Finding a wedding officiant was one of the last items I checked off our wedding to-do list, even though I knew I should have focused on it a lot sooner. I think I procrastinated in part because I myself wasn't really sure what I (we) wanted during our ceremony. My family and I are religious, but my fiance (now husband) and his family are not. I grew up attending weddings mostly in churches, officiated by pastors, some of whom *almost* seemed to preach sermons rather than present a program for a wedding. We definitely wanted a ceremony that we both would be comfortable with, and that both our families would appreciate. Fortunately, we found exactly that in Brian Lyke! Brian was recommended to us by our venue coordinator, and after looking through his website and reading the amazing reviews, we knew we had to contact him. I was a little nervous not knowing what to expect, but our email correspondence and first conversation over the phone were a wonderful experience. Brian was warm and friendly, listened carefully to our stories and ideas. He asked pertinent questions that would help frame our ceremony, and provided examples for us to look over and a collection of readings we could select from. He responded quickly and graciously to the numerous messages I sent him afterward as more questions arose. The ceremony Brian performed on our wedding day was brilliant-- he really listened and creatively incorporated elements of our stories (how we met, how we got engaged, etc) into his thoughts on marriage. He skillfully and thoughtfully highlighted what it means to be partners for life, in ways that pertained not only to us as newlyweds, but applicable also to already-married couples no matter how long or short they've been together. Brian's words were deep, but also lighthearted; serious, but also with wholesome humor that made us all laugh. My mother and several of my friends and family came up to us after the ceremony (even days afterward) just to comment on how much they truly enjoyed and appreciated Brian's words. To be honest, I don't think it's very often that friends/family comment on something like that--usually the compliments center more around the wedding dress, decorations, food, etc.--so that is even more testimony to how special, heartfelt, and memorable of an event Brian helped to create. He didn't show up!!! I wish there was an option for no stars being that this guy nearly ruined my wedding by being a no show. I was referred to him by the venue I was married at. You could imagine my horror when, as my father and I approached the end of the aisle, there was no minister to marry me!!!! Luckily, a family member in the audience was also an ordained minister, so she saved the day and married us. Brian followed up with an email stating how he "really blew it" and that he simply forgot to put our wedding in his calendar. My now husband and I met with Brian, spoke with him on the phone, and had email correspondence all prior to our big day. We even saw him write down our info in his calender?! My husband and I found Brian on-line through WeddingWire.com when we were looking for an officiant for our St. Patrick's Day wedding. His reviews were incredible and we were really excited when we first started working with him. I knew that our relationship with Brian wouldn't be quite the same as some of the other couples he worked with because we live three hours outside of our wedding location and would not be able to meet him in person at any point before the ceremony. Even so, I expected a certain level of communication for him to be able to get to know us. The process leading up to the ceremony was okay. I e-mailed him multiple times and he e-mailed me back. His e-mails were usually short and to the point. I am a detail-oriented person and definitely don't expect everyone to be the same, so I was okay with that. He didn't ask much about us as a couple, so I offered to write about how we met, our background, etc. I wrote a rather lengthy e-mail about how our love came to be. When I asked him if he would be able to provide a "rough draft," so to speak, of the ceremony, he went on to explain about personal event that was causing him stress that would prevent him from providing a preview of our ceremony. I'm not gonna lie, I started to get nervous. I was initiating all lines of communication and Brian was preoccupied by his own life happenings - did we make the wrong decision? So, the big day came around and there was a swirl of things going on around me. My hair appointment ran long, people were running behind, but, at last, it was time. From the time my eyes locked with the incredible man I now proudly call my husband, everything was a swirl around me and I can still hear the ocean hitting the shore beside us. The ceremony was magic, it was beautiful, it was over. The photographers took a quick couple of snaps of us with Brian and then he was gone. Later, my husband and I talked about our beautiful ceremony - it was just perfect. He agreed that the ceremony ended up great, but... I was later told by family that Brian appeared very anxious that we were running behind, constantly checking his watch, revealing that he had a personal appointment immediately after the ceremony and didn't want to be late. The photographers even had to tell him to chill out! Regardless, the ceremony was very special. I just wish Brian would've made a point to allow room for...well, life! I would be hard pressed to believe we were the only wedding he's worked that was running a little behind. read more

This is a review of our initial interaction only. We never actually met Brian or had him officiate our wedding. We reached out to Brian because he was on the recommended vendor list for one of our vendors and we were looking to compare a couple of officiants prior to selecting. Brian was quick to respond to my initial email, however, somewhat pushy and not at all forthcoming with his pricing. Meaning, he was unwilling to give a ballpark price range after 2 requests. This would've all been fine. We didn't feel entirely comfortable, so we decided against meeting Brian during our visit and went with our initial choice. Here's what warranties this review. After receiving no response to his email regarding our meeting, Brian called the number I left in my initial request (my cell) and was exceedingly unpleasant. He shamed me for not returning his email and "keeping him hanging." Even before he knew that we were no longer interviewing him to be our officiant, he opened with "so this meeting tomorrow, is it even happening?" The meeting was not confirmed prior to Brian's phone call. We simply never responded to Brian's email. I would almost be alright if this was the approach for any other business owner, but not for someone who is in the business of marrying people. read more

We found Brian through this website for our last-minute elopement. He responded to my email within a couple hours of my outreach. When Brian contacted us, he asked to hear our story and then recommended a beautiful bluff setting overlooking the ocean as opposed to our original plan of getting married at the county recorder's office. We were very excited to work with Brian because of all of his reviews and great ideas he had. However... During the rehearsal, we had a couple people that were 15 minutes late and Brian was the first to leave. We practiced the processional once before everyone had arrived, he left, and then we were all confused once everybody was there. My now husband and I met online, but we asked Brian not to mention that at all during the ceremony. Of course he made it a big part of the ceremony, and included the fact that it was free. Its not fun to have all your guests laughing at you because Brian is making fun at the fact you met your husband on a free dating website- how embarrassing and disheartening on our special day. I am not at all regretful that this is how I met my husband, nor is it usually a big deal these days, but it was a big specific no-no and our wishes were disregarded.
