We were lucky to arrive just as a walking tour was about to start and we joined in and learned so much about this majestic building, it is definitely worth taking a tour to get in depth info from the friendly knowledgeable tour guide. There is a nice gift shop, and a cafe which was unfortunately closed by the time we finished our Cathedral visit but looked inviting. I did love the smell of the Cathedral when we entered, that old/cold/slightly musty smell, I don't know if there is a word for that fragrance but if not there needs to be! Petrichor describes the smell of rain....biblichor the smell of old books.....perhaps Cathchor?

History The Normans moved the Saxon see of Elmham to Thetford in 1072 and again to Norwich in 1094. Building started in 1096 and was completed in 1145. Much of this fabric survives, particularly the main tower and the arcading of the nave and choir. The exceptions include the clerestory of the choir, rebuilt in the Perpendicular style after the spire collapsed in 1362; the spire itself (1480), replaced after being struck by lightning in 1463; the vaults, built successively in the 15th and 16th centuries; and the cloister (1297-1430). The cathedral suffered badly in the Commonwealth period, when mobs stripped what they regarded as idolatrous furnishings. Repairs were carried out after the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, and again in the 19th century in 1950s. A new, award-winning refectory was built in 2004 on the site of the mediaeval original. The Church The Cathedral retains its original proportions and ground plan, unusually in England in having an apsidal East End behind the high altar, with a processional ambulatory. The spire is, at 315ft, the second highest in England after Salisbury; the cloisters are the also the second most extensive (again after Salisbury). The arcades are wonderful examples of Norman Romanesque, but the vaulting is equally spectacular - the collection of bosses (over 1,000 in total) is unique. Those in the Nave tell the story from the Creation to the Day of Judgement, whereas those in the Cloister (which are more easily accessible) depict the life of Christ and scenes from the Apocalypse. Other furnishings of interest include a superb set of over 60 misericords, the 11th century statue of St Felix, and the outstanding Despenser Reredos. Rediscovered in 1847, this dates from the time of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381, and may have been commissioned as a thanksgiving. The Erpingham Window contains most of the Cathedral's surviving mediaeval glass. Outside the Cathedral, the Cathedral Close has well preserved 14th and 15th century gatehouses, and a variety of buildings, ruins, monuments and gardens within its 85 acres. Buried here are the remains of Edith Cavell (1865-1915), the nurse infamously executed in Brussels by the German Empire in the First World War. Her remains were brought back to Britain and interred in 1919.

Pulls Ferry is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Norwich, and is featured in almost every guide book you will read, so has to be worth a look! Forming part of the riverside walk which incorporates the Cathedral close, Pulls Ferry is at its best when the sun is shining. Personally I like it on a crisp winters day with the low sun - there is something hauntingly beautiful about it. If you are any good at photography or painting (of which I am good at neither!) then it is well worth having your kit with you when you visit - you will find it hard to resist.

It is part of the riverside walk along the River Wensum near to the Cathedral and the Great Hospital, both of which are worth visiting along the way. Pulls Ferry is beautiful and peaceful. The swans on the river add to the lovely feel of this place. In the summer it is really nice to take a picnic and a blanket and just laze about by the river, watching the boats go up and down.

There are cards, stationary and miscellaneous items, all served by a separate till. The post office is busy but there is never a long wait. Stamps and the usual range of services in a small P.O are available. There is a two car layby outside, or parking on road.

There is some parking right outside on the road however it is limited and unfortunately people usually don't leave enough room infront/behind their car for you to fit in! The post office offers the usual services as well as a cash machine, packaging items and a small range of food and drink. Service is very friendly and the three members are all family making the service very personal.

This library, situated in the Forum in the centre of the city has its own car park, which is always…read morehandy! It has a wide range of fiction and non fiction books, for reference, and pleasure reading. There is an excellent children's library with soft comfortable seating, and a superb selection of books for all ages. During the summer holidays, there are often challenges run which encourage children to read 6 books and then get a certificate etc. CDs, DVDs and console games are available to rent for a small charge, and there is a quick drop off point for those that just want to drop in their books without renewing or paying a fine for being late! Internet access is available to all, within guidelines, upon application to the main desk. This is an excellent facility that is well used by the people of Norwich.

Taverham Library is pretty small, but has all the basic things you would expect for a village…read morelibrary. It has a reasonable stock of books, and a small amount of CD's, DVD's and computer games. It also has a computer you can use for internet access. One of the best things about the library is that you can reserve items on line from any Norfolk library, and they deliver it to Taverham library for you to pick up a few days later. (there is a small charge for this service) There is a car park next to the library you can use free of charge. By the end of 2008 the library should have had some self service machines installed. It is not open all day, every day, so best to check on the Norfolk County Council website to check it'll be open when you get there!
