We took advantage of all the promotions: happy hour discounted cocktails and FIVE DOLLAR wine (um, I'll have several glasses, please), 10 tapas for AUD $109, as well as 3 tapas for AUD $30 - great deals! We shared a ton of small plates and pretty much ordered the entire menu, including a large sharing plate, the Butcher's Block meat platter. Some hits, some misses. Recommend ordering: chicken wings, chicken skewers, arancini, and quinoa salad (add lamb). Everything else was just OK. Overall, decent food and drinks at affordable prices. Service was quick especially for our large party.

Ok, the fox might be a mere hallucination but the cocktails exist- oh boy, do they exist- and so does the tantalizing food menu to match. I went recently to Mr Fox for dinner / drinks with a friend. We ended up ordering the meat share platter ($25) which had a little bit of everything included- steak skewers, marinated chicken wings, toasted breads with three dips, cured ham strips, falafels, olives and a small bowl of mixed nuts. It was enormously good value for money as we could barely even make a dent and before becoming stuffed to the point of bursting. I must also make a nod to the cocktails, which are fantastic. I started with a mint julep which certainly didn't disappoint in the authenticity department. Served over crushed ice in the traditional chilled silver glass, it was the perfect refreshing kick in the pants I needed. My second drink of the night was a classic Manhattan, which was also flawlessly created down to the tiny cherry in the bottom of my glass. And did I mention my favorite thing about Mr Fox? Well, it's the free bowl of popcorn you receive with your order. It's vinegary and salty and just oh-so good.

The paintings that adorn all the walls are pretty cool (except for the one that's upside down...fighting the OCD to turn it the right way up!!!) and the theme of always having something to look at continues to the bathrooms, us guys even get retro 50-60's topless pinup pics (most probably to take attention away from the total mess that the itty bitty bathroom is in). As I've only been on Friday's, I know happy hour is from 5-7pm with beers, wine, cocktails & jugs on the menu, all seemed to be priced ok (nowhere as cheap as places close-by like the Brighton Hotel). Be warned that they're quite strict on times, so don't show up 5 to 5 and expect happy hour prices. The range of drinks isn't massive here and most of the drinks are bottled. Outside of happy hour, the price of drinks can be pretty high. I felt like cider after a long day at work and saw that they had Rekorderlig on the menu, but for $14 a pop I'm going to pass (only $7-8 at BWS). Now, what I give the place credit for and really is a hidden gem...the pizzas. Perhaps it was the alcohol, but free pizzas with jugs were most welcome (not sure if this happens all the time). I tried the chorizo pizza which was awesome, flavourful slices of chorizo, flowing with melty cheesy goodness and on a decent thin base. I also tried the margherita but can't remember how it was...I pretty much inhaled it (my colleagues seemed to do the exact same thing). As it's so close to work, I'll probably keep hitting Cafe Lounge up on a Friday but don't really see myself trekking over from the North Shore at any other time. If you are in the area though, go lounge around, chill, have a drink and try to resist the need to stick the toy animals/dinosaurs they give you as table numbers into the giant jars with candles...(it wasn't me, seriously...).

Huge, high ceilings, darkwood floors, light streaming in through giant windows, and a penchant for partying that blows the pants off me damn near every time I go there. The other month it was their birthday party with art installations and live entertainment, today it was the Superbowl, with 50c buffalo wings and the game on a colossal 3.5m big screen. Travelling inside to get drinks we were greeted with a dank dungeon dimly lit by magenta neon sleaze. I'm sure I spotted a raised dais, all that seemed to be missing was stripper pole steel. Returning outside again I was reminded just how bright it was. My eyes struggled to readjust, and it seemed almost ridiculous that there wasn't some sort of trendy sail or shade set up to block the obvious saturation of sunburst that this outdoor patio was forced to endure... Was I burning? Was I burnt? I had to swap seats to ensure shady coverage, and it wasn't until we'd been there for literally 45 minutes the wait staff decided to show off the electronic shade cloth they'd decided wasn't worth using till most of us were lobster bisque red. So how was the service? It wasn't what you'd expect from a restaurant but is maybe indicative of a bar selling bistro style meals. Everything came out at different times. Would we go again? I can almost bet we will, but no doubt we'll skip the garlic, ask for the shadecloth straight up, and leave our expectations at home. priceless tip: Bring sunnies (and maybe even a hat) if you plan on sitting out the back of Bar 100.

Mind you, as it turned out, it was all a bit of fun, and there was certainly no hard feelings between the two. Anyway, this is your typical, laid back, university pub, the type that I do quite enjoy. There are good beers on tap, and a great, and rather grungy, atmosphere, things that no doubt will bring me back again (probably because they tend to make me feel young at heart).

My friend did taste some beers and ended up ordering one she really liked . I was still a little jet lagged and was just there to rest from traveling via train and bus with our luggage. Their advice was very useful and we used a lot of it to plan out our days and adventures. If I ever go back to Sydney I'll be sure to stop in and say hello to my new friends.
