These little plaques located on roadsides speak of our past, a past that should never be forgotten.

Over the years, downtown Huntsville has become a legitimate destination with numerous delicious restaurants, new, sleek hotels, and rooftop dining and bars! Christmas is just not complete without a visit to the Tinsel Trail in Big Spring Park. This massive, free, live decorated tree display is fun to visit! Each, of more than 400 trees, tree is sponsored by a corporation, non-profit, etc., and each one is themed. You can spend a few minutes there or an hour plus! Ice Skating in the Park has been around for several years now. It's in a pop-up ice skating rink behind the Huntsville Museum of Art. On/around the square proper are the Courthouse, Harrison Brothers Hardware Store, the beautiful Church of the Nativity, and Big Spring Park. A few blocks north of the square is the Madison County Veteran's Memorial which is a must see! It really is a lovely park honoring our Veterans with flags, statues, displays and brick pavers engraved with our beloved Veteran's names, Service details, etc. Here, too, you can spend over an hour, or if you are looking for a certain memorial paver, you can find the location on the website. The Huntsville Museum of Art is just southeast of the square and has a free admission day once a month. It's fun to explore the museum and afterwards, eat at Pane E Vino which sits on the edge of Big Spring Park - dining al fresco here is so fun during nice weather! The Twickenham Historic District, Old Town Historic District, and Five Points Historic District are must sees! As the Huntsville.gov website says the Twickenham district is a living museum or architectural styles dating from 1814 ranging from Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Bungalow to post-war homes and it is graced by more than 65 antebellum homes. You can tour these districts from your car, on foot and use the HuntsvilleHistoryTours.org to follow along with local tour guides video tours. Alabama Constitution Hall Park/Early Works Museum is another popular downtown destination. Don't forget the Von Braun Center and Mars Music Halls which are great venues for everything from Huntsville Havoc Ice Hockey, Broadway Theatre League performances, to shows by acts like Queensryche. Downtown Huntsville is truly a fun destination for all ages to enjoy!

But back in Aug. 27th, 1937, a tragic tale unfolded, one that has haunted the buildings occupants til this day. Eight year-old Constance Couch was playing with some friends upstairs and crawled out a window to where the skylight was. She was leaning into it, trying to see the customers downstairs when it gave way, sending her hurtling downward into the store in a rain of glass. Her head hit the edge of a coke box and she lie motionless. She was rushed to the hospital with a fractured head and her last words spoken were "The light is hurting my eyes". She died that night. Years later, when the building housed Robert Parham's museum, an antique store and a theatre, many people would hear children's footsteps running on the stairs. Robert would find his books moved or placed across the room. Some have seen the little girl and have even spoken to her. If she is still there, I'm sure she would like to play with you. She;s probably very lonely.

One of the great things about Athens (at least for me) is that despite the growth,their downtown area is still quaint and just screams small-town in such a positive way. Athens was incorporated way back in 1818 and a lot has certainly changed, but Athens continues to grow and hopefully in the positive way that it has grown. I would definitely recommend a visit to good old Athens, Alabama.

To me, it is still a small town, having a population of nearly 31,000 in the 2023 census. I love the Athens downtown because it truly is quaint! They have, for example, Limestone Drug on the north side of the square, that still has a soda shop with a marble counter from ages ago (over one hundred years), old fashioned soda shop stools, and serves hand dipped ice cream, various sodas, and milkshakes! U G White Mercantile is another cool downtown store! UG White has been in business since 1917 and offers provisions, quality goods and gear, and offers local goods, hot coffee, cold bottled Cokes, various candies by the bag/pound, etc., a large variety of Lodge cast iron products, a good variety of children's toys, and more! Downtown Athens has numerous antique stores that are fun to browse and all are staffed by friendly, helpful folks. Every transaction I've had at the various Athens municipal entities has been seamless, such as renewing drivers licenses, car tags, etc., with very kind, professional staff who are extremely well organized. There are spectacular antebellum homes in downtown, too! We've had nothing but exceptional service and care at Athens Hospital including my husband's elbow surgery. Athens' numerous events include Merchant's Alley Happy Hour Music Series, Friday's After Five, Old Time Fiddler's Concert Series, Limestone County Sherriff's Rodeo, and more! I'm thrilled Athens now has great dining options such as the Salty Cod (restaurant, bar, butchery, gelato and bakery), The Southern Table, Li'l Mazzara's, Athens Alehouse and Cellar, and will soon have Texas Roadhouse, Five Guys, Seven Brew Drive Thru Coffee, and Nothing Bundt Cakes. I earned a small scholarship to Athens State (College at the time - now University) and found it to be a lovely campus with engaging professors. Athens State University has three colleges: Education, Arts, and Sciences and has always been an affordable option to University of Alabama Huntsville, IMO. We live approximately four miles from I-65, meaning we are just roughly 90 minutes from either Nashville, TN, or Birmingham, AL! Why no fifth star? That's reserved for larger cities with more to offer (minor league baseball, botanical garden, Space and Rocket Center, Ditto Landing Marina, etc.) like my humble hometown of Huntsville, Alabama.

Hidden in a little street alley off Bank Street is the oldest surviving cemetery in Decatur, going…read moreback to at least 1818. I have learned it is called the Rhodes Family Cemetery, after Dr. Henry Rhodes, one of the original founders of Decatur. In fact, Decatur was called Rhodes Ferry for many years until the name was changed to reflect the heroics of Stephen Decatur during the Barbary Coast War. There a lot of broken gravestones, most are illegible and contain by some records 19-20 people connected to the Rhodes family, The graves contain a high percentage of children and adolescents who died around 1818-1820. There are Rhodes, Sykes, Scruggs and Banks buried here. There's speculation that the cemetery was much larger at some point but other buildings now cover the burial places. It was heavily damaged during the Battle of Decatur as well. Besides a wrought iron gate and a sign, there's little to see.

I think that art like this gives a community its personality. It shows pride and this particular mural gives us a glimpse into Athens's past. What a different place Athens must have been two hundred years ago. What a different world. If you are in the downtown Athens area, come check this place out.
