Having used personal trainers at various corporate gyms over the years I was very impressed with his deep and wide ranging knowledge and his open, non-judgmental manner. After a few sessions I now look forward to exercising and learning how to work out for my own bodies needs with supportive encouragement that somehow manages to drive me on without feeling self conscious or too forced. Working in a mostly desk bound job and being a BIG foodie the sessions with Iain have improved my general mobility (weight loss!), strength, fitness and most importantly inspired a desire to exercise that was previously lacking! I can't recommend his services enough and want to pass on my endorsement to the lovely Yelp community. A seriously good guy. Five stars all the way.

After hearing from some others how much better they felt afterwards, I made the appointment but as the day approached I found myself getting quite nervous. I needn't have worried at all. Cathy's a great therapist and - from the beginning - was very sensitive to my nerves and my modesty! She has a great treatment centre - right in the middle of town. I went for an after-work appointment which isn't always easy to find but suited me. I'm amazed at how much better I'm feeling after the treatment - it's remarkable that something handed down by the romans could be so useful in this day and age.

The website was informative and well structured and it was easy to make an online booking. Although I was a bit nervous at my first appointment, I immediately felt at ease with Cathy. She is very professional, calm and a good listener. I also like that she explains everything so well. The facilities are immaculate, modern and very central, but also private as they are tucked away from the main streets. I have had 4 treatments now. I definately recommend Cathy. If you are thinking about getting this treatment done, then go for it, you will be in good hands.

Napiers was established in Edinburgh in 1860 and this store on Bristo Place is where it all started. Victorian botanist Duncan Napier was the magician behind these health potions and up until the 1970's Napiers was passed from generation to generation as a family run business. After the death of the last family member in the line of Napiers to carry out this tradition the business closed down and it wasn't until the 1990's that it was revived - thank goodness for that! Many of the old recipes were found so the store is still true to the original. All medicine here is herbal medicine so it's reassuring that everything is natural. I used to take paracetamol whenever I had the slightest ache or pain but after living in Germany for a year I was a bit lost as you can't even buy paracetamol/cough syrup/ibuprofen anything medicinal without a prescription, but they do have an abundance of shops like Napiers and I found many of the natural products actually worked better and even when I went to the doctors I was given natural medicine as a prescription and a list of health foods to eat/foods to avoid. I guess it's a bit more informative than going to the doctors here and just getting crap that knocks you out. Due to the history and this being the original Napiers store, this branch has a great lived in atmosphere, they have little potted plants outside surrounding the doorway and inside it's bright and airy. The staff here are also very knowledgeable so whatever your ailment they will be able to recommend something for you. This branch is a dispensary but also doubles up as a clinic where you can get treatments such as massage, acupuncture etc.

Normally I end up working out in the 'muscle' type gym's but for convenience, opening hours and facilities, I signed up to the Nuffield. It is not cheap but worth the money if you go regularly. Clean, plentiful equipment in working order. Large range of classes at times to suit any needs and the pool is fantastic. I do love the steam room as well with its dark ceiling, fairy lights and menthol steam. To start, I had a health MOT - working out at 6am meant I could get this the morning after registering so all the height, weight and cardio measurements taken. Then the next day I was set my customised programme, based on what I wanted to achieve and what I liked doing. This part I like as if I don't like something, I'll not do it so my instructor listening to me was great :-) Check up will follow two months after the first assessment and then my programme will be modified so I don't get bored. I am a gym, equipment and pool kinda gal so I can't comment on the classes. The facilities are lovely and clean anytime I've been in and the babyliss hairdryers are really powerful so this is a bonus. All in all, really love it here. Happy working out 5-6 days per week and more than getting my £43 worth a month.

The AC in the classes has been a bit iffy of late and if I compare it to local authority gyms outside of Edinburgh the overall standard isn't brilliant but then that's not really am entirely fair comparison. All in all if you're a regular gym goer it's good value for money - especially if you get some sort of discounted membership.

If you are into body-building then you can stock up on all the supplements and drinks that you might need to do whatever you do! Of course there are vitamins for us puny folk in here from Vitamins B and C to St John's Wort and iron supplements. Not really a place to browse if you have no idea what you're looking for, but great if you do!

My friend used to go out with a guy who drank body building shakes all the time and hit the gym about 5 times a day, he ended up looking really weird with a tiny head but a huge body and his personality was seriously lacking... it was like talking to a brick wall. They also stock regular vitamin pills so you don't need to be a budding Adonis to come in for a health fix. Prices are reasonable and they have a good selection.

It's a bit of a maze so allow 5 minutes to find FASIC once your in the building. I first encountered FASIC 10 years ago when badly injured and needed intensive physiotherapy (twice a week for 8 weeks then once a week for 10 weeks), I've been treated at least four times since then by the physiotherapists at FASIC. They have always been very thorough with the history and examination of the injury, given good treatment and exercises and advice on minimising future injury. I've found them happy to not to recommend seeing you for a follow up appointment unless what they have advised hasn't worked. Unlike NHS physiotherapists they focus on returning you to your previous level of activity. If being able to do the splits is something that you could do but now can't they will give you exercises to help you get there rather than telling you that it isn't important. It's very much sports focuses but they will treat non sporting injuries too. As well as physiotherapist services they also have podiatry, sports medicine and other services based from here. Annoyingly they don't post prices on their website but this is as they have discounts for staff, students and members of the gym. It was £42 for a 45 minute consultation with a physiotherapist without any of the mentioned discounts in November 2015. The reception will provide detailed receipts for insurance claims but they don't do direct billing.

If you can find your way passed the brightly painted, winding corridors of the Pleasance gym, with…read moreits terrifyingly awful yet somehow hypnotic RnB and dance tracks and you don't kill yourself falling over the cleaner's equipment that always seems to be lying out, you might just do your body a favour. Housed within the university run Pleasance gym is Fasic, a sports medicine centre with multiple services available. It's no wonder this place comes recommended by Olympians. Fasic got its name after those who set it up in the late 80s decided "Fitness Assessment and Sports Injuries" made a less unfortunate acronym than "Fitness Assessment and Recreational Trauma". Though its also run by the university it is technically separate from the gym, and all are welcome, though they do offer discounts to gym members. I tried out Fasic after deciding I needed a second opinion on my ongoing back problems. As I'm active in sport I thought it was best I maybe went to a physiotherapist that specialised in sports related injuries. I'm glad I did. The first time you visit Fasic you will be seen by a well trained sports physiotherapist who will then recommended either further treatment if necessary, or that you and see another specialist, which in my case was podiatrist. The only prerequisite is that the injury is either directly sports related, or that you are injured and active in sports. Despite my previous physiotherapy treatment, which was to some extent a success, the physio at Fasic managed to uncover the source of my problem which is a major step forward. I found the attention was great, and the staff were very friendly. All this for a great price. With my discount I spent around £25 for a 45 assessment. That might seem a lot but for physio that is really a bargain! The only drawback is that Fasic it is pretty popular. I am now currently waiting three weeks to see a related specialist. But if the treatment continues at this quality, it will all be worth it. As mentioned already discounts are available to students and those who are members of the gym already.

The chiropractor work is complimented well with massage and exercise classes when you need it. Other nutritional and lifestyle support is also provided. Unfortunately I moved away from Edinburgh otherwise I would be continuing my care with them, however they were also supportive in passing on the records of my treatment so I can find someone new nearby.
