As a Rancho Santa Fe local, I finally gave Lilian's a try after hearing all the buzz. While the setting delivers, the food fell short. The atmosphere is undeniably chic: warm lighting, elevated interiors, and a patio that feels effortlessly upscale. It's the kind of place you want to linger, drink in hand. I went with the wagyu NY strip and lobster pasta. The steak? Solid. Nicely seared, well-seasoned, cooked to temp. I mean, it's wagyu. But for $96, I expected more than just a bare plate with a hunk of meat. Zero garnish, zero presentation. It tasted good, but didn't justify the price tag. The lobster pasta, unfortunately, missed the mark by far -- overwhelmingly salty to the point where both orders at our table were hard to finish. Redemption came in the form of dessert: the churro beignets were actually impressive. Crispy, warm, light, and nostalgic in the best way. Service was fine, but not particularly memorable. Honestly the reason the review is 3 stars instead of 4 was because of the Lilian's Wonderland desert. Don't get me wrong, the presentation of the "rocks" and mushroom caps in the forest scene was like a work of art. Maybe the dish should have stayed as an art piece because most of the elements were inedible. The pistachio and chocolate cake crumb base was dry and lacking any flavor whatsoever. The meringue mushroom caps were extremely chewy clearly not the correct texture. The best part of the dish was actually the scoop of vanilla ice cream. For a $20 dessert the quality was disappointing. I'm sure many dishes at Lilian's are worth tbe hypoe but unfortunately that wasn't my experience. read more

Lillian's Restaurant is located within the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, on Paseo Delicias, in the Village. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and decided to try Lilian's after getting couples massages at the spa. Great ambiance, design touches, overall atmosphere. However, despite only having a few tables occupied in the restaurant, our food took almost an hour to arrive. We were there to celebrate a special occasion, and instead had to box our food up as soon as it arrived to get back to our babysitter. The food was tasty and the server did throw in some dessert, but we didn't imagine we'd be eating our anniversary food out of to-go boxes at home. There were other little things like not offering creamer or sugar for our coffee, but the food delay was definitely the biggest disappointment. I can understand if the restaurant was busy, but we were there at 2:30 and it was 2-3 tables (both inside and out). Lilian's along with Bing's Bar opened in October as the renovated in-house restaurant and bar at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. You have to make a winding drive inland to reach this historic property in RSF which is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year. The multi-million dollars spent resulted in a vintage decor reminiscent of the turn of the 20th century. Between the dining room, outdoor patio, and bar/lounge area, my guess was approximately 120 diners could be seated. I took an open spot at the bar which had about a dozen high-top chairs because the dining room was fully occupied during my visit. The one-page dinner menu started with salads at the top followed by beginnings, sea/land/garden entrees, and accompaniments. The prices were not much different than the high-end restaurants in enclaves such as La Jolla, Del Mar, and Coronado. I chose two of the beginnings for a light dinner... the Lamb Chops and Grilled Mediterranean Octopus. Four French cut pieces of lamb rib were served with a topping of mint chimichurri, whipped blue cheese, and honey walnut. I enjoyed the crunchiness of the walnut to contrast with the gamey meat. Instead of being plated as an entire tentacle, the octopus was cut into small slices and garnished with pee-wee potato, olives, chickpeas, and chili oil. The kitchen did a great job of cooking the protein until it was very soft. The bartender was polite and on point with her service. read more

Our first time visiting Lilian's in Rancho Santa Fe, my daughter picked this restaurant to celebrate her birthday. We didn't have a clue to what to expect, all the staff and servers were very courteous and attentive. The taste and of every dish we ordered was amazing and the presentation was great. We loved the hotel where the restaurant is located, it reminded us of an old hacienda. Not to many restaurants carry mezcal, I had a Mezcal cocktail called Infierno Fashion with habanero bitters, which was very good and wasn't too spicy. We had the Peking duck tostadas as our appetizer and I had the 14 oz New York strip and my wife had the king salmon plate which she loved. The steak was amazing, it was seared to perfection and I paired it with the charred carrots and the potato puree. The charred carrots had chipotle pesto, they were probably the best carrots I've ever had. We ordered the banana split and the churro beignets for dessert, they were both very good , my favorite were the beignets. Will have to come back soon and enjoy some drinks at their bar. read more

I have to give credit where credit is due. After our initial sub-par visit, management reached out, eager to make things right. We returned for lunch and had an amazing visit from beginning to end. First of all: the property is beautiful. Their patio overlooks a courtyard and is extremely well-kept. Our server greeted us promptly and she was great... friendly, involved, helpful... everything you could hope for. The manager visited our table throughout the meal to check on us, making time to have a conversation about the recent remodel and upgrades to the property. He really made us feel special. The food was perfect. My wife had the chicken sandwich and I had the steak frites. Both were exactly what we wanted and were cooked to perfection. For dessert, we were able to try everything and WOW... so good! Especially the bruleed beignets with a trio of dipping sauces. We could've eaten those all day if we weren't already so full. I could go on but let me say this: our lunch at Lilian's was one of the best dining experiences we've had in a very long time and I would have no problem returning or recommending a visit from family o friends. Situated inside The beautiful Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, is Lilian's. Reservations recommended as we dined for lunch it started out quiet but quickly filled with many locals. Although we had reservations, The hostess was apologetically busy and took awhile to get to us. Once seated, The view from our table overlooks the property and loved the inside and outdoor area of this restaurant. The Monterey Salmon was flavorful, gorgeously plated with a delicious sauce. The creamed spinach and brown butter sides paired well with the salmon. The grilled chicken sandwich was not my favorite. The olive tapenade with the in house made olive bread was overpowering and had to scrape some of it off. The sandwich was lacking and next time will order a different menu item. The meal was completed with beignets and was my favorite part of the meal. The beignets were crispy, with a sugar torched crust but soft & moist inside and included 3 different sauces that paired well with the beignets. Absolutely loved it! read more
