A lyrebird scratched by the side of the street, then took off, just like the roadrunner. In a fit of nostalgia, a kind relative who drives took me here for a bit of a bushwalk and a reminisce. I have a vivid memory of coming here as a child at night, with the falls lit up all pink and green. I can't have been completely hallucinating, as there's the odd disconnected lamppost left here, like some Narnian relict. They've still kept a couple of the weird old fake grottoes which used to crop up all over the Mountains, which have their own strange charm.
You can drive up (it's about 5 kms from Leura station I believe, so a bit of a hike) or the tourist buses all stop here too. Up top there's a park, great for the picnics and letting the kids run around, and the start of a number of bushwalks. While the Prince Henry Cliff Walk is the famous one which goes to Katoomba, we took the easy one down to the Cascades themselves, a picturesque set of small falls easily reachable without any too steep stairs. The temperature drops a good ten degrees when you get to a little dell some way in, and the smiles on people's faces walking past were a sight to see. A little bit further, there's an open lookout over Bridal Falls (I think) and the track goes on.
It's a lovely quick walk accompanied by the sound of flowing water, and the odd lyrebird. read more
