Enormous thank you and a big-up to the dynamic duo of Yelp CM.s - Christoph and Camille - for giving the Yelp community in Brussels access to such an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity! I mean seriously when else would you get a chance to attend such a fabulous feast cooked by not just one, but TWO highly ranked Michelin star chefs?
And the coolest thing is, those chefs are there, in person - you can see them preparing your food, in front of your eyes - so it's unprecedented access and an opportunity to take selfies with the top stars of not just Belgium, but Europe Gastronomy! So that is exactly what is available here and at such an amazing price, that I would highly encourage folks to take advantage of it (if u haven't done so already).
Our passes were for Friday night when x2 Two-Star Michelin Chefs were strutting their stuff as below:
- OLIVIER MASSART from restaurant Ô DE VIE
- YVES MATTAGNE from the restaurant SEA GRILL**
- BART DE POOTER from restaurant PASTORALE**
- ERIC MARTIN from restaurant LEMONNIER
For me, the absolute winner of the night, who blew my tastebuds away was Yves Mattagne. I didn't care who saw me, or if they thought I had terrible manners, I just went ahead and licked that plate clean. The emulsion he used was so terrific and incredible, words are not sufficient to describe how soul satisfying each bite was. That dish was Heaven and before this, I really did not like scallops too much, but this chef, he has changed my mind (and no, am not exaggerating here, in fact trying to figure out if I can perhaps go to his restaurant as a Christmas present to myself!!). Also a big thank you to Alexandra, who let me steal bites of this dish from her plate too!
My close second favorite was Eric Martin, whose wild venison dish was comforting and I didn't realize how tender deer meat could taste, in the hands of an expert. Each bite would release juices from the moist pink deer meat, which would then mingle with the earthy mushroom based jus and the combination of hearty rich flavour was a balm to my soul, my tummy rejoiced with each bite, and these guys were so nice, they made a veg dish for my mother, as she really didn't want to eat Bambi :)
My next fave was Olivier Massart whose sweetbreads I was convinced were walnuts, until was told otherwise, that's how expertly he cooked them. For me, this was also the most beautiful plate for the evening, (yeah, I know the scallops were visually pretty cool too, but they had a natural advantage, so I am sticking to ranking this as #1 for how pretty the plate looked). However I thought this plate was a bit too heavy in comparison to the others and hence was ranked third for me. Btw I still don't know what meat this was either, so if anyone can tell me that, would be appreciated!
To be very honest, the chef I had really been looking to taste the food from was Bart de Pooter and his hare dish was a tad disappointing, but this might be my taste profile, as I found it too salty and gamey for my taste. But the chef was awesome in person himself and during a lull, let me step behind the table for a selfie. I also think his food unfortunately suffered in comparison to the rest of the chefs, and so that's why he comes in last for me.
One more comment - I had been lucky enough to attend this event last year too, and so it really saddened me to see, quite noticeably so, how less the crowds were for a Friday night, in comparison to last year. Yeah ok, it meant less lines to get to the food, but I am hopeful that Brussels will soon return to the vibrant and energetic city it was and this event will be as crowded and chaotic as last year, over the next coming days. The sight of all those police, and how everyone was individually patted down by security before entering the event, did make me feel more secure but frankly it sucks that this will now be the new "normal" for us living in this city. Okay end rant here!!! So my advice, absolutely go to the event, enjoy the vibe, meet some gastronomical rockstars and eat some marvelous food! read more
