I hit up Levain each time I visit the city. I can buy them frozen at Whole Foods and bake them myself but there's nothing like a warm, freshly baked cookie from a specialty shop. I'm not the biggest chocolate fan but ordered the caramel coconut chocolate chip cookie. The flavors reminded me of a GS cookie but the cookie slapped and was so thick, soft, chewy, and gooey. It was dense, rich, ultra sweet, and everything I expected. My husband ordered the oatmeal raisin and it was more cakey than cookie. I bought a bunch of the 4 pack - Signature Cookie Assortment for Friends and Family back home. And bought an assortment box of a dozen cookies for the office. The person who helped me was so patient and kind and had some great recommendations for the gifts and for packing the cookies for travel to assure freshness. The display was wonderful and I was surprised to see other baked goods being sold at this location. This shop is very close to the Original Bakery. Very warm and inviting as a cookie place should be. I'm not a cookie person, so this review is largely courtesy of my better half. Firstly, you know how even if everything else is perfect, you tend to remember the one thing that didn't go as well? The person who helped us forgot the lemon cake. Luckily I checked the bag but only after we walked all the way back to the car but before getting on the road. I went back to claim the lemon cake I'd already paid for. The person recognised and apologised and I got my lemon cake. Now the cookies. They're sweet. Very sweet. We went to the original location of this famous NYC bakery. I could not wait to try their signature chocolate chip and walnut cookie. I found the small descended entrance way to be very inviting and so NYC ! The service was great both times that we visited, even the day we visited just before they closed. They still had fresh delicious selections in their case, and we were able to get exactly what we wanted. The second time we visited, we tried a couple of new things (I will list them below) and we were also given a great recommendation for a coffee shop since their espresso machine was down (see my review of Frame). So the second time we visited, the place was definitely a bit more crowded as it was not just before closing. But the service was still NYC fast, friendly, and, we appreciated their offerings on that day as well. Especially the baguette with butter and jam, raspberry jam ! It was so unsuspectingly good. Anyway, as I try and make myself stop drooling at the memory of that baguette, I'll close with urging you to please check out this bakery when you're in NYC. It's a must! I tried the most delicious cookies here! They're absolutely incredible. Hot cookies! Crunchy on the outside and slightly soft inside. They offer a lemon-flavored one, but I found it too sweet. The coconut with caramel is the absolute best! There's usually a line, and you'll rarely find an empty seat. I am honestly not sure what the hype is about Levain Bakery cookies. They're known for their giant, cakey cookies that cost over $5 each. I've tried them a several times, and I think the pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are the only ones that have ever impressed me. I did see that they had a Levain Blend from Canyon Coffee, which is one of my favorite roasters. After figuring out these cookies were made in Manhattan, I made sure to visit the bakery every time I went to Manhattan. Lines are usually out the door at the bakery but the lines go very quickly. Cookies are warm when they hand it to you. The cookies freeze very well. You just need to pop it in an air fryer for five minutes and it'll taste like a freshly baked cookie. This place has been the most recommended cookie place to me in the world. Not to mention, it's not only recommended, some of those who have recommended it get nostalgic thinking about the cookies they've eaten here. The staff were friendly, and recommended which cookies they liked (we ended up getting a chocolate chip cookie with walnuts, and a dark double chocolate chip cookie). We also got a baguette with butter and jam, which was very good. I don't remove stars or over judge based on others perceptions, so I'm just removing them for where they should be lost on their own merit. The first star is for price compared to size. An almost $6 cookie should be almost 1.5X the size of these in the state of New York (I think $4 would make sense). The other star I'm taking off (the most important) is the taste. I'm a big sweets guy, and I do thoroughly enjoy them so. These cookies were just ok. They were not good, but not bad either, nothing to elevate the flavor (a pinch of salt would have gone a long way).
