In full disclosure, Aldrich is an urban PCUSA church, and like many mainline denominations, its membership has declined and aged in recent years. Still, the place is open, earnest, and welcoming and I always enjoy going back. I've only heard the new pastor preach once, but it was an excellent and poignant sermon. My brother - a high school senior - plays the piano and sings in the worship band. That's saying something I think - that a talented high school kid would want to spend every Sunday morning playing songs at church with a lot of people who are well past high school age. Finally, I got married here, and so did my parents, so rock on Aldrich!

But these things aren't what make a church. What makes a church is a community of people living as people of God, and the community at Aldrich is rich in this regard. The people are unique, sometimes a bit odd, but they are very welcoming, intentional and have a huge heart for God. This church isn't perfect, but it shouldn't be. At Aldrich you won't find a performance, you'll find a fellowship of real people living their lives for God.

Before covid, we liked going Saturday at 5, so our Sundays were free. Now they just have Sunday services, 2 of them. Covid also ruined the live animals at Christmas which was really cool. We have become a little irritated with 2 pastors and their liberal ideals. Although they can't promote politics, it is blatantly clear who they support. 2 sermons were about the upcoming election. Church is not the place. We are upset enough to look elsewhere.

Music is globally sourced, using a combination of traditional hymns, world songs in various languages, and contemporary compositions. I found this church after doing a Google search for LGBT friendly churches in the Twin Cities area. It was close and I made it just in time for service to start. I was greeted by this cute little boy who hugged everyone and welcomed them. I was also greeted by probably half the people once I got inside the church. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. They had a fellowship afterwords with great snacks and refreshments. If you're looking for a non judgmental, non discriminating church, I would recommend this place.

This is a satellite…read morechurch so usually the sermon is delivered by video, however once in awhile, the campus pastors deliver a sermon. They have security at all accesses to the children's area and keep tabs on the kiddos. A fun and enthusiastic youth pastor runs a great youth program. Their Life Group Ministry (small groups) is active and there are numerous ways to connect with the people attending River Valley Church. This church does "community" really well.

Additionally it is a church that believes everyone is welcome no matter who you are on your life's journey. The youth program is great with Sunday School broken out by age group. Wednesday nights are also a good time to get to know each other through the many programs including Adult Education, and youth programs for all ages. Dana the priest is amazing! Her sermons are the best I have heard in the south metro area! During the school year there are three services (8am, 9am & 11:30am), and in the summer there are two (8am & 10am).

This church was kind to me and my family, and was a good place to learn a lot of good things, but they don't do community particularly well. When I graduated from Seminary and asked for the chance to volunteer and get involved, it was very difficult to earn their trust. There are a lot of good things about this church, and it was a privilege to attend. Unfortunately I was in the membership process for over 2 years and was never able to get through the process. The leadership was very slow and unresponsive in this respect. Ultimately we moved on as God led us.

John Piper has been the lead pastor for 30-plus years, and he will be transitioning out of that role at the end of 2012. Jason Meyer will take over in 2013 as the teaching pastor, and all indications are that Meyer will provide excellent leadership to this congregation for many years to come. While the church is large (multiple campuses throughout the Twin Cities), you will be welcomed in with open arms upon visiting any of the campuses. The downtown campus has a large, wide-open foyer where the congregation socializes before and after church services. For the coffee drinkers and pastry-eaters out there (doesn't that make 99% of us?), you'll be infinitely grateful for the free coffee (replete with Splenda and cream) and freshly-baked pastry items available after the 9 am service on Sunday mornings. The Bible is the core of all teaching and ministry at BBC. In today's postmodern culture, it's refreshing to hear passionate sermons centered on gospel truth. There is no shortage of challenging teaching and real, raw relationships at BBC. Lastly, since the church is so large, I recommend immediately getting involved with a small group. The church website has a great tool to find small groups that fit with your schedule and location in the Twin Cities.

There is an upper and lower parking lot, appreciated that you are able to loop between the two without having to get out on a neighborhood street. The church ladies put on a delicious post-service lunch of desserts, water or lemonade and Italian lunch of pasta w meat sauce, a bread stick and Caesar salad. Thank you St Edwards for providing a beautiful service and space for a dear friend and their family and friends to say farewell to a loved one.
