Not a model, not a replica, the real deal. It was amazing. To look at drawings made thousands of…read moreyears ago was humbling. To see the signatures of adventurers from the 1700's and 1800's who have also stood in awe and looked at the same things only reinforced the sense that we are a tiny, insignificant speck in history. I think for me that was the best part about this visit, to be reminded how small and inconsequential me and my problems are. The guide was knowledgeable and handled well a group that was larger than I'd expected. The cave is large enough and the ventilation good enough that having a half billion people tromp through won't ruin the cave paintings. Sadly water seeping from unexpected places has marred a few but even then they've built tiny, artificial stalactites to limit the amount that gets to the paintings. And the end of the tour provided a surprise that I never would have guessed. I'm not tellin' so you got to see for yourself. They provide flashlights and if you go at the right time there's a tour available in English. The road to the cave is a bit narrow so two cars meeting head on would have meant an exciting drive in reverse for one. And the parking lot is under a roof of rock which means no rain but guarantees a poopy pelting from the local birds. There are sections that are slippery, narrow and irregular so wear shoes with a little traction. Bring your jacket too. It would be uncomfortably cold without one. Go and be humbled ....and amazed

And to add to the fun, the guide giving the English tour was very knowledgeable (I asked her about her background - she majored in art, with a focus on prehistoric art), and the setting is beautiful. Couple practical things to know - there are two English tours per day, which do fill out during the high season. Also, the cave is very cold (what else would you expect?) - bring a jacket!
