What really bothered me was that they wouldn't issue a refund, even though the item wasn't available due to their inventory. In my opinion, if a restaurant can't provide something you've already paid for and there isn't a suitable replacement, a refund should absolutely be an option. They immediately offered me the choice of outdoor seating or takeout, determined to make my visit work. When I first rolled up, there wasn't a line in sight. Three minutes later, the place was buzzing, with customers filling the restaurant and cars pulling into the parking lot. That's always a good sign. The two greeters were warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. I opted for takeout and ordered the soft-shell crab with potato salad and collard greens. About 15 minutes later, my meal was carefully packed and ready to go. Back at the hotel, it was time to dig in. The potato salad absolutely stole the show. Creamy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned, it was easily the standout of an already delicious meal. The soft-shell crab and collard greens were hot, well seasoned, and equally satisfying. Very long wait. From waiting outside to waiting for the food. Took about 40 minutes from when we paid for our food order to actually getting the food. They also served the food in waves. Seemed like they served all the food for the outside orders, then the upstairs orders and then downstairs. We had very high expectations. The gumbo was good, but not the best. We waited in line for a while on MLK day to try this place out. Service was great, menus were handed out and there was someone to answer any question we had while waiting. I'm not sure if it's because they were so busy that day that it compromised on the food quality. The fried chicken, though really crispy and juicy, was extremely salty. It was a shame because the cook on the chicken itself was perfection. The amount of salt on there was just unbearable. The Mac and cheese and potato salad was just mid. It's just there to be there as a side. The crab cake was not bad, had good flavors, but again a bit too salty as well. We weren't able to get a seat at a more well known spot and couldn't have been a better turn of luck because Li'l Dizzy's knocked it out of the park. Lil Dizzys is a very popular spot with a good system for seating guests and friendly staff. Note: the first floor has more visual character than the second. As for the food, I had the catfish with shrimp and sauce on top (the name escapes me now) and although the catfish was a bit salty, I enjoyed. It had a great crunch to it - basically a texture-filled dream to my palate. The dirty rice with ground beef was okay and the potato salad had a strong vinegar taste (unsure if it was the relish or the mustard- or if their recipe actually calls for vinegar). The bread pudding was kind of 'soupy' (too wet) and aside from sugar, I didn't taste any cinnamon, butter or other notable flavors. Did not eat it. I still encourage everyone to try it - there are so many rave reviews on here! But I expected more in terms of flavor. I came to town for the Essence Festival and was very disappointed with my experience. The owner was rude and unprofessional in the way she spoke to customers, which created an unwelcoming atmosphere. An elderly person had a diff person standing in line and was sitting in a chair and she said that was not allowed. When someone asked about the gumbo her response was "What about it?" The mac and cheese had to be sent back twice because it was scorched, which was frustrating. Based on my experience, I would recommend saving your money and dining elsewhere. This a throwback! A real treasure. From the joyous greeting to the legit grandma made fixins. It feels like home here. The kindest greeter ever shares the specials when you walk in and also plays air traffic control for the staff. We ordered at the counter and sat, then food came promptly. To be honest, the area was a bit sketchy but we didn't have trouble walking about. When you walk in, you are greeted with a "Welcome to Li'l Dizzy". They serve a lot of soul food dishes here. There is no bathroom but they do have hand sanitizer. A lady walked us through the menu. You have to order up front and they assign you a seat to sit at. We ended up getting white chicken with gumbo. The gumbo was meh at best. The white chicken was worth getting. I wouldn't say it was the best chicken but it was freshly made and was pretty tasty.
