They specialize in being a coffee and tea house with vegan only food. We dropped in on a late Tuesday afternoon (around 3:00pm). It's a very hip, cozy spot. Note: their kitchen closes early at 3:00pm (weekdays) and 3:30pm (weekends) which is bizarre because they stay open later than both those times. The breakfast/brunch menu sounded pretty intriguing. There's about a dozen options along with a few lunch specials (up on the black chalkboard). - Latte ($4.00 AUD) - this is on their menu as "any black". Litaly got his usual latte and let me try a sip. It was actually really, really good and that's coming from a non coffee drinker. Almost made me want to start taking it up! Incredibly smooth and flavourful. Trip #2 On the drive back from Great Ocean Road, we decided to come back to MBD to try their food. Heck, we almost missed our flight out driving to the airport after brunch. We dropped in on a Friday afternoon (around 1:30pm). - Flat white ($4.00 AUD) - I tried a sip and have to say, the latte is still the winner in my books. - Zucchini hotcakes ($19.00 AUD) - zucchini & mint hotcakes with beetroot relish, pickled cucumber, chili and vegan sour cream. Beetroot relish was fantastic. You could definitely taste the chili sauce come through the hotcakes. A bit greasy of a dish but decent. - Banana dharma pancakes ($19.50 AUD) - buckwheat banana pancake served with coffee & date ice cream, raw vanilla bean whipped cream and maple syrup. These were heavy, dense pancakes (think like banana bread style). You get three of them; not sure I could eat a whole plate myself. That being said, the coffee and date ice cream were both delicious and came with a nice mix of fruits (raspberry, blueberries, banana and strawberry). Great if you want a sweet dish. This place is as hipster as you can get. This is a solid spot for drinks, the food is slightly below that level.

Primarily, Carlton Pantry is a deli/food store and what they do best is CHOCOLATE. They have heaps of imported varieties in pretty packaging - I'm not sure of the brand, but there's one variety that has Art Nouveau inspired packaging which is pretty amazing. There's also Phillippa's Bread and many cheeses and other treats. Yum! The Carlton Pantry is inside Lygon Court shopping centre just opposite the chemist. It's an easy spot to get take-away before heading to the movies at Nova, and there's a few tables and chairs if you want to sit down and eat, although it's not the most atmospheric spot in town!

Similarly, the Nova bar/cafe is generally a bit under staffed so coffee can take a while, plus they may employ bar staff, but they ain't no coffee experts. The other benefit Carlton Pantry is the selection of awesome continental sweets and delights for sale. You can get super quality liquorice and biscotti-type stuff. It's sweet to surprise your sick-of-endlessly-waiting-for-you-to-get-coffee other half with a treat for waiting once again. It'll sweeten the fact you're late (again).

If it wasn't happening there, it wouldn't be happening anywhere. First stop was the Meyer Christmas Windows. Second stop was low and behold, the Gingerbread Village. I found it difficult to find, the city Christmas map is definitely not to scale but I followed my nose and had some mapping help. After a short moving line, I entered. Veer to the right hand side and it hits you, smack on the face, the overwhelming smell of gingerbread. You walk along, it's not a big space, and you did just wait at least 15 minutes to step inside, so you realize you need to take your time as you creep along the village, noticing all of the sweet detail that went into creating this holiday city. You pass the Melbourne Zoo, with all of the little enclosures and animals. You pass Albert Park lake,St. Kilda beach and Luna Park, the Royal Flemington horse races, the F1 Grand Prix, the Melbourne Town Hall, the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The production is in it's 6th year now, and new to the village is the Royal Children's Hospital. The Gingerbread Village is brought to you by Epicure and they welcome coin donations as they all go to the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. As you finish browsing, there is a very convenient stand selling ice cream, and gingerbread men. How could you not after perusing a roomful of village with the spicy sweet gingerbread aroma, not purchase one? Course you can't. I gotta admit, the gingerbread man himself was tough and chewy, not your normal enjoyable cookie. But oh well, it's for a good cause, so surely the gingerbread men cookies themselves don't have to be top notch? If you're doing the whole Christmas/holiday feeling thing, like I was, and need some inspiration, it doesn't hurt to take a look at this little Gingerbread Village. It's tiny, you'll get through it pretty fast. It wasn't the best village I've ever seen, but A for effort in cuteness. On the plus side, entrance is free, and it is family friendly.
