Okay, not all churches are great, but they all have their own unique characteristics. With the Essen Dom it was that it finally took me out of what was basically a modern city with modern buildings, and thrust me back into the part of Europe which wasn't dominated by cars and twentieth century architecture. Okay, the church itself isn't that large, but it is still a gorgeous building with a gorgeous courtyard entrance. In fact it seemed as if the entrance to the finally took me away from my disappointment with what Essen turned out to be.
