I went here on a rainy afternoon to check out their local books (in both English and French!). They have a thoughtful collection of prose and graphic novels. One of the booksellers gave me excellent recommendations, spending a good ten minutes showing me options for a gift for a francophone friend. This is a superb bookstore and lived up to the hype. I had to limit how many books I bought since only had a carry-on bag. I went in expecting just graphic novels but it also has an excellent collection of text novels & poetry. It's a well curated selection -- each shelf lead to more gems. While it did get crowded, I didn't feel rushed or given the side eye for lingering. read more

I had the opportunity to try out the new online shop by Drawn and Quarterly this past week and it was a delightful success! It's a bit hard to figure out navigation from the website of the publishing house to the main book store to the children's books but once I got that sorted I ordered a pile of Robert Munsch for my kiddo who is obsessed and a few other Canadian gems and they arrived quick and in perfect condition!! After sitting on the porch for the requisite 3 days we brought them in in time for a nice Easter in quarantine surprise. Really glad this beloved shop has found a way to keep getting people the books they need. read more

I went to the Librairie Drawn & Quarterly bookstore on a recent trip to Montreal. Location Librairie Drawn & Quarterly is located on Bernard St near Park Ave. It is easy to get to by public transportation. Decor The store is nicely decorated and organized. Service The staff is friendly as usual and there is no pressure to buy. Books Librairie Drawn & Quarterly has a great collection of interesting graphic novels. But don't expect to see any DC or Marvel comics. read more

If you are into graphic novels this is the place to go - I would say especially if you're not big on the Marvel/DC superhero comics that all too often people seem to think is all there is to graphic novels. (Although, I brought a friend who had only read mainstream comics and horror manga, and after browsing the shelves for about 20 minutes he found a big stack of books he couldn't resist buying. So I think there's a little bit something for everyone on these shelves.) As a fan of memoir style graphic novels and indie comics, I had seen the Drawn and Quarterly name in the front of many books over the years, so I had to visit this place. D+Q has work by local artists, some zines, French and English books and comics, a selection of poetry, novels, some new releases and other books, some signed books, but mind that this store is very graphic novel focused. I see some reviews saying that this is a book store but they have a small selection of everything but graphic novels...Drawn & Quarterly, as their website says, "has grown from a single-issue magazine to an internationally renowned publisher of the world's best cartoonists." If you're just walking on off there street and see "LIVRES" in the window then I can see how you might just think Drawn & Quarterly is a book store, but indie comics is their history. Cartoons are their whole thing! And I love them for it, and for folks who are into indie comics it's very cool to have this store in Montreal. With that said, many of the books I got today happened to be non-comic books. I was surprised to see a single copy of Continuum by Chella Man at the register counter, I had heard he put this out recently and it seems I'd forgotten to add it to my to-read list, so I added it as a last minute purchase as I was checking out. They have some quality little impulse buy books at the register. I also really enjoyed browsing their selection of postcards and greeting cards, all very cool cards made by artists. I loved the Montreal postcard series by Brendan Birkett, I couldn't resist the Rue de Saint-Vallier trash postcard and I'll be looking him up to see more of his work. The font choice and the pink color, the composition of the photo itself makes for a good photo and it made me laugh. My first impression of the store was surprise that this was a small store. I was expecting something bigger, maybe two floors, but this is a cozy little one room shop packed with lots of good stuff on the shelves (...and a discounted books bin too! Barely noticed it under a table on the floor by the door. I snagged a poetry book from there for $5.) Though I do wish they had merch for purchase - shirts, bags (beyond the free tote with $100 purchase), pins, that sort of thing. Stickers (branded, or otherwise just featuring artists whose work is in the store) would be great. I came in thinking that if I left with nothing else I would leave with some branded merch, but no merch surprisingly from what I could see (aside from that $100 purchase tote, which I certainly left with.) The staff art wall stopped me in my tracks, so I would love to see more art by the staff in the store - and I think merch would be a cool way to do that, but also I'd be curious to see their actual work, the zines and comics by the people who made these lovely post-it drawings. My friend and I both enjoyed looking at their art wall and wanted more. Again, stickers would be great. If they sold stickers featuring staff art, such as this, I'd buy a stack of them - and it would be a low price point for them to produce and for the customer to purchase, perfect impulse buy type of item for near the register, and a versatile item that someone like me could bring home and stick wherever as a D+Q memento. Oh, and after leaving today I found out via their Instagram that they have a store for children and young adults at 176 Rue Bernard Ouest. I had no idea, and wish there was signage or advertising somewhere in this D+Q location. They do have a small shelf of children's books here, but I'd love to see what they have at La Petite Librarie D+Q. That's next on my list of places to visit! TLDR: if you're a comic book enthusiast (in which case you may well have already heard of Drawn & Quarterly Publishing) this is the place to be. If you're trying to save money, don't come here! I swear you're going to blow your budget on the great books and illustrated comics in that they carry here in their very, highly curated selection here. I love independent bookstores and if you're like me and try to avoid the generic mega bookshops, then D & Q is probably the best in the city to visit. I'm not the only one who loves this place. When David J of legendary goth band Bauhaus fame, and later part of Love & Rockets, was in Montreal a few months back for a book reading and signing of his book "Who Killed Mister Moonlight?: Bauhaus black magick and benediction", he was positively raving about this place as well. read more

What could be better? D&Q is a Montreal legend and a well-known gem of the Mile-End. They have been around since 1990 and it's clear why: their staff is very knowledgable and friendly, they have a huge selection that is both comprehensive and niche-y, their prices are fair and reasonable, and they support local and independent talent. The best of the best and always worth a trip. read more

Today we walked by this store and I didn't even notice, care, or know what it was, but apparently my hubby did. After picking up some baked goods down the road he frantically started Googling. I guess he was a fan of this publishing company and had no idea they were based here. This is just as much his vacation as it is mine, so later in the day we schleped 45 minutes out of the direction to check it out again. Smartest move he's made on this trip. I've never heard of this company but I'm super into this shop! So many of the intelligent books for children and adults alike in this shop give me hope that not all people are idiots. read more

What a cute little bookshop! I must confess I have walked by this store many times and never noticed it. I discovered this place thanks to Yelp and I spent about two hours browsing their selection. They have quite a few bestsellers in their bookshelves. I easily found five titles that are currently on display at Chapters/Indigo. If you are into graphic novels this is definitely the bookstore for you. I also found many classics and beautiful editions of Jane Austen books. There is also a poetry section and a few childrens books as well. The people working there are a delight. I was surprised by how many people were coming in and out of this bookstore. Have I been living under a rock? How did I not know about this place? Needless to say I will be returning soon. I left with a classic but there were so many other books I wanted. read more

Drawn and Quarterly is a fatal place for my wallet. I am a bibliophile. I can't go in here without spending all my dimes and nickels on the latest je-ne-sais-quoi/qui I am interested in (they have lots of different genres from cook books to fiction to graphic novels -- they also publish their own books.) You will want to come back often if you are book nerd like me. I want to live here. read more

McSweeney's mecca. The holy land for books, and not just any kind. Product is expertly chosen so you've definitely got a variety. Design books, graphic novels, fashion, feminism, culture, kids... Very cute bookshop in the northern part of the city. It feels warm and inviting and is charmingly appointed. But be aware that it is on the small side, and one half of the store seemed to be devoted to graphic novels and comics. I love graphic novels but if you're looking for a huge selection of, say, literary fiction or non-fiction, this did not really seem like a good place to go. They have a little bit of everything here, but it's primarily a graphic novel shop. (I guess I didn't get the meaning of "drawn and quarterly.") I mention this because during my recent visit to Montreal I was staying downtown and it took considerable effort to go to this place. (It's a good walk from any of the nearby metro stations, and if you take Rosemont as I did it involves a long walk along a highway overpass--kind of confusing.) Anyway, I'm glad I stopped in, but had I known more about the shop I might have planned my visit differently. read more

On the way to Marche Jean Talon, my hubby and I decided to take a short detour to Librairie Drawn & Quarterly. I'm a freelance book editor, so visiting independent bookstores is a must when I'm on vacation. They had a far larger selection of English language books than expected, and I spent the better part of an hour poring over every offering. So many books, so little room in my carry on bags! Luckily, I found the perfect souvenir: Montreal Noir edited by John McFetridge and Jacques Filippi published by Akashic Books. Highly recommend for vacationing bibliophiles. read more

Missed my bus after getting some bagels from St. Viateurs'; looking across the stop, I noticed D&Q (the Bernard location), which was most auspicious as I'd been planning on figuring out where it was already. Like all awesome bookstores, the place was brimming with books I absolutely adore and books I had no previous knowledge of but just sang to me as I flipped through them. I assume that their focus is on graphic novels, perhaps art and art periodicals, but I found some awesome cookbooks, as well as books on general ergonomic and visual design. The staff was pretty chill and awesome, really friendly as I made my purchases, as well as writing down whatever cool music was playing as I was in the store. If I lived in the city, I'd regularly come back to see what exciting new things float through their rotation. read more

D&Q still takes electronic submissions for their anthology as well as the new talent forum (Drawn & Quarterly Showcase). I love that they published Chris Ware. I'm also a fan of Optic Nerve and Yoshihiro Tatsumi's retrospective volumes. Their focus on individual authors/books is admirable. They used to have a local graphic novel workshop a few years ago. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! Perhaps because the idea of books is distracting, and LD&Q has some of the best you'll find in Montreal, particularly if you're into graphic novels, but also if you appreciate a well-curated selection of literature and poetry. So backstory: I am a HUGE fan of graphic novelist Adrian Tomine (so good), whose books are published by Drawn & Quarterly. So when I was still new to Montreal and exploring the city, I almost became paralyzed when I stumbled across this quaint bookstore in Mile End. Too much good stuff. Good thing I'm not a baller, otherwise I'd walk out with stacks of books each time I stop through. Alas, my budget allows me a mere single book per visit, which my boo is probably thankful for. read more

What an absolute gem of a bookstore. Although I've enjoyed browsing through the extensive and unique adult bookstore on a few occasions, my main visits to Drawn & Quarterly have been to their storefront centred on children's books, just across the street from their primary location. The selection is attentively curated and displayed, with an abundance of books written by Black and Indigenous authors and authors of colour, books centring community leaders and activists, and titles reflecting a wide gender diversity, and for all ages, from board books to young adult fiction. The staff were lovely, letting me browse in peace for a good long while, then when I had questions, offering to order books, telling me about their delivery (free over $40 in the city, if I'm not mistaken?), and chatting genuinely with me about our favourite children's books of the moment. In terms of COVID safety, they keep a limit on the number of people in the store and monitored it tightly (and politely) and were all wearing masks, with a big container of hand sanitizer by the front door. I could go on and on -- a wonderful children's book store that I could not recommend enough. read more

I've never seen a bookstore with so many darn good-looking books. The storefront is well curated and definitely worth the trip, even for a traveler staying downtown. My only regret is traveling with a small suitcase -- so tiny that my only purchase could be the equally tiny "Scenes from an Impending Marriage" by Adrian Tomine. read more

First of all, I love the name: if you're going to go with a pun, it had better be a good one, and "Drawn and Quarterly" is perfect for a comics publisher. But the material they put out is truly and consistently top-notch contemporary indie stuff: Seth, Chester Brown, Kevin Huizenga, et al. Maybe what I respect most about Drawn and Quarterly is that they're uniquely Canadian, without seeming like they do "Can-con" just to fill some quota. Read something like Seth's "Clyde Fans"--a surprisingly compelling story about fan salesmen in southern Ontario--and you'll see what I mean. Everything I've read from Drawn and Quarterly is authentic and unusual. read more

A little bit of high-quality artistic manga, like the complete Nausicaa collection from Hayao Miyazake, but not overwhelmed with manga like many comic shops are. I don't know if I've changed or if the store has changed since the last time I visited, but I just loved my most recent trip to Drawn & Quarterly. Recent favorites were displayed prominently, books that I haven't been able to find were right out front, and the organization made everything a delight to peruse. Absolutely incredible. My boyfriend and I spent hours here the last time we were in Montreal. Everything is set up so well, the options are incredible if you're a fan of independents and graphic novels (don't come looking for superhero comics!). We walked away with a couple zines as gifts. Oh my, there's so much amazing stuff to look at, I got trapped here for ages. And the girl working was gorgeous and had really cool hair (I know that's not a super necessary fact to know about this shop, but it's true, she was a dream). If I lived in Montreal I would spend all of my money here and be fine with it. Great books too, in addition to all the comics & graphic novels. They had the new John Waters book when I was here and a bunch of classics as well. Truly an amazing place. read more

Drawn & Quarterly opened as a sort of outlet for the publications of its parent publishing house, as well as many of their confrères and consoeurs in the independent comics business. It could have just been a mere specialty bookstore, and the literary landscape of Montreal would still have been much better off. But it quickly became so much more--a truly dynamic presence in Montreal's book scene (book launches! readings! workshops!) and a beacon in the realm of Anglo book distribution in Quebec. So not only do you get a truly supreme selection of comics and graphic novels, but you also get kids' books, DIY books, cookbooks, art books, locally produced poster art, and a small, but extremely well-chosen, collection of fiction and belles lettres. Throw in some friendly, knowledgeable staff and some good taste in music, and it all adds up to the best all-around Montreal bookstore experience since Ficciones on Duluth (r.i.p.). read more

Went there for the second time because after the first time I came here back in christmas I wanted more and delivery is really expensive. So I went to Rosemont station, walked on the bridged, arrived to mile end and continued straight up and turned right when I found Bertrand Street. Unlike last time, I spent way more than expected, (I fixed a $100 budget, which I failed to hold on to), but I can't help it, because I really love the comics they sell, which are way more artistic than the conventionnal comics bookstore. When I went to pay the staff looked really happy I bought at their place and I really felt like I was helping those people, who looked more into the business for an artistic mission rather than doing it for the money, the same being able to be said for the authors for whom they sell, and they also gave me a really a reusable bag which I really appreciated. I would totally recommend for the intellectual who needs a good comic to read. read more

I browsed for a bit and got a copy of "Wild" as well as a tote bag, which was $10. The bookseller who rang me up was pleasant and helpful. a truly amazing store for both popular and more obscure comics and graphic novels! we were visiting from the US and had heard a lot about this place, and it more than lived up to its reputation. incredible selection, nice and helpful staff, very chill vibe. we were able to only spend about 15 minutes due to a restaurant reservation, but could have easily spent several hours browsing the displays, even thought the store is not large square footage-wise. speaking of food, it's in a very hip section of montreal - mile end - that is also home to lots of great eateries and unique little stores, so you can easily make up a larger itinerary for other fun things to do when you're there. read more
