was in use by patrons. Staff are friendly and efficient. The area is very rural and not near a highway. You see signs of poverty from ramshackle housing to roads in rough shape so I feel the town is providing the library with the resources it can, they just don't have a lot. But it is put to use. It was especially good to see younger people there. In some towns the clientele is very geriatric and you wonder if support for a library will live on after they pass, but not here.

We have set the dial to 1906 in the town of Groton MA. Located about an hour outside of Boston & perched on top of Gibbet Hill in Groton, are the cryptic ruins of The Bancroft Castle. Many people think that you have to jump the pond & go to Europe & other continents to see castles. Not True. Here in America we have many castles; ironically they just aren't being promoted. This is one of the Secret Hidden Gems of America that most people have never heard about or been to before. THE HISTORY: In 1906 General William Bancroft constructed his castle on top of Gibbet Hill in Groton, Massachusetts. This place was a gift for his wife. It was originally intended to be a bungalow & more additions were going to be added to create a large castle. Unfortunately he didn't have the funds to complete his vision. In 1918 it became a sanitarium & in the 1930's the bungalow became an entertainment venue. On July 4 1932 the fireworks celebration went haywire & the bungalow caught fire. All that remained were the exterior stone walls. Since 2000, The Castle & it's trails became a protected open space for the city of Groton & open to the public. Great News for us! There is free street parking below the Castle on Lowell St . There is NO PARKING from DUSK TO DAWN otherwise you can Park there. There is also a sign with a notice that this is a Tick area. Take all precautions with DEET or other spray, long sleeve shirts & tucking pants into socks & shaking out of clothes etc. You can visit https://www.mass.gov/info-details/tick-borne-disease-prevention for the latest tick guidelines. Also just stay on the main cleared path & with precautions & spray you should be Fine. I wouldn't picnic here because of the ticks even though it's a beautiful spot. It's only a short walk up the hill to The Bancroft Castle. IT'S BEAUTIFUL! You will see meadows, trees, green grass, a beautiful Castle & a white structure in the distance. You can get right up close to the stone structure of Bancroft Castle. It offers a clear open window to the natural setting on all its sides & above too. After your exploring adventure, come on down the hill & it's only a few minutes drive to see that white building. It is The First Parish Meeting House built in 1755 in Groton. Happy Traveling. AND IT'S ALL FREE! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded.
