Great authentic Mexican spot! There was four of us adults and the food came out quick. We all really enjoyed our foods and I can be a picky Mexican foodie so that's saying a lot! Service was quick and there was a nice Mexican vibe to the restaurant. For sure will be going back as there was a lot on the menu we want to try still!

We had lunch here yesterday! We hadn't been in a while, but Lil Burro did not disappoint! Our waitress was great, the atmosphere was bustling with customers, but orders came out quickly! We each ordered the fish tacos. The restaurant gives complimentary salsa and chips which is always a plus!!!

Went with a family of 6 people, fairly early in the day. We were seated quickly at an open table. This is a small family-run restaurant that has a unique antique atmosphere. Very welcoming and homey. The server came over immediately with chips and salsa. The chips were warm and crispy, possibly homemade but not sure. The salsa was also homemade with a bit of a sweetness. We also asked for a hot salsa which was very authentic and quite spicy. All good. The menu is quite large with a lot of choices. The Burrito Macheca that I had was excellent. Shredded beef and rice filled with a wonderful spicy sausage gravy. Rice and beans were tasty and well prepared. My son had the Chicken Chipotle - very spicy - and very good. I had a bite. Our server was excellent. She returned many times to ask if we needed anything. The owner or manager also stopped by to ask us how was the food. Seemed like great people. Friendly. Overall this is a great small restaurant to visit for Mexican food. We all left full and satisfied at a very reasonable price. Great job! We will be back!

First time stopping in here in since 2023. My group stopped in right around 5pm and it was not very busy. This place can have some very busy times depending on the day. The parking lot can be deceiving, making you think it's busy inside. Maybe it was an off day, but it was not quite the drinks, appetizers, and food i was used to. The interior is friendly and inviting that you may not expect from the small exterior. Staff are all pretty good people and have no complaints there. It might just be a little more pricey than you expect.

Ambiance was very nice ...The liter of Margaritas were spot on ..with salt around the rim and extra lime for that punch...they started us off with chips and salsa ...gave me extra spicy (like me) salsa upon request ..we had fajitas ..My friend ordered chicken fajitas (which they very graciously substituted shredded chicken for her, (never been done) but owner came over and made sure to double check the type of chicken she requested before serving it) custom order with a SMILE and served with the works.....i.e...flavorful guacamole , sour cream ..tortillas, rice and beans! I had the shrimp fajitas that were cooked perfectly..plump and juicy..bursting with spicy flavor with sautéed peppers and onions ! They closed at 8:30 but did not rush us out...nobody started sweeping or putting chairs up...they let us enjoy our time. Thank you for such great service! We will be back

Very nice hole in the wall place. Service was super fast. Food arrived extremely quick and had no issues getting sat. Chicken chipotle was amazing! Perfect amount of spice and flavor with a generous amount of food.

Chicken chipotle. *spicy! But good spicy

This restaurant is quietly tucked away near the old town portion of Council Bluffs. Metered Street parking is available in the area. We were there mid afternoon and there was quite a bit of activity. I'm guessing that this location gets a lot of traffic later in the evenings and on weekends. Don't let the slightly frazzled menus fool you, this restaurant is immaculate! I cannot believe that I have never been here before. The hours of this restaurant and its menu clearly reflect the ability to get Mexican style breakfast, lunch or dinner all day long. Our servers bilingual capability reflects the clientele that are attracted to this wonderful spot. Great chips, nice fresh salsa with a little bit of heat and very good guacamole. I love the fact that they offer a little bit smaller portions so that you don't end up feeling like you have to stuff yourself or leave a little bit behind. The pricing is great and clearly beer and margaritas are readily available. There is even a corner of the restaurant that caters to Mexican style snacks. Great desserts too! We will definitely be coming back here again - and so should you!

For those of us who are non-military, it has become a great place to eat and is open to the general public. We were seated quickly, received menus, and ordered. My interest was in the toad taco, but when the waitress told me the chili in it was very hot, I opted for a bean taco. Bookguy was disappointed to find that the very hot chili was the only kind. We had previously ordered chili from Nettie's and missed the hot warning so we decided to heed it this time. Bookguy ended up with shrimp and fries. Big Bro ordered a huge beef dinner plate of a taco, enchilada, tostada, with rice and beans included. We also ordered mixed chips and guac. Big Bro had a margarita which looked good to me, but I was driving. I liked the taco which was generously stuffed with beans, lettuce, cheese, and diced tomatoes. I added the salsa from the table. It was excellent. With the chips and flavorful guac, I had a just right lunch. Bookguy said his shrimp and fries were just ok. Big Bro thought everything in his meal was very good, except he wasn't sold on the rice. He wanted another margarita but decided against it and said he should have ordered the grande size. It's amazing to me that the prices here are so reasonable. It's good for families on a budget. They do charge extra for using a credit card. It's not fancy, but it's clean, bright and inviting. What's not to like?

I didn't think you could mess up a bean and cheese burrito. Turns out, if you put a hug gob of cold cheese in the middle of it to the point it makes the beans cold and essentially leaves you eating cold shredded cheese with a bean sauce on the side, you can in fact mess up a bean and cheese burrito. Twice I've ordered lengua tacos and been given steak instead. If the steak wasn't pure gristle, I likely would not have been as sad about this as I was. The last time this happened they didn't give me any radish either. I'm hoping that doesn't mean they will stop giving radish with the street tacos as I do like that flavor combination. Lastly, they frequently give me random drinks rather than the pina drink. It was understandable when they gave me a pineapple Jaritto. But I was really confused when they gave what I think was Jicama. I am not a native Spanish speaker. The language barrier is very much a factor in the issues I've had. My interactions with staff have been standard for fast food service. No one outright rude but clearly they are trying to get through the shift. I'm not faulting them. I've been there. I'm not sure why anyone would go here for how it looks. Unless semi grimy drive through is your jam. Overall, I'll probably be back because there currently isn't a better option close by. If that were to change, I would likely take my business elsewhere.

Family-run taquerias are owned and operated by folks who often feature family recipes passed on by grandparents and other relatives who came from Mexico and beyond. You'll find familia in the kitchen. If that doesn't make it authentic, I guess I don't know what authentic means. That being said, Big Bro and I tried Los Portales recently. We were underwhelmed by the flavors until we put on the sauces. Sauces are a perfect example of differences in preference, not authenticity. The ones at Los Portales were thinner than what I prefer, but the flavors were just what was needed. What one person likes, another doesn't. The presentations were beautiful and the portions were large. I had a gordita which I expected to love but didn't. The thick house made tortilla was tasty, but I discovered I like crispy better. We devoured the guac and chips, delicious. Big Bro ordered his go-to for Mexican restaurants, chimichanga but it was just ok. Adding sauce made it more flavorful. Many people prefer the food at Los Portales and call it authentic. I also call it authentic, but prefer other recipes.
