And depite the competion from the afore-mentioned Clarehall, Donghmede is still doing alright. Unfortunately, the clearest indication of this is the near impossibility of acquiring a parking space. Donaghmede's car park is very badly designed, all unusual acute angles that doesn't allow for many parking spaces. Preumably, there were a good deal more before the McDonalds opened on the site. Inside, there is a big Dunnes Stores, and lots of small, often unusual, independent shops. There's also a creepy statue of some kids dancing while holding hands, and expect to see a quota of tracksuited youths hanging around the place. For all of its peculiarities and impracticalities, I still retain a great deal of affection for place. Donaghmede Shopping Centre was built before the era of soulless megaliths of shopping centres, like Pavillions and Blanchardstown, all clean-lined designs with no personality. So for all its quirks, I'd still take it anyday over it's more ergonmonically designed but sterile successors.

Dunnes is the anchor store and the shopping centre boasts a large free car park with a taxi rank on site. There's also a postoffice attached to the shopping centre.

The building itself is notorious as one of the worst eyesores on Dublin's northside. There were plans to demolish it and the surrounding area and to build a gleaming sixteen story tower in its place, but these plans might have been put on hold given the penurious state of the government's coffers. Just look at the state of it. It's sooo gross. There are a couple of decent shops in the place, though. There's a Dunnes (isn't there always) and a Superquinn (very middle-class) and, somewhat shockingly, a Peter Mark's. But apart from these, there isn't much else to write home about. And it has a Graham O'Sullivan's which to me screams manky-windblown-shopping precinct. To be honest, it probably wouldn't be that bad if they just made the building nicer. But given the current economic collapse, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

The newsagents is open on Sundays, has all the papers, cards and old-fashioned sweets at the till. It also has a hardware shop (perfect for that random DIY thing you need) and a chemist. One of the chemists also has lovely gift things. It has a zumo in case you're doing your shopping a little hungover and sometimes there's a health-food/nut stall at the door. There's also a hairdressers. Merrion Centre covers all the bases and all of the "just-in-case" things that might occur to you that you need while doing your weekly shop. Parkings free with a maximum stay of 2 hours.

A quick addition to Natalies review…read more... again it is a fine place to shop and the opening hours of the Tesco are designed to make sure you are rarely if ever stuck (I have had several emergency nappy / calpol / milupa / formula drives at 11pm to prove it). So if this one disappears I won't be doing another one. Right here it is. If one considers the tourist office as the centre of Mullingar then this place is about an 8 to 10 minute walk. Mullingar is a charming Irish town with a lot of character and darn good foodie places. Just beside the tourist office stands a statue of Joe Dolan a famous Irish singer alas now dead. I'm pleased to say I saw him live and wow what an unusual voice. He had a number three hit in the UK in the 1969 when the charts had Elvis In the Ghetto (originally titled the Vicious Circle) David Bowie Space Oddity, Credence Clearwater Revival Bad Moon Rising with the amazing voice of John Fogerty who brought bluesy swamp rock to the hippie masses; Fogerty also holds the distinct honour of being one of the few musicians to be sued for sounding too much like himself. I digress again. This centre is a tad unusual as it has local businesses in it including a local barbers, a florist, a jewellers, a fruit & veg shop and a local butchers. Most shopping centres have the usual multi national and national names. This place has Boots, Holland & Barrett, a CarPhone warehouse and also has Dunnes Stores selling food & drink in one store and clothing and shoes in another store. The local butchers Tormeys has an on site Himalayan salt dry cure beef ager so I bought a few sirloins. I didn't need a coffee so avoided the Esquires coffee place. Worth a visit if you are close by.

Airside has Smyths, Harvey Norman, Woodies, Petstop and lots more shops as well as a hotel across the road and a few large car dealerships. There is also the famous Wrights the big nightclub there which i was once at but i found it too pretentious. I have been a few time to the retail park but it lacks a decent restaurant after an afternoon's shopping; the big McDonalds drive-in does not attract me although i think there is a starbucks somewhere there?

A very very poor centre based on my recent experience. I am a disabled driver and was parked in one…read moreof their so called disabled parking spaces which I have discovered are not fit for purpose. My car was damaged in their car park because of the centre's very outdated standards. They refused to pay for the damage caused - their excuse: the place was built in 2005 before the current standards were in place. An uncaring, mean, unfair management with no sense of social responsibility to their disabled customers whatsoever. Appalling! Reflects really badly on the owners of the centre. I made a complaint to the UK owners about my treatment there but they haven't even bothered to respond. Beware parking there. Won't be shopping there again.

In the store Pennies for example we got a lot of souvenirs (Ireland t-shirts) to bring back to the states for literally €3.50. If you come here around 1&2 though all of the kids getting out of school come there to congregate lol. We saw this as we were leaving and there were piles of happy busy teens in their school uniforms coming into the mall.
